Local House Race Gets a Big Endorsement!

The race for Alabama's House District 48 just got a whole lot more interesting! Beth Holloway, mother of Natalee Holloway, has officially thrown her support behind Republican candidate Lloyd Peeples.

Peeples: A Familiar Face

Peeples, a former federal prosecutor, is taking on longtime State Rep. Jim Carns in the Republican primary. District 48 covers areas in both Jefferson and Shelby counties, so this race is one to watch.

Holloway Connection

Here's where things get really compelling: Peeples was Senior Trial Counsel for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Birmingham. He prosecuted Joran van der Sloot on federal charges connected to the tragic disappearance and death of Natalee Holloway.

Beth Holloway Speaks Out

"I know Lloyd will fight for you the way he fought for me," Beth Holloway said in a statement. Powerful words!

Peeples on the Case

Peeples says the Holloway case deeply impacted him. "Everyone knows that what Beth Holloway and her family endured is every parent’s worst nightmare...I was honored to be part of bringing some measure of justice to the Holloway story."

Fighting for the Little Guy?

Peeples is pitching his campaign as a fight against "business-as-usual politics." He wants to represent residents who feel ignored by the powers that be.

A Voice in Montgomery

"I'm running to be a voice for our community and make sure that voice is heard in Montgomery," Peeples stated. The primary election is set for May 19th. Get ready to vote, ChumCity!

Alabama AG Fights for Fair Senate Maps

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall isn't backing down! He's urging the Eleventh Circuit to ditch those injunctions blocking Alabama's 2021 State Senate map.

What's at Stake?

If Marshall wins, State Sen. Will Barfoot's Montgomery-area district will be safe from a federal special master's redraw. Big news for Pike Road!

Supreme Court Shakes Things Up

According to Marshall, the recent Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais changed everything. He argues the lower court's orders can't stand up to the new standards. No court has yet found Alabama's map to fail these new standards, either.

"Let the People Decide!"

"Alabama's elections should be decided by maps drawn by the people's representatives," Marshall declared. "We are asking the court to act before Alabama voters are forced to cast ballots under a map the law cannot support.”

A Controversial Redraw

A federal judge last fall sided with plaintiffs like the NAACP, ordering a race-based redraw of Barfoot's Republican-leaning District 25. This would create a reshaped District 26 (currently held by State Sen. Kirk Hatcher), a district that voted heavily for Kamala Harris.

Barfoot's Bold Move

Despite the redistricting drama, State Senator Will Barfoot is running in District 26 to keep Elmore County in Republican hands.

Turning the Tables

Marshall's brief cleverly used Justice Kavanaugh's words, arguing that it's wrong for a federal court to "swoop in and re-do a State's election laws" so close to an election.

NAACP's Argument Fails

The same NAACP lawyers recently lost a similar argument in Callais. Their proposed map also has issues: splitting Prattville, ignoring community ties, and neglecting to protect incumbents.

Time is Ticking!

Marshall wants a ruling ASAP, before the May 19 primary.

What's Next?

Lawmakers are wrapping up the special redistricting session, sending SB1 and HB1 to Governor Ivey for approval. Stay tuned!

Alabama Roads Get a $7.6 Million Boost!

Governor Kay Ivey just dropped some serious good news for Alabama's roads! Over $7.6 million in state funding is heading to 26 different road projects across the state, thanks to the Rebuild Alabama Annual Grant Program.

Rebuild Alabama: Hitting the Road Running

This is just the first wave of funding for the year from the Alabama Department of Transportation's Annual Grant Program, all powered by the Rebuild Alabama Act of 2019.

Gov. Ivey: "Delivering Results You Can See!"

"Spot a blue Rebuild Alabama sign? You're seeing progress!" exclaimed Governor Ivey. "These grants are empowering local communities to tackle essential projects. We're committed to delivering results that are visible mile after mile!"

More Grants on the Horizon!

Get this: the 2026 Annual Grant Program is dishing out a total of $15 million this year—that's $5 million MORE than the law requires! More grants are expected to be announced later this year.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Local governments chipped in over $1.9 million in matching funds, proving it's a team effort! All projects awarded must get rolling within the year.

Rebuild Alabama: A Proven Track Record

Since the Rebuild Alabama Act took effect, over $78 million has been invested in local infrastructure projects statewide. That's a whole lot of road work!

Alabama Political Drama: PAC Retracts Ad Against Mo Brooks!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCityizens, because Alabama politics just got a whole lot messier! Progress PAC, the Business Council of Alabama's political arm, has publicly walked back a radio ad slamming Mo Brooks. The original ad accused Brooks of insider trading, a claim the long-time politician vehemently denied, even threatening legal action.

The Backtrack Heard 'Round the State

So, what changed? The PAC's retraction essentially admits Brooks "doesn't personally trade stocks or share inside information with those who do it for him." Ouch.

Brooks vs. Lomax: The Race Heats Up

Brooks, a familiar face in Alabama politics for over 40 years, is currently battling it out for a House seat against fresh-faced incumbent State Rep. James Lomax (R-Huntsville). Is this retracted ad a sign of things to come in this heated race?

The Underlying Story: Pfizer Stock and Delayed Filings

While the PAC took back that specific accusation, the story doesn't end there. Remember that Business Insider investigation from 2021? It revealed that Brooks' family inherited Pfizer stock, bought more during the COVID-19 pandemic, and then sold it all for a tidy profit.

Conflict of Interest?

Adding fuel to the fire, Brooks publicly criticized Pfizer around the same time. His wife, Martha, claims she handles the family's investments and that Mo was clueless about the Pfizer stock.

STOCK Act Violation?

But wait, there's more! The sale wasn't disclosed until after the 30-day deadline mandated by the STOCK Act, a federal law designed to prevent insider trading. Oops!

Brooks Fires Back

Brooks, appearing on the "Dale Jackson Show," downplayed the situation, saying it was just a "tardy filing" by his wife during a stressful time. He accused Progress PAC of "deceiving" people.

Dirty Politics?

"These special interests engage in dirty politics," Brooks stated, lamenting the impact this has had on him and his wife and suggesting that such "dishonesty" deters good people from running for office.

What do you think, ChumCity? Is this just political mudslinging, or is there something more to this story?

Alabama Political Shenanigans: Your ChumCity Roundup!

  1. Legislature Laughs in the Face of Outrage: Despite the media and Dems throwing their best insults (white supremacy accusations and impotent rage, oh my!), the Alabama Legislature is steamrolling ahead. They're set to use the "Livingston map" for a special election. Will their antics actually rile anyone up? Tune in to find out!

  2. Aderholt's Big Gamble: Congressman Robert Aderholt thinks Alabama's redistricting could be the GOP's golden ticket to snagging the House majority in November. More conservative districts? Sounds like a recipe for red dominance!

  3. Tennessee's "Gerrymandered" Map Meltdown: Tennessee Republicans dropped a new congressional map, and Democrats lost it. We're talking Capitol protests channeling January 6th vibes, threats of secession, desk-standing sign-wielding ("No Jim Crow 2.0," apparently), and even a Confederate flag bonfire. Talk about a dramatic Tuesday!

  4. Iran Tensions & a Possible Peace Pipe?: The U.S. and Iran are back at it, with strikes flying on ships and ports. But hold on – Pakistan's playing peacemaker, floating a nuclear moratorium. Is a broader deal in the works? Don't hold your breath.

  5. Trump's Senate Endorsement SNAFU: President Trump hopped on social media to support Barry Moore for Senate... or did he? He accidentally endorsed him for a House reelection at first, before scrambling to clarify. Even the former Prez gets confused sometimes, folks!

  6. Robertson Attacks Reed on Crime: Attorney General hopeful Katherine Robertson is hitting Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed hard, blasting his record on crime. She's promising to be tougher, playing on those public safety worries. Will it work?

  7. Brooks Gets Slapped (Sort Of): Remember that Business Council of Alabama PAC ad accusing Mo Brooks of "insider stock trading?" They had to retract it on air. But, the real zinger? He still allegedly violated the STOCK Act by not reporting those Pfizer trades during the pandemic. Ouch!

Alabama House Erupts in Redistricting Protest!

Things got heated in the Alabama House this Friday morning as a redistricting protest broke out in the gallery! During a debate on the Senate's redistricting bill, SB1, chanting and singing filled the chamber, bringing things to a standstill.

"Stand Up, Fight Back!"

The atmosphere became electric as protesters made their voices heard. Security and state troopers moved to remove a woman from the gallery while the crowd passionately chanted "stand up, fight back!" It was a tense situation, to say the least.

Democratic Lawmakers Step In

Adding to the drama, two Democratic lawmakers, State Reps. Juandalynn Givan and Mary Moore, reportedly intervened during the woman's removal, confronting law enforcement.

What's This All About?

This all went down as the House debated SB1, covering state Senate Districts 25 and 26. Remember that the U.S. Supreme Court recently struck down race-based redistricting. These bills are contingency plans, only kicking into action if federal courts give the go-ahead for Alabama to ditch its current maps.

House in Recess

The House recessed amid the commotion. Details are still emerging about whether the woman was arrested or charged. Stay tuned to ChumCity for more updates on this developing story!

Gridiron Shockwave in Mobile!

Word on the street (and the sidelines!) is that Mary G. Montgomery High School head football coach Zach Golson has been placed on administrative leave. This is a real stunner, considering the monumental success he's brought to the Vikings.

What's the Buzz?

Apparently, a signing ceremony is at the heart of the issue. Sources say it involved eighth-graders signing letters of intent to play ball at MGM.

Zoning Concerns?

The big question being asked is whether all these young talents are actually zoned for MGM. Mobile County Public Schools is keeping tight-lipped for now, and Coach Golson is also staying mum.

Golson's Impressive Record

Let's not forget Golson's stellar run! A 37-10 record over four seasons, playoff appearances every year, and a semifinal appearance in 2023. He's even snagged Class 7A Coach of the Year honors twice! Talk about a turnaround after that tough 0-10 season in 2021.

Stay Tuned, ChumCity Crew!

This story is developing, and you know we'll keep you in the loop as we get more info. Will Golson be back on the sidelines? Only time will tell.
