Hoover's own U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer just announced the winner of the 2026 Congressional Art Competition for Alabama's Sixth District, and a local talent took home the top prize!

Ever Waites of Westminster School at Oak Mountain snagged the win! This nationwide competition, backed by the Congressional Institute, celebrates and encourages high school artists.

Enable Madison County, a local non-profit dedicated to helping seniors and homebound folks live independently, joined forces with volunteers from the Redstone Arsenal Silver Chapter of the U.S. Army Warrant Officers Association. Their mission? To design and build a custom wheelchair ramp for the family’s home!

Big news, ChumCityzens! The 9/11 Memorial & Museum in NYC is stepping up to honor our amazing veterans this Memorial Day weekend. Starting Friday, all veterans get in FREE! It's their way of saying "thank you" to those who selflessly answered the call after the events of September 11, 2001.

Remembering 9/11 and Honoring Service

The museum already offers free admission to active-duty military, but this Memorial Day, they're extending that generosity to all veterans. Josh Cherwin, Chief Advancement and Communications Officer, emphasized the importance of remembering 9/11, a day that inspired so many to serve.

Educating a New Generation

"For countless Americans, September 11, 2001, was a call to serve," Cherwin explained. He highlights that many young recruits have no direct memory of 9/11. This free admission is a way to honor their service and educate a new generation about that pivotal moment in history.

John Paluska, a retired Army Green Beret and member of the museum's Visionary Leadership Council, who enlisted after 9/11, believes it's crucial for the next generation to learn about that day and its impact. Fort Rucker Bids Farewell to a Legend!

After an incredible 50 years of service, Fort Rucker waved goodbye to Barbara Harper! This local icon retired this month, having witnessed HUGE transformations at the Wiregrass installation.

Half a Century of Dedication

A retirement ceremony was held on May 20th to celebrate Harper's amazing contributions. Installation leaders recognized that her career practically predates Army Aviation itself!

"Go Ask Barbara!"

Col. Sean Keefe lauded Harper's commitment, calling it an example of extraordinary service. He noted her decades of experience and leadership made her a go-to person for colleagues. Apparently, "Go ask Barbara" wasn't just a suggestion; it was a testament to her expertise!

From Typewriters to Tech

Harper started her journey on January 28, 1974, thanks to encouragement from her husband, Lewis. Back then, things were VERY different. Think paper trails and typewriters! "I’ve seen this place go from the typewriter to the computer to where we are today," Harper reminisced.

A Constant Through Change

She adapted to rapid tech advancements, helped modernize operations, and expertly managed budgets and logistics for massive organizations. Even when facing health concerns, her love for the work and her colleagues kept her going!

A Fond Farewell

Harper described Fort Rucker as a major part of her life. She expressed gratitude for the Soldiers, civilians, and coworkers she worked with and said she'll miss the daily chats and camaraderie.

Retirement Plans

Looking ahead, Harper plans to spend more time with family, support her husband’s ministry, and remain active in her church and community. "It’s been an honor of a lifetime to serve in this organization," she said. We salute you, Barbara!

T-38 Talon Fleet Grounded!

Whoa! The U.S. Air Force just put the brakes on all T-38 Talon flights after last week's close call with a jet from Columbus Air Force Base out in west Alabama.

Safety First!

The Air Force is playing it super safe, calling the pause "out of an abundance of caution" while they dig into what happened on May 12. The jet belonged to the Mississippi base.

What's the Hold Up?

This time out lets the Safety Investigation Board sniff around for clues and double-check everything is A-Okay for our aircrews and planes.

Talon Down (But Everyone's Okay!)

The jet was a T-38 Talon II, a speedy trainer jet. Thankfully, both pilots punched out before it went down, and everyone's safe and sound.

Mystery Mishap

Air Force peeps are still scratching their heads about what caused the crash. The investigation is ongoing, and there's no word yet on how long the grounding will last. They're doing some serious engineering analysis and figuring out how to inspect the whole fleet.

Simulator Time!

The pause hits T-38s in a bunch of commands, including Air Education and Training Command. Crews will keep sharp with simulator training, so they're ready to rock when the all-clear comes.

When Will They Fly Again?

Individual planes can get back in the air after inspections and any fixes, but the Air Force hasn't said when the whole fleet will be cleared for takeoff.
