Alabama Teachers Union Joins Fight Over Online Sales Tax!

The Alabama Education Association (AEA), the state's biggest teachers union, is throwing down the gauntlet! They're joining a growing number of Alabama cities suing the state, claiming the Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT) is stiffing public schools.

What's the Beef with the SSUT?

Basically, the AEA says Alabama's current way of handling online sales tax is robbing our schools blind. The SSUT is an 8% tax on online sales from companies without a physical store in Alabama. But here's the kicker: only a tiny sliver (1%) goes to the Education Trust Fund.

Schools Losing Out Big Time

Think about it: almost all regular sales tax money goes straight to schools. With online shopping booming, the SSUT is raking in serious cash – over $851 million in 2024 alone! But our schools are only getting crumbs.

AEA: "This Ain't Right!"

"The SSUT shortchanges Alabama's local schools," says Theron Stokes from the AEA. He argues that letting online sellers pay the SSUT instead of regular sales taxes is diverting millions from the Education Trust Fund.

Lawsuit Time!

The AEA is challenging how the Alabama Department of Revenue runs the SSUT, arguing it's not following state law. They say the SSUT made sense as a temporary fix, but now it's outdated and hurting our schools.

"We Will Act," Says AEA

The AEA wants to make sure educators' voices are heard as the courts decide the future of online sales tax in Alabama. "When school funding is at risk, AEA will act," Stokes declared. "We will always stand for a tax system that is fair, lawful and ensures public education receives its rightful share."

Alabama Finally Greenlights Medical Marijuana Dispensaries!

After what felt like an eternity (over four years to be exact!), filled with legal battles and frustrating delays, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) has finally awarded the first medical marijuana dispensary licenses! This groundbreaking decision clears the biggest hurdle yet, bringing relief closer to patients who need it.

Dispensaries Get the Go-Ahead

At a State House meeting, the AMCC forged ahead, issuing the first four dispensary licenses, a crucial step before doctors can get certified and patients can legally purchase medical cannabis. Licenses were approved for GP6 Wellness LLC, RJK Holdings LLC, and CCS of Alabama LLC. A fourth license for Yellowhammer Medical Dispensaries LLC was also approved, but will be put on hold until a hearing January 26.

Spring 2026: Possible Launch?

AMCC Chairman Rex Vaughan estimates that qualified patients might be able to access medical cannabis as early as spring 2026. He also highlighted that several cultivators already have products ready and waiting, stuck in storage during the licensing limbo.

A Stretched-Thin Staff

Vaughan noted the challenges faced by his team: “Our staff has been stretched pretty thin here lately... We’ve got about four cultivators who in the process of growing, and they have a product staged and ready, so we’re on the cusp of getting that product to the fight to the finish line."

What's Next?

Each dispensary license holder can operate up to three stores across Alabama. With these licenses in place, the state can now begin certifying doctors, enrolling patients, and, for the first time ever, legally selling medical cannabis products!

A Milestone Moment

"It is a milestone day for us," Vaughan stated, adding that there's likely "a lot going on the next next few meetings." Finally, Alabama can "start plowing new ground" in medical cannabis.

Alabama Housing Market: What's Cookin' for 2026?

Alabama's housing scene is at a sweet spot as we cruise toward 2026! After a wild ride post-pandemic, things are finally chillin' out. More homes are available for buyers, and sellers who racked up equity are still in a good spot. Let's dive in!

Price Trends & What They Mean

Home values in spots like Birmingham, Huntsville, and Mobile kept climbin' at a steady pace throughout 2025, fueled by Alabama's rockin' economy. Expect this to keep rollin' into 2026, with prices likely to bump up 4-7%. Translation: Alabama stays affordable for buyers, and sellers can still bank on solid returns!

Expert Says...

"The housing market will be more balanced in 2026, as supply is increasing..." says economist Dr. Evan Moore. But, he warns sellers to expect moderate growth, "nothing like the price increases seen in 2021 and 2022." New construction? Still facing hurdles with pricier materials and labor, which could slow things down.

Affordability: Still a Big Deal

Economist David Hughes thinks affordability will continue to shape Alabama's housing game. "Buyers should feel encouraged about their ability to afford a home in Alabama," he says. More houses on the market give buyers some wiggle room, while sellers can still feel good.

Watch Out For...

Hughes points out some potential bumps in the road, like rising foreclosures, car loan defaults, and credit card debt. Student loan payments and everyday inflation could squeeze folks, especially younger buyers. This could slow down the market, even though things look good long-term.

2026: The Big Picture

Get ready for a mix of opportunity and steady growth. More homes on the market will balance things out, prices will stay reasonable, and Alabama's booming economy will keep demand strong. Keep an eye on national financial stuff, but Alabama's lookin' good to handle whatever comes its way. For buyers and sellers, 2026 is shaping up to be a year of stability and confidence!

Senator Britt Sounds the Alarm on Big Tech's Impact on Kids

Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) is turning up the heat on Big Tech, accusing them of prioritizing profits over protecting our children. In a recent appearance on Fox News, Britt highlighted the growing dangers kids face online and called on Congress to take action.

Time to Protect Our Precious Resource

Britt didn't mince words, stating that tech companies only care about their bottom line. She pointed to heartbreaking stories of families who have lost children due to harmful social media algorithms, asking how many more tragedies need to occur before lawmakers act. She commended Australia for implementing new social media restrictions for minors, urging the U.S. to follow suit and protect its "most valuable and precious asset: the next generation."

Overwhelming Evidence of Harm

Britt emphasized the negative impact of social media on teenagers, citing statistics showing increased feelings of negativity and depression among users aged 13 to 17. She argued that Congress's inaction is "feckless" and that it's time to establish "proper guardrails" to help children flourish.

A Digital World of Danger

Britt painted a stark picture of the dangers children face online, highlighting issues like fentanyl-laced drugs sold on social media, bullying leading to suicidal thoughts, AI chatbots engaging in inappropriate relationships with minors, and the rise of sextortion. She argued that parents are doing their best, but the digital landscape has changed dramatically, with predators having direct access to children through their devices.

Britt's Legislative Push

Britt's concerns reflect her ongoing efforts to curb online harms. She has introduced legislation like the Kids Off Social Media Act and the Stop the Scroll Act, and has actively questioned experts and parents of sextortion victims in Senate Judiciary Committee hearings. She is determined to hold social media platforms accountable and prioritize the safety of children in the digital age.

School Funding Fight! Alabama Ed Association vs. Sales Tax

The Alabama Education Association is throwin' down! They've joined lawsuits challenging the state's Simplified Sellers Use Tax program. A particular Army veteran's case was highlighted, but turns out the veteran self-deported. Noem insists no veterans have been deported, and challenges Congress to change the laws if they disagree. Road Rage! Ainsworth Slams $730 Million Bond Deal

Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth isn't happy! He's blasting the state's $730 million bond sale for a new four-lane highway from Mobile to Tuscaloosa, calling it "the biggest abuse of taxpayer funding in Alabama history." He suggests expanding I-65 instead. Sounds like a serious road fight!

Healthcare Clash: Britt vs. Sewell!

Senator Katie Britt is slamming Democrats' Obamacare extension plan as "political theater," while Congresswoman Terri Sewell is warning of coverage losses for Alabamians. The Senate failed to pass the GOP bill for HSA deposits. Britt fears premium spikes, while Sewell points to Republicans' failure causing roughly 130,000 Alabamians to lose health care coverage. Heroes Emerge from Alabama Crash

A tragic car accident in Morgan County, Alabama, took a heartbreaking turn Sunday night, but a glimmer of hope shone through thanks to the quick thinking of two strangers. A young couple pulled a 7-month-old baby from a burning car, saving the infant's life.

A Deadly Wreck Turned Miraculous

The accident occurred when 29-year-old Kayleigh Page tragically veered off Alabama 157 and struck two trees. Sadly, Page did not survive the crash. But little LJ, in the back seat, had angels watching over him in the form of Zoie Campbell, 21, and her boyfriend, Samuel Brooks, 25.

Act of Bravery Amidst Flames

Sheriff Ron Puckett reported that deputies arrived to find the baby already safe, rescued from the burning Tesla. He wholeheartedly praised the couple, stating, “You saved a child," emphasizing the lasting impact on the baby's father and family.

Electric Vehicle Fire Danger

First responders emphasized the extreme danger involved. Electric vehicle fires burn intensely and release hazardous gases, making them exceptionally perilous. Decatur Fire and Rescue's Brandon Sivley described the intensity as "normal fire, you know, times 100." Zoie and Samuel didn't hesitate.

Beyond the Rescue

Sheriff Puckett expressed immense gratitude for their heroism and encouraged others to help when it's safe. Amazingly, the night of the crash was only the couple's second date! Their third date? Continuing to support the family by collecting breast milk donations for baby LJ. Thankfully, officials reported LJ is expected to make a full recovery.
