Plans for a proposed Dolly Parton's Pirates Voyage Dinner Theater in Orange Beach have hit a snag, folks! Intense public outcry seems to have at least temporarily scuttled the project. The proposal's Planned Unit Development request was yanked from this week's Orange Beach Planning Commission agenda. Just days before, residents packed the Orange Beach Performing Arts Center for a town hall, voicing major concerns. Traffic woes, environmental impacts, and the overall fit with Orange Beach's long-term vibe were all on the table. The proposed theater was slated for a 24-acre spot on Orange Beach Boulevard, currently home to Beech Camper & Mobile Home Park. This project hinges on a reported $14 million property deal, but only if the Planned Unit Development gets the green light. According to reports, World Choice Investments of Pigeon Forge, the project's management firm, pulled the item from the May 11th agenda. The clock is ticking, though! The proposal reportedly needs to reappear before the commission by June 8th, or the application process starts all over. Residents aren't necessarily against the theater itself. The real issue is its proposed location on one of Orange Beach's busiest roads. The town hall saw serious concerns raised about increased traffic on Highway 161, drainage into Terry Cove, and potential environmental damage. Folks are also worried about preserving trees and wildlife habitats. Does this development align with the city's 2020 comprehensive plan? Some are wondering. An online petition against the theater's location quickly gained traction, gathering over 1,300 signatures in just days. "I truly believe the town hall and the voices of our community made a difference,†posted Orange Beach resident Dean Remington. "No matter where you stood on this issue, this was a reminder that community involvement matters and that the people should always have a voice in the future of their city," he added. The proposed dinner theater would reportedly cover around 59,000 square feet, featuring up to three shows daily during peak season. Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon has defended the city’s review process. He pointed out that the property is likely to be developed regardless of the theater project. The city is also considering buying part of the land for drainage and conservation. For now, the proposal's off the table. But the bigger discussion about growth, tourism, and the future of Orange Beach is far from over.Pirates Voyage Plan Sails into Rough Seas in Orange Beach
