With more and more people taking to the skies, Huntsville's own Congressman Dale Strong is stepping up to make sure our airports stay secure! He's backing a new bill to ensure the fees we pay for security actually go to security upgrades.

The SAFEGUARDS Act: What's It All About?

Congressman Strong, along with Rep. Tim Kennedy, introduced the SAFEGUARDS Act. It's a bipartisan effort to ensure the money collected from that $5.60 security fee on your plane ticket is reinvested into keeping our airports safe. Apparently, billions meant for airport security have been diverted elsewhere since 2014!

Where Would the Money Go?

The legislation proposes earmarking $500 million annually for those explosive detection systems that scan your checked bags. Another $250 million would go towards upgrading checkpoint technology to make screening faster and modernize airport security.

Why Now?

With passenger numbers soaring and major international events on the horizon, the TSA is feeling the pressure. Congressman Strong, who chairs the Homeland Security Emergency Management and Technology Subcommittee, believes this bill will give the TSA the resources it needs to tackle evolving security threats.

Local Support

Huntsville International Airport is also cheering on this legislation. Butch Roberts, CEO of the Port of Huntsville and Huntsville International Airport, says it will help ensure those passenger fees are used for what they were intended for: enhancing the safety and efficiency of air travel!

Where Does the Money Go?

Currently, we pay $5.60 on each one-way ticket for security. But, get this: Congressman Strong's office says that billions collected since 2014 have been diverted away from their intended purpose! Okay, I haven't said much about this, but staying quiet feels wrong. I was a co-broker for the Baldwin County property deal that everyone's talking about. Yep, I had a financial stake in it, and some will dismiss what I say because of that. I get it. But this goes beyond one deal.

Not About Solar vs. Not Solar

Let's be clear: I'm not pushing solar farms. Nor am I taking a side on development itself. Land use debates are important, but they're not the core issue here.

The Real Question

Here's the question we should be asking: What happens to private property rights when politicians retroactively change the rules on landowners? Especially when the opposition comes from outside voices who simply dislike the buyer or intended use?

It Could Happen To You

I own land nearby. I live in Baldwin County. I'm invested. I also help landowners conserve their land voluntarily. That last word is key. Forced conservation via political pressure is a whole different ballgame.

Buried Underneath

The real issue is getting lost in the noise: What happens when a deal is approved under the current rules, and then those rules are changed to undo it? It's not about solar panels, trust, or anything like that. It's about the message this sends to anyone considering investing in Baldwin County, or Alabama in general.

Uncertainty Spreads

When a private deal can be derailed by political moves reacting to social media, investors have to wonder: Are their plans really theirs? Or do they depend on who's in office? This uncertainty hurts the state's reputation.

Finding a Balance

Communities have legitimate concerns. Absolutely. But you don't address them by undermining hard-won property rights. Once you accept that politicians can override a landowner just because a deal has opponents, you're setting a dangerous precedent.

The Precedent Problem

Precedents don't stay put. The next one will seem just as reasonable in the moment, and just as regrettable later on.

Plain and Simple

If this retroactive seizure of private property rights can be forced on one landowner because of a few loud voices, it can happen to any of us.

That "voluntarily" part is key. Landowner-chosen conservation is one thing; conservation forced by political pressure? Entirely different.

It's about the message sent to potential investors and landowners in Baldwin County and throughout Alabama.

If a private deal can be derailed by political moves responding to social media pressure, folks will wonder if their plans are truly theirs, or just temporary favors of whoever's in office. That uncertainty spreads like wildfire.

Finding the Right Balance

Communities have real concerns that need addressing. But you don't achieve balance by gutting the property rights people fought for. Accepting that politicians can override a landowner due to vocal opposition sets a dangerous precedent.

The Slippery Slope

Precedents don't stand still. The next one will seem just as reasonable at the time, and just as awful in hindsight.

If retroactive takings of private property rights can be forced on one landowner due to a few loud voices, it can happen to us all.

That scares me. And it should scare you, too.
