Dothan School Employee Faces Sex Crime Allegations

A former Dothan City Schools employee is in deep trouble, folks! Johnny Mark Dunaway, 55, is cooling his heels in the Houston County Jail, awaiting a bond hearing after being slapped with nine felony charges. We're talking serious accusations: enticing a minor, child sexual abuse, and even interfering with custody.

What's He Accused Of?

The Dothan Police Department says Dunaway, who was a math coach at Jerry Lee Faine Elementary and other schools, is accused of some pretty disturbing stuff.

Timeline Raises Questions

Here's where it gets dicey. Cops say the Houston County Department of Human Resources tipped them off on May 6 about alleged inappropriate behavior between a school employee and a student. But get this: Dothan City Schools apparently got a complaint way back in February, alleging similar conduct, and handled it internally! Another complaint surfaced on April 28, yet DHR wasn't notified until May 6. That's a week after the second allegation.

Investigation Underway

Police launched a "methodical, thorough investigation" and even conducted a forensic interview with a student who spilled the beans on alleged sexual crimes. A search warrant at Dunaway's Dale County pad turned up items now undergoing forensic examination.

Troubling Past

Adding fuel to the fire, reports have surfaced about Dunaway's past behavior. Thirty years ago, while teaching in Palm Beach County, Florida, he was accused of getting "inappropriately familiar" with students, giving gifts, and even rubbing their backs and legs, according to the Florida Education Practices Commission. He got a slap on the wrist, was put on probation, and his Florida teaching certificate expired in '99. Despite this, he later taught in Georgia and then landed in Dothan. Former Dothan City Schools bigwigs claim his background check came back clean.

More to Come?

Dothan police aren't ruling out additional charges, and the investigation is still ongoing. Stay tuned, ChumCity, because this story is far from over!

What Does It Mean To Be American?

Every country has borders and laws, sure, but the truly strong nations? They've got something deeper: shared values. They know what they stand for and aren't afraid to shout it from the rooftops!

As America gears up for its 250th birthday bash, it's time to ask a crucial question: What does it mean to be an American? If we can't nail down that answer, Houston, we've got a problem.

The Slow Fade

Nations don't usually implode in fiery explosions. Nope, it's a slow, subtle erosion. They weaken over time, not from outside invaders, but from within. They lose the habits, beliefs, and loyalties that once glued them together. When a country can't explain what unites its people, those bonds start to snap.

The Good Ol' Days

For a long time, being American was crystal clear. It wasn't about where your ancestors came from, what you looked like, or your religious beliefs. It was about sticking to principles: the rule of law, individual liberty, personal responsibility, and equality under the Constitution. These principles weren't just labels, they built this country. They drew people from every corner of the globe and turned them into Americans.

Assimilation: Not a Dirty Word!

That process? It's called assimilation.

Now, the word "assimilation" sometimes gets a bad rap, falsely labeled as "racist." But it's got nothing to do with race. It's all about embracing values!

Assimilation isn't about ditching your heritage or faith. It's about adopting a new, shared belief system. It asks newcomers to embrace not just America's freedoms, but also its responsibilities: respect for the law, commitment to our government, and playing your part in keeping our free society ticking.

The National Bargain

That's the basic deal of being part of this nation. And it's even more important when we're facing constant immigration.

Immigration can make America stronger – it's happened before! But only when borders are secure, entry is governed by law, and newcomers are expected to assimilate. Without those conditions, the whole game changes.

Unity or Bust

No country can stay united if a bunch of people arrive without any intention of assimilating. They've got to have some obligation to the country that's welcoming them, a commitment to being a part of it. Otherwise, immigration isn't a positive thing anymore. It can start to eat away at a nation's identity.

Then, the United States might as well just be a bank: a place to chase personal gain, collect public benefits, and make demands without any responsibility for the future.

That's how citizenship gets watered down. That's how solidarity fades away. That's how Americans start to feel like their interests are second-rate in their own country.

Ideas, Not Blood

America's foundation isn't shared blood, it's shared ideas. That's what's always made it special. We welcome people from everywhere, no matter their race, religion, or background. But in return, we ask something: become part of our common civic culture. Respect the law, support our government, and embrace the duties that come with being a citizen. In a country as diverse as ours, that shared civic identity is what makes unity possible.

The Alternative?

The alternative is a country that asks nothing in return. "Come here, live here, that's enough." National identity becomes just a matter of geography. Any attempt to teach civic responsibility or love of country is called outdated or, yikes, "racist" by the media.

But no nation can stick together on those terms. If belonging doesn't mean anything, then belonging itself starts to lose its meaning.

The Big Question

The question is whether, despite our differences, we'll keep sharing a common civic identity. And whether that identity still comes with expectations.

This isn't about excluding anyone. It's about defining who we are as a nation. A country that can't define itself can't survive.

For too long, we've only talked about rights, protections, and benefits, while ignoring duty, loyalty, and shared obligation. But a free country can't survive on entitlements alone.

It needs citizens who understand that American life isn't just something to receive. It's something to uphold.

If America wants to stay true to what it's always claimed to be – not just a place, but an idea – we've got to be clear about the answer to a simple question:

What does it mean to be an American? And we've got to stand by that answer. Because when a nation loses the guts to define itself, it's practically begging others to redefine it beyond recognition.

Senator Tuberville Honors Alabama's Fallen Heroes

As Memorial Day approached, Senator Tommy Tuberville took to the Senate floor to remember two Alabama service members whose sacrifices continue to resonate.

Remembering Major Klinner and Staff Sergeant Hall

Tuberville paid tribute to U.S. Air Force Major Alex Klinner of Auburn and U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jeffrey Hall of Huntsville, honoring their dedication and the families they left behind.

The Price of Freedom

"Even the most debated issues in this building pale in comparison to the American soldiers who have sacrificed their lives to give us the freedoms to debate and disagree," Tuberville stated.

A Nation's Gratitude

As America gears up for its 250th birthday, Tuberville emphasized the importance of Memorial Day. "It's a day to honor these fallen heroes and reflect on their sacrifice," he urged, reminding everyone that it's more than just a long weekend.

Major Klinner: A Life of Service and Family

Tuberville highlighted Major Klinner, who tragically died in a refueling mission. A 2016 Auburn University graduate, Klinner served with distinction. He was remembered not only for his pilot skills, but as a loving husband to Libby and father to three young children. His legacy of faith, family, and freedom will live on.

Staff Sergeant Hall: A Hometown Hero

The senator also honored Staff Sergeant Hall, whose mother, Annette, founded an American Gold Star Mothers chapter after his death. This organization supports families across North Alabama. Tuberville praised Annette and her husband Charles for raising a patriotic son and continuing his legacy.

A Call to Remember

Tuberville concluded by urging everyone to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day. "They were fathers, sons, husbands, brothers, and friends—but to us, they’re American heroes," he said. "We owe them our full gratitude."

Get Outdoors, Heroes! Alabama Salutes Our Military!

Hey ChumCity friends! As Memorial Day fades and summer heats up, Governor Kay Ivey wants to remind our incredible veterans and active-duty military members about a fantastic perk: Alabama's State Parks system is ready to roll out the red carpet!

Parks for Patriots: Your Ticket to Adventure!

The Parks for Patriots program offers FREE admission to day-use areas at participating Alabama State Parks for veterans and active-duty folks. Plus, snag a sweet 15% discount on lodging, cabins, and campgrounds throughout the state park system. Sweet deal!

Governor Ivey's Message

"Supporting our veterans and active military has ALWAYS been a priority for me," says Governor Ivey. "Their sacrifice protects our freedom. So, get out there, enjoy Alabama's gorgeous outdoors, and know we're eternally grateful!"

A Tradition of Appreciation

Since 2017, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) has been offering free admission through Parks for Patriots. It’s all about saying "thanks" for your service!

Commissioner Blankenship's Take

ADCNR Commissioner Chris Blankenship emphasizes that Alabama's parks are spaces for both recreation AND reflection for military families. "These parks stand as a tribute to those who've served," he says. "Free admission is just one way we can show our gratitude."

History Runs Deep

Did you know many of the cabins and pavilions we enjoy today were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression? Many of those hardworking builders were WWI veterans themselves!

More Perks for Our Heroes!

Beyond Parks for Patriots, Alabama also provides discounted hunting and fishing licenses for disabled veterans, special waterfowl hunting days, license exemptions for active-duty residents on leave, and resident-rate licenses for non-resident service members stationed here. Alabama's got your back!

Boom Times for Alabama's Missile Defense!

Get ready for some serious firepower, folks! Lockheed Martin just broke ground on a massive new facility in Troy, Alabama, set to supercharge the production of key missile defense systems. Think THAAD interceptors - the good stuff that keeps us safe!

Doubling Down on Defense

This isn't just a small upgrade; we're talking about an 87,000-square-foot Munitions Production Center. This "Building 47" as they call it, will almost double the existing production space at the Pike County site. More space means more missiles, and more support for the Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) program.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!

This expansion isn't just about hardware; it's about people too! Expect to see more jobs popping up over the next three years. Considering Lockheed Martin already employs nearly 4,000 Alabamans, that's a big deal for the local economy.

Why Now?

With global security concerns on the rise, the demand for missile defense is skyrocketing. Lockheed Martin is stepping up to the plate, investing BIG – over $9 billion by 2030! – to expand munitions manufacturing across the country.

THAAD to the Rescue!

THAAD, or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, is designed to intercept ballistic missiles, whether they're inside or outside the atmosphere. The U.S., Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates are already relying on this system.

Quadrupling Production

Remember that announcement from January? Lockheed Martin is planning to QUADRUPLE THAAD interceptor production, jumping from 96 to a whopping 400 units annually within seven years. Talk about ramping things up!

A Critical Partnership

Even the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Michael Duffey, is singing Lockheed Martin's praises, calling the partnership "critical to surging our munitions capacity."

More Than Just Missiles

Lockheed Martin isn't just building missiles; they're investing in the community. In 2023 alone, they awarded over $640,000 in grants to 18 non-profits across Alabama and put nearly $200,000 into the STEM Academy Lab at Pike County Schools.

Alabama: Missile Central

Lockheed Martin's Pike County facility has been a Troy fixture since 1994, cranking out THAAD, Javelin, HELLFIRE, JASSM, and LRASM missiles. It sounds like Alabama is becoming a real force in defense!

Montgomery Man Found Guilty in Armed Crime Spree!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity! A Montgomery man is facing some serious time after being convicted on robbery and firearm charges related to a four-day crime spree back in 2025.

Rayshon Frances Demonta Hall, 24, was found guilty by a federal jury on multiple counts of robbery and brandishing a firearm. This guy terrorized local businesses, folks!

The Crime Spree Deets

According to court documents, Hall and his partner-in-crime, Najari Denarka Mitchell, went on a robbery rampage across Montgomery. It all started on August 1, 2025, when they allegedly robbed a fast-food joint on Troy Highway. The next day, an auto parts store on Fairview Avenue was hit, followed by a gas station on Troy Highway on August 4. Yikes!

Facing the Music

Hall is now staring down a sentence that could range from 21 years to LIFE in federal prison. And get this – there's no parole. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for the coming months.

Acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson emphasized the danger and fear these armed robberies caused. "Those who choose to terrorize businesses with violence and firearms will be held accountable," Davidson stated.

His Partner's Fate

Mitchell, 21, previously pleaded guilty for his role in the robberies with Hall. Federal prosecutors revealed Mitchell admitted to even more armed robberies before teaming up with Hall. He's looking at a hefty prison sentence too.

This case was a joint effort between the FBI, the Montgomery Police Department, and the U.S. Marshals Service. Good job, team, for bringing these criminals to justice!

AI Scams: They're Here and Getting Scary!

Artificial intelligence is changing everything, but it's also giving scammers some serious Hollywood-level tools. We're talking deepfakes, folks – videos, voices, even entire fake personas that look and sound REAL. They're using these to impersonate everyone from CEOs to your own family. Yikes!

The Deepfake Fraud Explosion

These scams are blowing up, and they're costing us big time. Experts reckon deepfake fraud is already costing Americans billions, and it could hit $40 billion by 2027! That's a LOT of lost chum change.

Spotting the Fakes

“Scammers create fake personas and can even impersonate people you know,” says fraud expert Jeff Taylor. The good news? Learning to spot the signs can keep you safe. Even the best deepfakes have weaknesses.

Red Flags Galore!

Scammers rely on speed and emotion. Watch for these warning signs:

  • Pressure and Secrecy: "Act NOW!" Legitimate orgs rarely demand immediate action without verification. Also, watch if they try to get you on encrypted messaging apps.
  • Weird Audio/Video: Real speech has rhythm. Deepfakes can sound monotone or have awkward pauses. Visually, look for mismatched lips, unnatural blinking, or funky lighting.
  • Out-of-Context Requests: Odd payment methods (gift cards, crypto), or asking for sensitive info via video? Major red flag!

Two Steps to Stay Safe

Verification is your superpower! Financial pros recommend:

  1. STOP, CALL, and CONFIRM: Before you send money or share info, pause. Contact the person or org using a trusted, independently verified number or website – NOT the one in the suspicious message.
  2. Family/Team Code Word: Agree on a secret phrase. If someone calls needing cash, ask for the code. No response? Hang up and verify.

Common Deepfake Scam Tactics

“The goal is always the same: your money or sensitive info,” says Kimberly Reece, a financial crimes expert. Here are some common scams:

  • CEO/Executive Fraud: Fake bosses demanding urgent wire transfers.
  • Grandparent/Family Emergencies: Voice cloning turns social media audio into a plea from a "grandchild" in crisis.
  • Romance Scams: Fake identities (sometimes using deepfaked celebrity faces!) build trust before asking for cash.
  • Investment/Crypto Schemes: Deepfaked endorsements push fake opportunities.

Something Feels Fishy?

If your spidey sense is tingling:

  • End the convo ASAP!
  • Stay calm. Don't let emotion cloud your judgment.
  • Verify using saved contacts or official channels.
  • Report it to your bank, law enforcement, and consumer protection agencies.

Knowledge is Power!

Deepfake detection tools are improving, but staying alert is key. Remember: in a world of fake videos and audio, when money or data is on the line, always stop, call, and confirm. Your future self will thank you!

SEC Mulls Slap on Kiffin's Wrist

Word on the street is the Southeastern Conference might be giving LSU's head football coach, Lane Kiffin, a good ol' fashioned talking-to. Seems his spicy comments about rival Ole Miss didn't sit too well with the powers that be.

Dems' Memorial Day Mishap?

Controversy alert! Some folks are saying the Democrats used Memorial Day for political points, name-dropping folks like Maine Kampf Graham Platner and even George Floyd. Ouch! Critics claim this shows they don't respect the day's true meaning.

Huntsville Housing Curfew's Back

The Huntsville Housing Authority is cracking down. A summer curfew is back in effect for public housing residents as city officials try to tackle safety issues in the North Alabama area.

Tuberville Blocks Jan 6 Restitution Bill

Senator Tommy Tuberville, fresh off a National Championship coaching gig, put the brakes on a Democrat bill aimed at halting potential restitution to January 6 protesters. Tuberville claims hundreds of innocent, patriotic Americans are unjustly behind bars.

White House Shooting Sparks Ballroom Push

The U.S. Department of Justice is calling a recent shooting at the White House another attempt on President Trump's life. The officers shot and killed the suspect, Nasire Best. The incident is now being used to justify overturning an injunction blocking construction of a new secure White House ballroom for national security reasons.

Alabama GOP Race Heats Up!

Get ready for fireworks! The Alabama GOP races are entering the final stretch, and attack ads are flying. U.S. Rep. Barry Moore and ex-Navy SEAL Jared Hudson are duking it out on faith and conservatism before the June 16 runoff. Meanwhile, lawmakers are trying to shine a light on "dark money" in state politics for more transparency.

Iran Tensions Rise Amid Trump Deal Talk

Things are getting tense in Iran with some new attacks on the horizon. Iran is talking about "mass sacrifice" and Saddam Hussein during Trump deal negotiations. The White House is firing back at Senator Ted Cruz and ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for bashing President Trump's peace efforts. Trump wants Arab nations to sign the Abraham Accords.
