Hold on to your hats, ChumCity citizens! The Alabama redistricting drama just took a wild turn. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has thrown its weight behind Alabama in its Supreme Court battle, urging the justices to block a lower court ruling on the state's congressional map.

What's the Fuss?

Basically, a district court slapped Alabama with an injunction, saying their map didn't create enough "Black opportunity districts." But the DOJ? They're saying that ruling goes against a recent Supreme Court decision, Louisiana v. Callais.

DOJ's Three-Point Play

The DOJ's brief lays out three key arguments:

1. The District Court Ignored Callais: The DOJ argues the lower court didn't properly consider the "good faith" of the Alabama legislature and didn't separate race from partisan politics. Alabama wanted a 6-1 Republican congressional delegation, and the DOJ suggests the lower court wrongfully equated pursuing that goal with racial discrimination.

2. The Voting Rights Act Ruling Doesn't Fly: According to the DOJ, plaintiffs didn't offer an alternative map that met Alabama's legitimate goals, like preserving the Gulf Coast community of interest.

3. The "Purcell Principle" Was Violated: Federal courts shouldn't change election rules at the last minute! The district court's injunction came just before the candidate list deadline, causing chaos.

Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

The DOJ even points out that if Alabama had drawn the second Black opportunity district the lower court demanded, they might've been accused of racial gerrymandering under Callais. Talk about a Catch-22!

Alabama's Redistricting Drama: A Rocky Road Ahead?

Alabama's been locked in a long-running battle over its congressional map, and a recent court ruling has thrown another wrench into the works. A three-judge panel slammed the brakes on the state's 6-1 Republican-leaning map, calling foul on what they see as intentional race-based discrimination.

The Court's Stance

The judges made it crystal clear: they don't want Alabamians voting under a map they believe is tainted by racial bias, especially after the Callais decision. Ouch!

Expert Weighs In

But what does this all mean for the future? Hans von Spakovsky, a legal eagle with Advancing American Freedom, hopped on WVNN's "The Yaffee Program" to give his take. And guess what? He doesn't think the Supreme Court is gonna ride to Alabama's rescue.

Stuck with the Current Map?

Spakovsky's basically saying that even if Alabama appeals, they're likely stuck with the court-imposed plan for 2024, which keeps those two Democratic seats firmly in place. Alabama's Attorney General Steve Marshall is fighting back, filing emergency applications with the Supremes, but Spakovsky isn't convinced it'll be enough.

The Heart of the Matter

Spakovsky believes that many are misinterpreting the Supreme Court's previous decision. He explains that race cannot be the primary factor in drawing district lines without first proving a violation of the Voting Rights Act, specifically intentional racial discrimination. While race can be used to remedy such discrimination, the judges believe the evidence presented met that standard.

A Realistic Outlook

Although he disagrees with the injunction, Spakovsky admits the judges went to great lengths to revisit the evidence and uphold their initial ruling. He thinks the Supreme Court won't overturn these detailed findings. "I'm just being realistic here," he stated, suggesting Alabama's appeal faces an uphill battle.

The battle for Alabama's U.S. Senate seat is raging on! U.S. Rep. Barry Moore and ex-Navy SEAL Jared Hudson are hitting the campaign trail hard, vying for your vote.

Runoff Rumble in Pelham

The two Senate hopefuls faced off at the Shelby County Runoff Candidate Forum in Pelham, Alabama, this past Tuesday. Moore, who snagged the top spot in last week's primary with a solid 39.18%, is squaring off against Hudson, who grabbed the second runoff spot with 25.63%.

Moore's Liberty Score & Hudson's Combat Record

Moore touted his impressive "Liberty score," boasting a 96 and emphasizing his commitment to protecting individual freedoms. "Why on earth would we elect people who will go to Washington, D.C. and voluntarily give away your freedom?" he declared.

Hudson, while admitting his lack of congressional experience, countered with his real-world experience. "I appreciate that Congressman Moore has a great Liberty Score," Hudson said, "but I can tell you that I’ve scored 21-0 against the Taliban over 60 combat operations." Boom!

Border Security a Key Issue

Illegal immigration emerged as a major point of discussion. Moore highlighted his "Americans First Immigration Act," aimed at codifying Trump-era policies. He slammed Biden's border policies, quipping that it was "basically a Disney Fast Pass."

Hudson, on the other hand, pledged to put Alabama first, not D.C. "When you move to DC, you become DC, but my wife, my three beautiful little girls will stay right here in Alabama," he stated.

Dothan School Employee Faces Sex Crime Allegations

A former Dothan City Schools employee is in deep trouble, folks! Johnny Mark Dunaway, 55, is cooling his heels in the Houston County Jail, awaiting a bond hearing after being slapped with nine felony charges. We're talking serious accusations: enticing a minor, child sexual abuse, and even interfering with custody.

What's He Accused Of?

The Dothan Police Department says Dunaway, who was a math coach at Jerry Lee Faine Elementary and other schools, is accused of some pretty disturbing stuff.

Timeline Raises Questions

Here's where it gets dicey. Cops say the Houston County Department of Human Resources tipped them off on May 6 about alleged inappropriate behavior between a school employee and a student. But get this: Dothan City Schools apparently got a complaint way back in February, alleging similar conduct, and handled it internally! Another complaint surfaced on April 28, yet DHR wasn't notified until May 6. That's a week after the second allegation.

Investigation Underway

Police launched a "methodical, thorough investigation" and even conducted a forensic interview with a student who spilled the beans on alleged sexual crimes. A search warrant at Dunaway's Dale County pad turned up items now undergoing forensic examination.

Troubling Past

Adding fuel to the fire, reports have surfaced about Dunaway's past behavior. Thirty years ago, while teaching in Palm Beach County, Florida, he was accused of getting "inappropriately familiar" with students, giving gifts, and even rubbing their backs and legs, according to the Florida Education Practices Commission. He got a slap on the wrist, was put on probation, and his Florida teaching certificate expired in '99. Despite this, he later taught in Georgia and then landed in Dothan. Former Dothan City Schools bigwigs claim his background check came back clean.
