Bye-Bye Buildings! NASA's Making Room for the Future!

Get ready, Rocket City! Next weekend, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center is saying "sayonara" to a couple of its most iconic, but outdated, test structures. We're talking about the Dynamic Test Stand and the legendary "T-Tower" (officially the Propulsion and Structural Test Facility). These old-timers are coming down in a carefully planned demolition on Saturday, January 10th.

Why the Big Bang?

Don't worry, it's all for a good cause! These buildings have reached the end of their operational life. NASA's making way for a shiny, modern campus, reducing the cost and risk of keeping up with old infrastructure. Think of it as a spring cleaning of epic proportions!

A Boost from Big Bucks!

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman says this is a smart move to use taxpayer dollars wisely. It allows NASA to modernize, streamline operations, and fully take advantage of new infrastructure investments. Word on the street is the new One Big Beautiful Bill, signed by President Trump, is making it happen.

More Than Just a Facelift

This demolition is just the beginning! It's part of a bigger plan to retire a total of 25 outdated structures on Marshall's main campus. Less maintenance, fewer safety headaches, and more space for the next generation of space exploration facilities? Yes, please!

Funding with a Deadline!

Here's the kicker: this isn't just a wishlist. The new federal funding structure forces NASA to modernize, and fast! The One Big Beautiful Bill Act includes a cool $1 billion specifically for improving infrastructure at manned spaceflight centers. The law sets minimum spending and strict deadlines. Marshall Space Flight Center must spend at least $100,000,000 by 2026, with more deadlines to follow.

From Rubble to Rocket Science!

Demolishing old buildings is the quickest way to clear the way for new construction. NASA needs to remove the old before they can pour new concrete, reroute utilities, and build the cutting-edge facilities of tomorrow. Get ready to welcome the future, Rocket City!

What's Up With All the Protests?

From marching for science and against ICE, to even taking aim at "Kings" (whatever that means!), we've seen it all in the streets. But hold up... now we're seeing protests in favor of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro? Seriously?

Is it Really "America First?"

According to Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery), the moves against Venezuela are totally legit and all about putting America first. Hmmm. Is that the whole story?

Trump Derangement Syndrome?

Could it be that the American Left's dislike for President Trump is blinding them to, well, everything else? Just asking!

UAB Pulls Off a Double-Overtime Thriller!

Talk about a nail-biter! The UAB Blazers journeyed to Tampa and delivered a performance worthy of the Final Four, battling the University of South Florida in an absolute barnburner. After two overtimes, UAB emerged victorious, 109-106!

Facing the Odds

The Blazers faced a mountain to climb. Down by 11 with just five minutes left in regulation, things looked grim. To make matters worse, UAB's three tallest players fouled out, leaving them undersized and facing a roaring crowd of USF Bulls.

Grit and Determination

But UAB refused to quit! Showing true Gene Bartow spirit, they clawed their way back from the brink, snatching victory in dramatic fashion. This win also prevented Coach Andy Kennedy from suffering his first 0-2 start in conference play in his six seasons at the helm.

Back Home to Bartow

The Blazers (10-5 overall, 1-1 in ACF) are back at Bartow Arena on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to take on Florida Atlantic. Don't miss the action!

The Affordability Squeeze: Are We Really Getting Poorer?

Is the dream of an affordable life slipping away? It's a hot topic in policy circles, and for good reason. But what's really going on? And what can – or should – the government do about it? Plus, is it possible that the poverty line is secretly a whopping $140,000 a year?

Playing the Numbers Game: CPI and Your Wallet

Economic stats, like the Consumer Price Index (CPI), are useful but they don't tell the whole story of your financial life. The CPI tracks a massive basket of goods, but the prices of the things you actually buy might be skyrocketing while others are falling. It's a broad brush, not a detailed portrait!

Inflation: It's Not the Same Everywhere

Inflation isn't a uniform monster. Prices rise differently across the country. What's happening in the South isn't necessarily mirroring the Midwest, Northeast, or West. Even within those regions, the inflation rate can vary widely from city to city.

CPI: A Reality Check?

We humans tend to remember the things that annoy us, like rising prices. The CPI gives us an objective benchmark. While it's not perfect, the 2.7% increase in the CPI provides a baseline. Inflation has slowed down since 2022.

Income: The Real Affordability Meter

The best way to gauge affordability is by looking at real, inflation-adjusted income. It's been growing, but not as fast as it used to. However, there are changes since the 40s that complicate straight comparisons.

The Changing Face of Households

Households are smaller today. Factors like divorce and later marriages are shrinking household size. Also, benefits now make up a much larger chunk of total compensation.

Taking these shifts into account, real compensation has increased. Still healthy growth!

Real Income Under the Presidents

Real income had sluggish growth under President Biden. Data shows real median household income grew less than under President Trump's first term. Lower income households even saw real income fall.

The Big-Ticket Items: Housing, Energy, and Healthcare

We live in a world of limited resources! There's no magic wand to make scarcity disappear. Trying to hide high prices with taxpayer money usually backfires.

Government's Role in High Costs

Governments play a major role in boosting the cost of housing, energy, and healthcare through zoning regulations, government funding, and renewable energy policies.

Is the Poverty Line $140,000?

One financial analyst argues that the real poverty line for a family of four might be closer to $140,000 than the official figure. He points to the hidden costs of participating in today's economy.

The "Participation Tax"

Think about phone service. A landline in the 50s was cheap. Today, smartphones and cell service are essential for everything! These mandatory costs add up.

The Second-Income Squeeze

Even bigger costs hit when both spouses work, like daycare and a second car. A new car is significantly more expensive. These participation costs can eat up much of that second income.

The Bottom Line

Economic stats can only tell part of the story. Figuring out affordability is complex. Hopefully, we can focus political pressure on government policies that needlessly drive up costs. We also need to be aware of how "participation costs" are squeezing families.

Big news, ChumCity fam! Coach Alex Golesh is shaking things up on The Plains, building a dream team for the Tigers' new era. And guess who's coming home?

Kodi Burns Returns to Auburn!

That's right! Former Auburn standout and national champion Kodi Burns is back in the orange and blue! He's snagged three titles: Associate Head Coach, Co-Offensive Coordinator, and Wide Receivers Coach. Talk about a power player!

Golesh's Trust in Burns

Golesh himself is hyped, stating, "I’ve been fortunate to work with Kodi three times in my career, and there was no question that I would bring him back to his alma mater." He's calling Burns one of the top offensive coaches and recruiters, plus a man of integrity. Sounds like a perfect fit!

Burns' Auburn History

This isn't Burns' first rodeo on The Plains. He's been a graduate assistant and WR coach before. Plus, he's worked with Golesh at Tennessee and USF, even spending time with the New Orleans Saints.

A Tiger Through and Through

Remember Burns the player? He rocked both QB and WR for the Tigers from 2007-2010. Dude was a threat, racking up passing yards, rushing yards, and touchdowns.

What Does This Mean for Auburn?

This is huge! Golesh clearly trusts Burns implicitly, so expect big things from this dynamic duo. Get ready, ChumCity, it's gonna be a wild ride!

Tide Roll On! Alabama Snags Thrilling Playoff Victory!

The Alabama Crimson Tide pulled off a stunning 34-24 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman Friday night! The nail-biting win secures a spot in the Rose Bowl and a showdown with the top-ranked, undefeated Indiana Hoosiers.

Early Trouble? No Problem!

Things looked bleak at the start. The Sooners came out firing, and Alabama found themselves in a 17-0 hole after a series of stalled drives. Were the Tide about to get washed away?

Turning the Tide (Pun Intended)

Absolutely not! Alabama roared back with a gutsy nine-play drive, capped by a clutch fourth-down conversion to Lotzeir Brooks, making it 17-7. A blocked punt and field goal followed, bringing the score to 17-10.

Pick-Six Momentum Shift

Then, BOOM! Oklahoma's quarterback threw a gift right into the hands of Zabien Brown, who returned it for a game-tying touchdown just before halftime! What a momentum swing!

Second-Half Surge

The second half saw Ty Simpson connect with Brooks again for a go-ahead touchdown, putting Alabama up 24-17. The Tide defense tightened its grip, forcing a quick Oklahoma punt. A field goal extended the lead, but the Sooners weren't done.

Holding On Tight

Oklahoma narrowed the gap to 3 points with a touchdown early in the fourth. But the Alabama defense stood tall, forcing another turnover in Oklahoma territory. Daniel Hill punched in a decisive touchdown, putting the game almost out of reach.

Kicking Woes Doom Sooners

Two missed Oklahoma field goals in the fourth quarter sealed the deal. The Tide ran out the clock, securing a hard-fought victory!

Rose Bowl Bound!

Next stop: Pasadena! The Crimson Tide are heading back to the Rose Bowl to face Indiana on New Year's Day, with a spot in the CFP semifinals on the line. Get ready for some football, ChumCity!

SCOTUS Could Shake Up Campaign Finance!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCityzens! The Supreme Court is eyeballing a case that could totally rewrite the rules of the game for political parties and federal elections, not just in Alabama but everywhere!

The Case in Question

The Supremes just chewed on a case that kicked off in Ohio, and even has Vice President J.D. Vance in the mix. It's a challenge from the Republican side, aiming to loosen the reins on how much political parties can spend when working with candidates running for Congress or the Presidency.

What's at Stake?

If the court swings Republican, it could overturn a 2001 ruling that backed a key part of federal election law—you know, the one that's been around since the Federal Election Campaign Act of '71.

Kavanaugh's Take

Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh seems to think weakening political parties has been a drag on democracy, with Super PACs and other outside groups flexing their muscles. Kavanaugh believes this case could be a step in bringing the parties back to strength!

Sotomayor's Concerns

On the flip side, Justice Sonia Sotomayor isn't so sure. She warned that the court's "tinkering causes more harm than good." She fears that removing coordinated expenditure limits could lead to a free-for-all with absolutely no control over spending.

The Numbers Game

Right now, party committees can spend between $61,800 and $123,000 for House seats and between $123,600 and a whopping $3.7 million for Senate seats, according to the FEC.

When Will We Know?

The Court is expected to drop its ruling in June or July of 2026. Stay tuned, ChumCity, this one's going to be a wild ride!

DeBoer's Staying Put!

All those silly whispers about Alabama's head football coach, Kalen DeBoer, jumping ship? Forget about it! After the team's victory against Oklahoma, DeBoer himself squashed the rumors, making it clear he's not interested in the Michigan head coaching gig, despite their apparent interest.

Turning Point USA's AmFest: A Civil War?

TPUSA's AmFest was a rollercoaster! While Democrats took heat for supposed "authoritarian" moves and Trump's policies were lauded, the real fireworks were within the right. Big names like Ben Shapiro called out folks like Candace Owens for conspiracy theories and antisemitism, while others blasted Shapiro for his pro-Israel stance. Democrats and the media are probably enjoying all the drama.

DNC Secrets and Silenced Voices

The DNC's 2024 election post-mortem? Under lock and key! Progressives and moderates are united in their frustration, slamming the decision to keep the report secret, especially after perceived "messaging" failures and questionable candidate choices. What's the DNC hiding?

Senator Orr Sounds Off on Highway Folly

State Senator Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) is calling foul on the governor's decision-making regarding the West Alabama Corridor highway project. He's questioning the economic growth claims and calling them a "fallacy" and wondering if other, more needed road projects are being ignored due to bad prioritization.

Tuberville Warns of Obamacare "Hoax"

Governor-elect, National Championship-winning Coach, and U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is sounding the alarm! In an op-ed, he's warning voters about what he calls Democrats' "latest Obamacare hoax" as COVID subsidies expire. His solution? Market reforms, not subsidy extensions, to keep premiums down and choices up.

Are Alabama Democrats... Alive?

One of Alabama's biggest cheerleaders insists the Democratic Party is alive and kicking! We have former Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) taking on Senator Tuberville (R-Auburn), former failed gubernatorial candidate Ron Sparks seeking his old Agriculture Commissioner job, and State Sen. Philip Ensler (D-Dothan) running for lieutenant governor. Stay tuned!

Epstein Files: The Saga Continues

The Jeffrey Epstein file release is far from over. The initial drop of partially redacted documents didn't satisfy anyone. The Justice Department had to restore some photos they initially removed, and thousands more documents are on the way. Former President Bill Clinton has been spotted in multiple photos. Buckle up, ChumCity!
