Walmart Fire Case Takes a Turn!

Big news coming out of Homewood! Federal prosecutors are cracking down on the Walmart fire on Lakeshore Parkway, and two Birmingham residents are now facing some serious charges! Buckle up, ChumCity, this story has some twists and turns.

Who's Involved?

Lillian Jayne Colburn, 26, and Mercutio Terrell Southall, 41, have been indicted for allegedly setting the fire inside the Homewood Walmart Supercenter. We're talking arson and, get this, conspiring to provide material support to terrorists! Talk about an escalation!

The Timeline

Remember that fire back in August 2025? It all went down on August 25th at the Lakeshore Parkway Walmart. The FBI, Homewood PD, and Irondale PD teamed up to investigate. Looks like their hard work is paying off!

What Happened?

Picture this: a shopping cart crammed with rags, blankets, charcoal, fuel, and paint thinner, deliberately set ablaze in the clothing aisle. Chaos ensued! The store had to evacuate, costing Walmart over $130,000 in damages. Yikes!

The Investigation Heats Up

Detectives fingered Mercutio Southall early on after spotting him at a protest and then inside the store, allegedly gathering the materials for the fire. Police say he dipped out, then came back to spark the blaze. He was quickly arrested and held without bond.

A Second Suspect Emerges!

The investigation didn't stop there. Detectives kept digging, and their work led them to Lillian Jayne Colburn! She wasn't named initially, but now she's facing federal charges alongside Southall for her alleged role in planning and carrying out the arson.

What's Next?

This federal indictment officially charges Colburn and Southall, moving the case to federal court. It's important to remember that an indictment is just an accusation, and both defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Flags Lowered to Honor Ann Bedsole, Alabama Icon

Flags across Alabama, including right here in Mobile County, are flying at half-mast today, Friday, in remembrance of the remarkable Ann Bedsole, who passed away on December 1st at the grand age of 95.

Remembering Ann

A service celebrating her life will be held this Friday, December 5th, at 2 p.m. at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church in Mobile, with visitation to follow.

A Life of Many Facets

Despite the cloudy skies, a large gathering is expected, reflecting the diverse impact Ann had on Alabama. Expect to see:

  • Political figures recognizing Ann as a trailblazer—the first Republican woman in both the State House and Senate!
  • Educators, parents, and former students, celebrating her vision in founding the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, a beacon for gifted students.
  • Business leaders acknowledging her entrepreneurial success in forestry, property, and more.
  • Members of the caring community, grateful for her dedication to the Sybil Smith Village, a sanctuary for the homeless named in honor of her mother.

Leaving a Footprint

Ann Bedsole, who shared her inspiring life story in her 2022 book, “Leave Your Footprint,” certainly left many footprints of her own and encouraged others to do the same.

Beyond Politics

While her bids for Governor in 1994 and Mayor of Mobile in 2005 didn't end in victory, she remained a force. And she was rightfully inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor in 2002.

College Football's Gone Wild - Even Herbie's Worried!

Okay, college football fans, are you dizzy yet? Between NIL deals and conference chaos, it's like the sport did a face-plant into a pile of cash and confusion. Even Kirk Herbstreit's looking a little shell-shocked!

Is Strength of Schedule Dead?

Remember college football from, like, five minutes ago? Yeah, this ain't it. The College Football Playoff committee is getting blasted for seemingly ignoring strength of schedule, favoring simple win-loss records. The result? Teams might ditch tough non-conference games faster than you can say "cupcake."

Longhorns Burned?

Look at Texas. A solid 9-3, but probably no playoff bid because of those SEC losses after a tough loss to Ohio State. If they'd scheduled a cream puff instead, they'd be chilling at 10-2, playoff bound. Ouch!

Bama's Dodgy Scheduling

Alabama swapped a game against South Florida (a top non-Power Four program) for...Chattanooga. Seriously? Herbstreit himself called it out on social media, warning that this is just the beginning of a disturbing trend.

Herbstreit's Dire Warning

"Get ready to see this happen all over the sport," Herbstreit tweeted, hinting at the death of meaningful non-conference games. Cupcakes galore!

The Cupcake Apocalypse

Herbie's probably right. Teams are desperate to please a playoff committee that changes its mind more often than the weather. Sure, more conference games might be cool, but prepare for an onslaught of pointless matchups.

Fans Paying the Price, Again

It's just another consequence of the directionless state of college football, and as always, the fans are getting hosed. Get ready for more yawns!

Bizarre Birmingham Case Closed: Dog's Discovery Leads to Homicide ID

Remember those human bones turning up in a Birmingham neighborhood? The Jefferson County Coroner's Office has officially identified them as belonging to 25-year-old Curtis Taylor Jr. of Center Point. Yellowhammer News covered the initial findings, but now we know the tragic truth: it's been ruled a homicide due to a gunshot wound.

How It Started: A Dog's Grim Find

Back in August 2024, a local pooch brought a human skull home – yikes! Authorities searched the area, but nothing else turned up. DNA tests were a dead end. Fast forward nearly four months, and the same dog pulls another shocker: a long bone identified as Taylor’s tibia.

The Dog Detective & the Missing Person

Investigators even put a GPS tracker on the dog (smart!), hoping it would lead them to more clues. According to ABC 33/40, Taylor was reported missing in February 2024. His family lived right across the street from where the dog kept finding the remains! Chilling, right?

Trained K-9s Join the Search

Further searches, this time with trained K-9 units, eventually located Taylor in a wooded area behind his home. More skeletal remains continued to surface, some on property connected to his family.

Homicide Confirmed, Investigation Ongoing

The coroner's office confirmed that all the remains were Taylor's and that he died from a gunshot wound. This case is now a full-blown homicide investigation. Law enforcement is still digging for answers, so if you know anything, contact the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Let's help bring justice for Curtis Taylor Jr.

Athens Teen Indicted on Terrorism Charges

An Athens teen, already in custody for making online threats, has now been formally indicted on multiple Class A felony charges. Investigators say he conspired with extremist online groups, specifically targeting police officers who work as school resource officers at Athens High School.

Grand Jury Indictment Details

According to a Limestone County Grand Jury indictment, 18-year-old Carson Albert Butler is facing serious charges. The five-count indictment includes allegations of terrorism, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder.

Allegations of Planned Violence

The indictment accuses Butler of plotting actions intended to intimidate or coerce. He allegedly attempted to cause the death of multiple individuals, including students, faculty, and staff at Athens High School. A judge has ordered him held without bond.

Targets Identified as School Resource Officers

Authorities have confirmed that the eleven individuals named as targets in the indictment are school resource officers. One count alleges Butler attempted to intentionally cause their deaths, while another focuses on alleged attempts to kill members of the school community.

Links to Extremist Groups

The indictment also identifies several groups and online aliases the teen allegedly used during the planning stages. These include groups with names like "764," "No Lives Matter" (NLM), and individuals using online names like "antichrist." These groups are reportedly associated with violent extremist rhetoric, neo-Nazi accelerationist ideology, and in some cases, other criminal activity.

Previous Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Butler has been in custody since June, when Athens Police say he posted an online threat targeting Athens High School. Investigators notified the school system, and security was increased at summer events. Authorities identified Butler, a former student, as the suspect with assistance from the FBI.

Statement from Athens City Schools

Athens City Schools released a statement assuring the community that the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff remain their highest priority. They emphasized that the individual is in custody, and there is no active or ongoing threat. They expressed gratitude to law enforcement partners and noted that the legal matter is active and ongoing.

Attorney General Marshall Stands Up for Parental Rights...Again!

Alabama's Attorney General Steve Marshall is back in the ring, fighting for parents who want to shield their kids from radical transgender policies. This time, he's taking on a Colorado school district!

What's the Fuss?

Marshall, also eyeing a U.S. Senate seat in '26, has joined a legal challenge against a Jefferson County, Colorado, school policy. This policy allows students to room together on field trips and share sporting facilities based on their self-proclaimed gender identity, not their biological sex. A group of parents sued, but a federal court tossed their case.

A 21-State Power Move

Marshall's not alone! He's part of a 21-state coalition backing the parents' appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. This is a big deal.

Marshall's Strong Words

"The Constitution doesn't force parents to sit back while schools shove gender ideology down their throats, forcing daughters to share spaces with boys," Marshall declared. "Our kids deserve better than this!"

Legal Arguments Heating Up

The brief slams the lower court for treating the Christian parents as second-class citizens, denying them a fair shot at discovery. They argue the school district's policy relies on outdated medical info already debunked by Alabama in past court battles.

A Champion for Children

Marshall's been a leading voice in protecting kids from irreversible sex-change procedures, successfully defending Alabama's law. Remember the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act? He helped clear the way for that!

Who's Joining the Fight?

The Attorneys General from Florida, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming are standing alongside Marshall. Even the Arizona state legislature is in the mix!

Alabama Democrats Eye Upset in Deep Red District?

Could Alabama's Democratic Party be plotting a surprise victory in a staunchly Republican stronghold? Tabitha Isner, Vice Chair of the state party, is actively seeking a candidate to challenge for the District 47 State House seat, currently held by Rep. Mike Shaw (R-Hoover).

A Glimmer of Hope?

Isner took to Facebook, stating, "Looking for a Democrat to step up in District 47! This district spans Vestavia Hills to Hoover and is currently held by Republican Rep. Mike Shaw." She highlighted that Harris secured 41% of the vote in the district during the 2024 election. "If the 10 point shift to the Left continues, this seat can be won by a Democrat! Please talk to anyone you know in the area and help us identify a candidate!"

Uphill Battle Ahead

Shaw's 2022 victory saw him capture 64% of the vote, and President Trump dominated Alabama in 2024, snagging almost 65% of the statewide vote. Isner's optimism raises eyebrows, considering the significant Republican advantage. Can a Democrat pull off the upset? Only time will tell!

SEC Championship Showdown: Tide vs. Dawgs, Round 2!

Get ready, ChumCity! The Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs are locking horns again this Saturday in Atlanta for SEC supremacy. It's a rematch, folks!

Remember Athens?

Earlier this season, Bama stormed into Athens and snagged a win, pushing Kirby Smart's record against the Tide to a not-so-pretty 1-7. But that was then!

Fresh Start, High Stakes

Both squads are different beasts now. That first game? Ancient history! While not quite as crucial as that unforgettable SEC Championship two years back, there's still plenty on the line.

Playoff Implications

Think playoff seeding and a sweet, sweet first-round bye. Both teams are banged up and could seriously use the extra rest!

Injury Report

Alabama's hurting, missing key guys like RB Jam Miller, TE Josh Cuevas, and DL LT Overton. Georgia's without center Drew Bobo and RB Bo Walker, with others questionable. Ouch!

QB Watch

Ty Simpson, Bama's QB, has cooled off lately. Meanwhile, Georgia's defense is looking meaner than ever. They're hungry for some Crimson Tide blood!

DeBoer's Biggest Test?

This might be Kalen DeBoer's toughest challenge yet as Alabama's coach. Win, and it's an 11-win season and an SEC title! Lose, and things get dicey on Selection Sunday, maybe even a road playoff game.

Epic Rivalry Continues

Buckle up, ChumCity! This is gonna be another legendary chapter in the Alabama-Georgia saga.
