Fighting for Alabama's Health: One Screening at a Time

This year's legislative session brought some awesome news: we're making cancer screenings more accessible! It reminded me that every Alabamian deserves quality healthcare.

Victory for Prostate Cancer Screening!

I'm super proud we passed SB 19 earlier this year. This law wipes out cost-sharing for prostate cancer screenings for men over 40 who are at high risk. Boom!

Alabama's now the tenth state in the nation to ditch financial roadblocks to these lifesaving screenings. It's a huge win and a sign of progress for preventative health! But, let's not stop there...

Facing Alabama's Cancer Screening Crisis

The reality is, we have a bigger issue. Alabama's facing a cancer screening crisis that goes way beyond just prostate cancer.

Did you know Alabama's in the top 10 nationally for colorectal cancer cases? The American Cancer Society estimates thousands of Alabamians could be diagnosed with colorectal cancer soon, many of whom haven't been keeping up with recommended screenings.

Just like those guys getting help with prostate cancer, all Alabamians deserve a fair shot at catching cancer early. Early detection makes treatment way more effective!

Innovation to the Rescue: The Shield Blood Test

Enter innovation! Guardant Health's Shield blood test is a game-changer. It's the first and only FDA-approved blood test for primary colorectal cancer screening (for folks 45+ at average risk). A simple blood draw could save lives!

Shield offers a quick, easy screening method, especially for Alabamians who might face barriers otherwise. No complicated procedures, less time off work, and you can even get it done during a regular doctor's visit. Rural areas, this is especially for you!

Moving Forward: Closing the Screening Gap

Great news: Shield's already covered by many major insurance plans in Alabama! Veterans can access it through the VA Community Care Network, and Medicare beneficiaries are covered too.

But, we're not done yet. To really close the screening gap, we need to implement innovation, starting with updated screening guidelines that include blood-based testing as a first-line option.

Alabama has a chance to lead the way! We've already made progress with SB 19. Now, let's make sure that progress reaches all screening methods and all Alabamians, no matter their insurance or location.

Early detection saves lives, and I'm thrilled our legislature is moving in the right direction. We need to keep pushing for expanded access to all available screening methods. Let's give everyone a fighting chance to catch cancer early and be there for their families!

State Senator Steve Livingston has represented the people of District 8 since 2014. He was elected Majority Leader of the Alabama Senate Republican Caucus in 2023.

Finebaum's Surprising Optimism for Bama

Alright, ChumCity crew, brace yourselves! Even Paul Finebaum, the SEC whisperer, seems to be seeing a glimmer of hope for Alabama this season. Yes, that Paul Finebaum.

A Manageable Schedule? Say What?!

For the past couple of years, Finebaum hasn't exactly been singing Kalen DeBoer's praises. But hold on, he's now suggesting the Tide have a secret weapon: a surprisingly "manageable schedule." On 'McElroy & Cubelic,' he pointed out some potentially tricky spots, maybe Kentucky or South Carolina lurking as potential spoilers.

Road to Knoxville? A Lucky Break!

Sure, Bama faces a brutal midseason gauntlet with Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and LSU back-to-back. However, Finebaum thinks catching Tennessee on the road this year could be a stroke of luck. He argues, "You can't get Tennessee on the road in a better year than this when that program is really going through somewhat of a transition." Sounds like a break to us!

DeBoer's Chance to Silence the Doubters

If DeBoer can indeed "navigate" this schedule – even with those rough patches – and snag a playoff spot, it could be huge for winning over the skeptics. Is DeBoer the right man for the job? Stay tuned, ChumCity, this season's gonna be a wild one!

Golden Dome's Grand Return to Huntsville!

Guess who's back, back again? The Pentagon's "Golden Dome for America" missile defense initiative is poised to steal the show at this year's Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, folks! After a bit of a disappearing act last year, it's making a triumphant return.

Who's Who in Huntsville

Get ready to rub elbows with the big guns! General Michael Guetlein, the DoD's point-person for Golden Dome, will be there, along with other key players. This is a HUGE change from last year when the Golden Dome panel mysteriously vanished from the agenda.

From Concept to Reality

Remember those hush-hush discussions at that separate Missile Defense Agency summit? Well, times have changed! Defense leaders are now openly chatting about Golden Dome, especially after it took center stage at the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs. We're talking about moving from brainstorming to actually building!

Contracts, Milestones, and Missile Mayhem

Guetlein has been dropping hints that Golden Dome is charging ahead, with contracts being signed and milestones crushed. This isn't just about one missile type, either; it's a layered defense ready to tackle ballistic, hypersonic, AND cruise missile threats. Talk about comprehensive!

Star-Studded Speaker Lineup

But wait, there's more! Gen. Stephen Whiting from U.S. Space Command and Lt. Gen. Heath Collins from the Missile Defense Agency will also be gracing us with their presence. And let's not forget Lt. Gen. John Rafferty, who might just reveal how Huntsville is becoming the operational heart of the Golden Dome system.

Huntsville: Missile Defense Mecca

The Space and Missile Defense Symposium is where it's at for the missile defense and space crowd. Expect military leaders, defense contractors, and policymakers galore, all shaping the future of national security. So, mark your calendars and get ready for some serious space and missile talk!

Coaches Push for Playoff Expansion!

College football coaches are throwing their weight behind expanding the College Football Playoff! The American Football Coaches Association voted last week, recommending a playoff system with the "maximum number of participants." Sounds like more football to us, Chumsters!

Say Goodbye to Conference Championships?

Hold on to your hats! This proposal might also ditch conference title games. The only exception is the hallowed Army-Navy game, keeping its special day. Other games could be played on the same day so the CFP would wrap by mid-January.

Who's On Board?

Big names like Bret Bielema (Illinois), Brent Venables (Oklahoma), Clark Lea (Vanderbilt), Rhett Lashlee (SMU), Joey McGuire (Texas Tech), and Pat Fitzgerald (Michigan State) are part of the association backing the expansion.

What's Next?

Of course, there are still hurdles to jump, like scheduling, TV deals, and all that lovely bureaucratic red tape. But with coaches pushing hard, it feels like further expansion is coming.

Follow the Money!

In the wild world of college sports, cash is king. More playoff games mean more money for those who profit the most. Shocking, right?

Keep your eyes peeled, Chumsters, because it looks like playoff expansion is more likely than not!

Alabama Business Coalition: Keeping Alabama Competitive

The Alabama Business Coalition (ABC) is gearing up for its next gathering on Wednesday, May 13th, bringing together the state's sharpest minds – business leaders, policy wonks, and key players – to talk shop about Alabama's economic future.

What's the ABC all About?

Think of the ABC as a supergroup of Washington-savvy government affairs pros representing companies deeply rooted in Alabama. They're a non-profit powerhouse dedicated to boosting Alabama's long-term interests, plain and simple.

Mission: Alabama Growth!

Their mission? To fuel Alabama's economic engine by sparking conversations that benefit businesses, residents, and communities across the state. They're constantly meeting with members of Congress, senior staffers, and state leaders, making them a go-to hub for collaboration between Alabama's private sector and public leadership.

Relationships are Key

"The Alabama Business Coalition is all about relationships - connecting the right people to make real progress for businesses across our state. It's a privilege to be a part of it," says Mary Pat Lawrence, Board Member of the ABC and Senior Vice President of Government Relations at Protective Life.

Who's Leading the Charge?

The ABC is steered by a board of rockstars from major Alabama-connected companies: Bill Bailey (Radiance Technologies), Austin Bone (Vulcan Materials Company), Mary Pat Lawrence (Protective Life Insurance Company), Watson Donald (Alabama Power Company), and Gina Rigby (AFLAC), as Board Advisor. Their leadership reflects the coalition's extensive reach across industries vital to Alabama's ongoing success.

A Powerful Voice from Washington

The May meeting features U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, one of Alabama's most influential voices in D.C. He's a champion for Alabama's priorities, bringing clout to issues that matter most to the state.

Real Talk, Real Results

ABC meetings are designed for face-to-face conversations, letting members and invited officials dive deep into fast-moving federal and economic issues. This model fosters lively discussions and strong relationships that benefit Alabama employers, workers, and communities.

Strengthening Alabama's Voice

Watson Donald, president of the ABC and Director of Corporate Stakeholder Strategy at Alabama Power, notes, "The strength of the ABC is the direct access – Alabama employers engaging directly with our congressional delegation about critical issues. These relationships boost Alabama’s voice in Washington."

The Alabama Business Coalition's upcoming event on May 13th highlights how coordinated leadership and strategic engagement keep Alabama competitive and ready for growth.

Alabama Weather Update: Storms Incoming!

Good morning, ChumCity folks! We've got some weather brewing, so let's get straight to it. Rain's currently hanging out up in North Alabama, near the Tennessee border, but the rest of us are dry for now. Heads up, though! Those showers and storms are planning a southward invasion this afternoon and tonight.

Severe Weather Risk

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) is keeping a close eye on things. Parts of Central and Southwest Alabama are under an "enhanced risk" (level 3/5) for severe weather. That includes Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and a bunch of other cities. Most of the northern two-thirds of the state is at a level 2/5 risk, while even Mobile and Dothan are seeing a level 1/5 risk.

What to Expect

  • Timing: Severe storms could pop off as early as 10 p.m. in the northern and western counties.
  • Tornadoes: The biggest tornado threat is in that "enhanced risk" zone across central and southwest Alabama this afternoon and tonight.
  • Hail & Winds: Expect storms packing hail and potentially damaging straight-line winds.
  • Flash Flooding: These storms are rain-making machines, so watch out for possible flash flooding.

Safety First!

Make sure you're ready to receive weather warnings! If you're in a mobile home, locate your nearest shelter and have a plan for getting there.

The storm action should ease up after midnight as things move south, but a slight severe threat might linger into the early morning hours.

Friday & The Weekend

Friday looks mostly dry across Alabama, except for a few coastal showers. But a wave of low pressure is lurking in the northern Gulf, so rain could return to the southern half of the state Friday night and into Saturday. North Alabama should stay dry Saturday, though skies will be mostly cloudy. Sunday? Expect a wet, unsettled day with showers and storms.

Looking Ahead

Next week is shaping up to be mostly rain-free!

Flashback Friday

On this day in 1967, an EF-2 tornado ripped through western Birmingham, causing significant damage and sadly, one fatality.

Check back for the next video update around 30 this afternoon. Have a great day, everyone!

Rural Alabama Hospitals Get a Boost!

Big news for our friends in rural Alabama! Thanks to some savvy maneuvering in Congress, nearly 30 rural hospitals are eligible for federal grants, estimated around $150,000 each.

Aderholt's Helping Hand

U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) used his influence as Appropriations chairman to champion this much-needed funding. He played a key role in securing the Rural Hospital Provider Assistance Program within the Fiscal Year 2026 Consolidated Appropriations Act.

More Resources for Essential Services

"Securing the Rural Hospital Provider Assistance Program was a win!" Aderholt declared. "This shows our commitment to ensuring rural hospitals have the resources they need to thrive and serve their communities. This direct financial assistance will help these facilities maintain and strengthen their essential healthcare services."

Fighting to Keep Doors Open

The Department of Health and Human Services and the Health Resources and Services Administration will manage the program, sending direct aid to eligible hospitals battling to stay afloat.

Local Impact

Five hospitals in Aderholt’s Fourth Congressional District – Fayette, Lakeland, Marion Regional, Northwest, and Russellville – are among those eligible. The final grant amounts will depend on the number of applications received nationwide. Be sure to apply before the July 1, 2026 deadline!

More Healthcare Dollars Coming

This funding adds to a growing stream of federal healthcare dollars flowing into Alabama. Remember Governor Ivey’s Rural Health Transformation Advisory Group, which was born after the state was awarded a whopping $203.4 million in initial funding for the Alabama Rural Health Transformation Program? Great things are happening!

Marques Surges Ahead in First District Race!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity! The race for Alabama's First Congressional District is heating up, and it looks like State Rep. Rhett Marques is pulling away from the pack! According to a recent poll, Marques has opened up a solid six-point lead over former U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl.

Carl's Comeback Stalling?

It seems Carl's efforts to regain his seat aren't quite hitting the mark. The latest PI Polling survey shows Marques at 27% and Carl trailing at 21% among likely Republican primary voters. Joshua McKee lags behind at just 4%.

Marques on the Rise

Here's the real kicker: Marques is on a roll! His numbers have steadily increased over the past month, while Carl's have remained stagnant. It looks like Marques is building momentum, while Carl might be stuck in neutral.

Undecided Voters Hold the Key

With a whopping 45% of likely Republican primary voters still undecided, this race is far from over. The next two weeks will be crucial as candidates battle to win over those all-important votes.

Mobile Advantage for Carl? Not So Fast!

While Carl enjoys support in his home county of Mobile, that advantage disappears elsewhere in the district. Marques is leading in Baldwin County, dominating in the Dothan media market, and crushing Carl in the rural areas.

Marques Wins Over Voters

Marques is also winning over voters across the ideological spectrum, leading among very conservative, somewhat conservative, and even moderate voters. His favorability is up, and there's still plenty of room for him to grow as the primary approaches.

Runoff on the Horizon?

Alabama requires a candidate to win a majority to avoid a runoff. With so many undecided voters, a runoff election is still a strong possibility. Stay tuned, ChumCity, because this race is going to be a nail-biter!

About the Poll

The poll was conducted from May 2nd to May 4th by PI Polling for Alabama Daily News. It included 531 likely Republican primary voters and has a margin of error of ±4.3%.
