Sheriff Gets Served a Slice of Humble Pie in Lee County!

Talk about a comeback story! After a whopping 28 years in office, Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones just got ousted by none other than Cam Hunt, the very Marine vet Jones fired last October. Why the boot? Apparently, Hunt dared to challenge the long-reigning sheriff!

The Ultimate Power Move Backfires

Hunt snagged a narrow victory, 51% to 49%, a mere 307 votes separating them from a tie. But what fueled this upset? The firing, of course! Jones gave Hunt the heave-ho after Hunt had the audacity to inform him of his intentions to run for sheriff. Jones spelled it out in the termination letter: Hunt was canned for throwing his hat in the ring.

"Safeguard of Liberty," or Obstacle?

Hunt fired back, stating, "No one should ever be threatened or silenced for exercising their rights as private citizens. The Sheriff’s Office should stand as a safeguard of liberty, not an obstacle to it." Jones, however, claimed an opponent within his office would sow discord and jeopardize public safety.

Campaign Focused on Accountability

Hunt, a 37-year-old Marine Corps captain and Auburn University grad, hammered home the firing incident, arguing it showcased Jones becoming a bit too comfortable with power. He emphasized the lack of challenges during Jones' tenure.

287(g) Program Becomes a Hot Topic

The race heated up further when a Guatemalan national, wanted for rape, shot deputies. Hunt had previously criticized Jones for not participating in the federal 287(g) program, which allows local law enforcement to collaborate with ICE. Hunt promised to enroll Lee County immediately upon taking office. Jones dismissed the criticism as a "cheap political stunt."

Dollars and Endorsements

BamaCarry and the National Association for Gun Rights PAC threw their support behind Hunt, citing Jones' opposition to constitutional carry. Hunt even out-fundraised the incumbent, raising $113,472 compared to Jones' $57,188.

The East Alabama Examiner summed it up nicely: "It’s obviously time for some more youthful and energetic leadership. I want a lawman, not a politician." Seems like the voters agreed!

Hudson's also questioning Moore's faith, claiming Alabama wants a senator who "lives out a Christian conservative life." He added, "DC money is going to do everything they can to lie and slander us. It's not going to work." He finished with a pledge to "fight way tougher fights than this" and serve the people of Alabama.

Moore Responds

Moore fired back, stating that his faith is the "foundation for everything I do." He says it "guides how I serve, how I lead, and how I treat others." He added that he and his wife "felt a call from the Lord to get into this race."

Four of Alabama's culinary titans went head-to-head this week at the Sweet Grown Alabama Seafood Cook-Off at The Wharf in Orange Beach, all vying for the chance to represent the state at the Great American Seafood Cook-Off in New Orleans this summer.

The Hound Takes Home the Gold!

Chef Robbie Nicolaisen of The Hound in Auburn, a seasoned competitor, snagged the championship title with his stunning Ember-Roasted Cobia dish! This masterpiece featured Gulf shrimp, a sweet corn puree, Chilton County peach chow chow, a crispy cornbread crumble, and a hint of anise hyssop.

What Made the Winning Dish So Special?

Nicolaisen, along with Sous Chef Gabe Atkinson, started with line-caught Gulf cobia, portioned and rubbed with their signature BBQ spice blend, then carefully roasted over hot charcoal. Fresh corn from Cassebaum Farms in Lillian was transformed into a luscious puree, subtly enhanced with miso, salt, pepper, and cream. The dish was crowned with a brown butter cornbread crumble, succulent shrimp, and that irresistible Chilton County peach chow chow!

"The wind made things tricky," Nicolaisen admitted, "but it actually worked in our favor! Cobia can get tough if cooked too quickly."

The winning team walked away with a sweet $2,500 prize, courtesy of the Organized Seafood Association of Alabama.

Judges evaluated the dishes across five key areas: presentation, overall impression, creativity, harmony of ingredients, preparation/craftsmanship, and of course, flavor! While only the winner was announced, the other talented chefs brought their A-game:

Pirates Voyage Plan Sails into Rough Seas in Orange Beach

Plans for a proposed Dolly Parton's Pirates Voyage Dinner Theater in Orange Beach have hit a snag, folks! Intense public outcry seems to have at least temporarily scuttled the project. The proposal's Planned Unit Development request was yanked from this week's Orange Beach Planning Commission agenda.

Standing Room Only Opposition

Just days before, residents packed the Orange Beach Performing Arts Center for a town hall, voicing major concerns. Traffic woes, environmental impacts, and the overall fit with Orange Beach's long-term vibe were all on the table.

Location, Location, Location!

The proposed theater was slated for a 24-acre spot on Orange Beach Boulevard, currently home to Beech Camper & Mobile Home Park. This project hinges on a reported $14 million property deal, but only if the Planned Unit Development gets the green light.
