Dreaming of a White Christmas in Alabama? Think Again!

Looks like Old Man Winter is taking a vacation this year! Alabamians hoping for a snowy Christmas are likely going to be disappointed. Forecasters across the state agree: Christmas Eve is shaping up to be mild and mostly dry.

Unseasonably Warm Air on the Way

WVTM 13 says the forecast models are pointing towards a shift from the recent cold snap to unseasonably warm air by Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Confidence is growing that temperatures will soar well above late-December averages – possibly reaching the upper 60s or even low 70s!

James Spann Weighs In

Longtime Alabama weather guru James Spann is also predicting a warm Christmas week for the whole state. He notes temperatures will remain well above average, with daytime highs hitting the 60s and 70s. Overnight lows will stay in the 40s and 50s, solidifying the lack of wintery vibes.

Gulf Coast Agrees

FOX10 News meteorologists along the Gulf Coast are singing the same tune. They say the overall weather pattern leading into Christmas Eve will be mild and largely dry, leaving virtually no chance for snow anywhere in Alabama. Bummer!

Dry Weather Expected

All forecasts indicate mostly dry weather through Christmas Eve, with no major rain systems expected to disrupt holiday travel or outdoor shenanigans. While a few isolated showers are possible earlier in the week, widespread rain on Christmas Eve itself isn't in the cards.

Warmer Than Usual

Average temps for late December in Alabama usually range from the low to mid-50s, making this year's forecast noticeably warmer. Meteorologists are quick to point out that longer-range forecasts still have some wiggle room, but the trend toward a mild holiday is holding steady.

Plan Accordingly

So, those planning Christmas Eve services, gatherings, or last-minute shopping sprees can expect comfy temperatures and agreeable weather. Just don’t expect to be building any snowmen!

Mild Christmas Day Too

Forecasters predict the mild pattern will continue into Christmas Day, with above-average temperatures and generally dry conditions creating a holiday that feels more like early fall than late December across much of Alabama. Grab your flip-flops!

Christian Leaders Flock to Israel: A Show of Solidarity

Hot off the press! A massive wave of support washed over Israel this month as a record-breaking group of American Christian leaders descended upon the Holy Land. Imagine: over one thousand pastors and Christian bigwigs, all united for a powerful mission.

"Friends of Zion" Project Takes Center Stage

This wasn't just any trip; it was a carefully orchestrated initiative dubbed "Friends of Zion," in partnership with Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The goal? To arm these influential figures with the knowledge and passion to become unofficial ambassadors for Israel back in their own communities.

Facing the Horrors, Speaking Truth

The delegation had heavy but important work. They met with survivors of the devastating October 7th attack, hearing firsthand accounts of the tragedy. Dr. Mike Evans, head of "Friends of Zion" and a key advisor, minced no words: "These devils that hate Jews hate Christians just as much." He stressed the importance of recognizing and confronting the rising tide of antisemitism.

A United Front Against Ideological Warfare

Evans emphasized that the battles of today aren't just fought on the battlefield, but also in the media and through ideology. He pointed to the Muslim Brotherhood's influence and warned of the dangers of ignoring radical Islamic ideologies.

Echoes from Alabama

Our very own Alabama was represented! Pastors and leaders from the state joined the mission, including Greg Davis, president of ALCAP, and received words of support from former Governor Fob James. Pastor Travis Johnson of Pathway Church called on others to stand against violence disguised as religion and to pray for the peace of Israel, calling it “the ONLY bulwark against Islamic extremism in the Middle East.”

A Promise for the Future

With 2,000 applications and only 1,000 accepted, the interest was intense, and plans are already in motion for another trip in 2026! This is a powerful demonstration of faith and commitment to truth and justice, and it’s happening right now.

First Solar Shines in Alabama: An American Manufacturing Success Story

Forget China! First Solar, an American solar manufacturing powerhouse, is bucking the trend and planting its roots firmly in the USA. Last year, they opened a massive plant in Lawrence County, Alabama, injecting over 800 manufacturing jobs into the local economy. And get this: their ENTIRE steel supply chain is within a mere 25-mile radius of the factory. How's that for local!

More Than Just Solar

This isn't just about solar panels; it's an "America First" manufacturing triumph. Remember President Trump's prediction of a "golden age" of American manufacturing? Lawrence County is proof that it's happening!

From Devastation to Determination

This community knows resilience. After International Paper shut down a decade ago, leaving 1,100 jobless, residents wondered if manufacturing would ever return.

The Return of Manufacturing

Enter First Solar, building a colossal $1.1 billion, 2.4-million-square-foot facility, strategically located in Trinity. This isn't just about convenience; it's about plugging into the Tennessee Valley's manufacturing corridor, tapping into suppliers, trucking lanes, and reliable infrastructure.

A Win for America

Congressman Dale Strong sees First Solar's facility as the epitome of President Trump's "Made in America" vision. He emphasizes that it's bringing back good-paying jobs, revitalizing rural communities, and bolstering America's energy independence, right there in North Alabama.

"American Energy Technology, American Jobs"

First Solar's CEO, Mark Widmar, sums it up perfectly: This is about making American energy technology, creating American jobs, and fueling it all with an American supply chain. Thanks to an America-first approach, they're bringing prosperity to Alabama by maintaining jobs and sourcing key materials locally.

Tariffs Level the Playing Field

Tariffs on foreign-made solar panels are helping American manufacturers compete, protecting these crucial jobs. The "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" has further strengthened the position of companies like First Solar.

Trump's Policies are Working

China has been trying to corner the solar market for years, but Trump's policies are America's answer. By bringing production back home and investing in US factories, First Solar is ensuring that critical energy technology is "Made in America," not controlled by our adversaries.

Christmas in ChumCity and Beyond!

Hey ChumCity folks, let's take a breath amidst the holiday hustle! It's that time of year when even the busiest among us slow down to gather with family, maybe say a little prayer, and remember what really matters.

The Christmas Promise

Remember that old saying: “For unto you is born this day...a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Still rings true, doesn't it? That promise lives on in the hearts of believers and keeps shaping our homes, our neighborhoods, and our whole crazy country.

Faith in Everyday Life

Down here in Alabama, faith isn't just for Sundays, y'all. It's part of our daily grind. It’s in the churches, the families teaching their kids right from wrong, and neighbors lending a hand when someone's down. That's what we're all about!

Building on Solid Values

Love, humility, sacrifice, and helping others – those are the bricks and mortar of everything we build around here.

A Light in the Dark

The Christmas story reminds us that God often works through the little guy, the humble folks. A baby in a manger brought salvation, showing us that even when things look bleak, God's light can't be snuffed out.

A Steady Guide

That truth gives us strength – not just in ourselves or some government program, but in the Lord who leads the way. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet," as the saying goes!

Hometown Heroes

Big shoutout to all the Alabamians who live this spirit every day! Our servicemembers, first responders, farmers, small business owners, and everyone who gives without expecting anything back - you're the real deal.

Remembering Those in Need

Let’s remember those who are hurting this Christmas – those who are grieving, worried, or alone. Even with the recent violence we've seen around the globe, remember that Christmas is about hope, and hope's never out of reach when you have faith.

A Season to Renew

This isn't just a time to look back; it’s a time to recommit! Let’s renew our faith, love our neighbors, and stick to the values that unite us. If we do, the future's gonna be bright!

Hope Shines On

Even when things feel chaotic, remember that God brought hope into the world in a quiet stable under a starry sky. That hope still shines, guiding us through the darkness.

May your Christmas be filled with peace, strength, and renewed hope! Merry Christmas, y'all, and may God bless you and yours.

Old School Alabama Politics: A Changing Landscape

Back in the day, rookie politicians in Alabama learned the ropes from seasoned veterans. They passed down wisdom, rules, and truisms that every aspiring leader should know.

The "Local" Rule

One golden rule was, "all politics is local." Even if you were a state or national legislator, your priority was always your homefolks. You listened to their needs and concerns.

The Endorsement Taboo

Another key principle? Stay out of other people's races. No public endorsements, no open support. "Stick to your own knitting," they'd say. Why? Because endorsements were a minefield. You’d make one ungrateful friend and a thousand enemies. Plus, who were you to assume your popularity could transfer? Voters would bristle at the arrogance and do the opposite out of spite. George Wallace himself couldn't make endorsements stick – his record was 0-10!

Trump's Influence and National Politics

Today, things have changed. Donald Trump's endorsement is now a golden ticket in Alabama. Politics is less local, more national, driven by national partisan allegiance.

Do Endorsements Still Matter?

Do group or organizational endorsements still hold weight? The answer is complicated. They matter more in down-ballot races, especially legislative ones. Special interests focus on the legislature because that's where the big decisions affecting their agenda get made.

Key Conservative Groups

In a conservative state like Alabama, endorsements from pro-business groups are crucial. The Alabama Farmers Federation (ALFA) is the holy grail. Their endorsement is sought by every statewide candidate. It's a seal of conservative approval that reaches over 300,000 Alabamians. Other key groups include the Alabama Forestry Association, the Business Council of Alabama, and Manufacture Alabama.

Races to Watch

Several candidates, including Senator Tommy Tuberville and Young Boozer, have secured endorsements from all four groups. Caroleene Dobson and Derek Chen have also won all four in their races for Secretary of State and State Auditor respectively. The Lt. Governor's race, Agriculture Commissioner race, and Attorney General race will be significantly impacted by the ALFA endorsement. Wes Allen secured ALFA in his race for Lt. Governor, Corey Hill became a serious contender after securing ALFA in the Agriculture Commissioner race, and Katherine Robertson is now a viable candidate in the Attorney General race due to securing ALFA.

The Verdict?

Do endorsements count? We'll find out soon!

Until next time,

Steve Flowers

The racing world and ChumCity mourn the tragic loss of Greg Biffle and his family, who perished in a plane crash in North Carolina on Thursday. Biffle, 55, a NASCAR icon, leaves behind a legacy etched in speed and community.

Biffle's Alabama Connection

For Alabama race fans, this devastating news brings back echoes of a similar tragedy. In 2002, Jack Roush, Biffle's team owner, miraculously survived a near-fatal plane crash near Talladega, rescued by a local hero. The Biffle family, often seen cheering Greg on at Talladega, had become familiar faces.

A NASCAR Legend

Named one of NASCAR's 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023, Biffle's career spanned 16 years in the Cup Series, driving the No. 16 car with passion. He also clinched championships in the Craftsman Truck Series (200 and the Busch Series (2002). Remember that near-miss Cup Series Championship in 2005? Biffle was a true contender!

More Than Just a Driver

Beyond the track, Biffle held a special connection to Alabama. He even visited Maxwell Air Force Base in 2014, participating in leadership exercises with Airmen.

Biffmas: Spreading Christmas Cheer

Biffle's generosity shone through his annual "Biffmas" gifting program in Alabama, touching lives just this month.

Heroic Efforts After Hurricane Helene

Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene in 2024, Biffle and his family selflessly dedicated their resources and time to rescue and recovery efforts in Western North Carolina, flying in supplies and helping strangers.

Investigation Underway

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash of Biffle's Cessna Citation C550 jet. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Statesville Regional Airport.

A Lasting Memorial

Fans are organizing a memorial at the International Motorsport Hall of Fame and Museum outside of the Talladega Speedway, a testament to the Biffle family's enduring impact.

The Biffle family's legacy of speed, generosity, and community spirit will never be forgotten.

Oyster Season's Closing Time!

Hey ChumCity shellfish fans! Mark your calendars because the Alabama oyster harvest from public waters is wrapping up! At 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, the gates close for the season.

A Big Thanks!

A huge shoutout to everyone who helped make this season a success – the Marine Resources Division (MRD) of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR), the Alabama Department of Public Health, our amazing commercial oyster catchers, seafood dealers, and all our partners! Your hard work ensures we're taking care of Alabama's oyster resources.

By the Numbers

This year, the public oyster reefs were open for 54 glorious days. During that time, an estimated 5,000 sacks – that's 425,000 pounds! – of oysters were harvested, bringing in over $170,000 dockside. Not too shabby!

Challenges Faced

MRD Director Kevin Anson noted that surveys showed fewer harvestable oysters compared to last year. Turns out, our tasty bivalves have been dealing with some tough conditions, including fluctuating salinity and water temps. These factors have impacted the survival of young oysters, which could mean fewer adult oysters next year.

Looking Ahead

But don't worry, the MRD is on it! They're studying oyster larval settlement and water quality to find the best spots to restore Alabama's oyster reefs. This important work is funded by a $10 million award from the Natural Resources Damage Assessment. The goal? To keep our oyster reefs thriving for future generations!

About ADCNR

ADCNR is all about protecting and enjoying Alabama's natural resources. Learn more about their work at the outdooralabama website!
