Hold on to your hats, ChumCity! We've got a political shake-up! Terry Waters, a Robertsdale farmer and Army vet, just pulled off a major upset, unseating three-term incumbent State Senator Greg Albritton in the Republican primary for Alabama Senate District 22.

By the Numbers

Waters snagged 9,084 votes (that's 52.1%) compared to Albritton's 8,349 (47.9%). It was a tight race, with Waters winning by around 735 votes across Baldwin, Mobile, Washington, and Escambia counties.

Albritton's Reign

Albritton, a big name as the Senate General Fund budget committee chairman, has been in the Senate since 2014 after a four-year stint in the Alabama House. He's been the Senate's point person on those big gambling bills every year.

David vs. Goliath?

Despite being the underdog financially – Albritton had a whopping $463,000 compared to Waters' $16,500 – Waters rallied a winning team. He scored major support from the Alabama Farmers Federation's chapters in Baldwin, Mobile, Washington, and Escambia counties. Talk about a grassroots victory!

FarmPAC, ALFA's political arm, was practically unstoppable, boasting that their endorsed candidates either won or advanced to runoffs in 21 out of 25 Republican primary battles. Four sitting Republican lawmakers even got the boot thanks to FarmPAC-backed challengers. Ouch!

Big Names Fall

FarmPAC's biggest win? Taking down State Senator Greg Albritton, the General Fund budget chair since 2014. Farmer and veteran Terry Waters snagged the seat, leaving Albritton in the dust by just 735 votes. Talk about a nail-biter!

Alabama voters hit the polls Tuesday for a primary election with wide-open races for Governor and U.S. Senate. But get this: turnout was pretty much the same as four years ago.

Numbers Don't Lie (Much)

According to the state's unofficial tallies, 879,381 ballots were cast, which is about 23.11% of registered voters. Back in 2022? We saw 851,684 voters, clocking in at 23.4% turnout. So, basically a tie!

Fresh Faces, Same Results?

You'd think with Governor Ivey term-limited and Senator Tuberville chasing the Governor's gig (creating a big ol' Republican free-for-all in both races), things would be different. Nope! Turnout stayed stubbornly consistent.

City vs. Country: Who Showed Up?

While the overall numbers held steady, some of Alabama's biggest cities seemed a little sleepy. Jefferson, Mobile, and Madison Counties lagged behind rural areas like Coffee, Covington, and Morgan. Looks like the smaller counties brought the fire!
