Holiday Hustle: Scammers are Out in Force!

Think your holiday shopping list is the only thing expanding this season? Think again! Scammers are working overtime, turning the gift-giving frenzy into a fraud bonanza. From bogus shipping alerts to deals that seem too good to be real, criminals are using holiday chaos to snatch your cash and personal info.

Non-Delivery Nightmares

Fraudsters are masters of disguise, using fake package deliveries to swindle you. We call it the non-delivery scam, and it's big business for them. Last year alone, these scams cost American consumers a whopping $785 million, according to the FBI. And credit card fraud added another $200 million to the pile.

Be Fraud Aware!

"Fraudsters will continue to use these tactics, so it pays for everyone to be fraud aware," says Jeff Taylor, a fraud expert. "From fake websites and 'too good to be true' offers to porch pirates, fraud and theft during the holiday season will peak over the next few weeks."

What to Watch Out For:

The FBI says scammers use the holiday season's confusion to their advantage. Here's what to look out for:

  • Unsolicited Messages: Texts, emails, or social media messages about a delivery problem you don't remember? Red flag!
  • Urgency: "Act now!" Scammers thrive on panic.
  • Suspicious Links: Emails or texts with links leading to fake websites designed to steal your data.
  • Too-Good-to-Be-True Prices: That perfect gift at an unbelievably low price? Proceed with extreme caution.
  • Funky Websites: Bad spelling, grammar, typos... Trust your gut!

FBI's 7 Tips to Stay Safe:

  1. Avoid clicking suspicious links or attachments.
  2. Be wary of requests to update passwords or account info.
  3. Double-check website URLs. Look for "https://" and a locked padlock icon.
  4. Inspect gift cards for tampering before you buy.
  5. Be cautious of online transactions using wire transfers, virtual currency, gift cards, or cash.
  6. Never wire money directly to a seller. Be suspicious of payment requests using pre-paid gift cards.
  7. Always get tracking numbers for online purchases.

Stay Alert & Stay Safe!

"Protecting yourself from non-delivery scams starts with skepticism and smart checks," advises Kimberly Reece, a financial crimes expert. "Don’t click on unverified links and remember that if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is."

If you think you've been scammed, report it to the FBI immediately!

Trump's Response (or Lack Thereof)

The passing of Rob Reiner, known for his vocal critiques of President Trump, presented a moment where silence or sympathy would have been appropriate.

Trump Being Trump

But, alas, Trump is Trump, right? He seems compelled to react in ways that many find... well, Trump-like.

A Simple Rule

It's a sad fact that some struggle with the age-old advice: if you can't say something nice after someone dies, maybe just don't say anything at all.

McKinley's Visit to Tuskegee: A Blast from the Past!

Ever heard about President William McKinley hanging out in Alabama? Bet you didn't know it happened 127 years ago today, back on December 16, 1898!

A Presidential Pit Stop

Republican President McKinley himself rolled into Tuskegee Institute, all thanks to an invite from the school's main man, Booker T. Washington. Talk about a power move!

All Aboard the McKinley Express!

The Prez didn't roll solo. Special trains chugged in from Atlanta loaded with his fam, cabinet members, and even General Joseph Wheeler, a former Confederate general from Alabama! History's a trip, right?

Tuskegee Rolls Out the Red Carpet

Tuskegee Institute went all out, welcoming McKinley with open arms (and a massive crowd of over 6,000 people!). Even Gov. Joseph Johnston and the whole Alabama Legislature showed up. It was the event of the year!

Seeds of Good Citizenship

McKinley took a tour, watched a parade, and then dropped some wisdom in the school's chapel. He praised the college's lasting impact and how it was planting the "seeds of good citizenship." Pretty inspiring stuff!

Where'd We Hear This Wild Tale?

We snagged this juicy bit of Alabama history from The Art of Alabama Politics, where they dish out the wild, weird, and wonderful stories of our state's political past.

Yellowhammer State to Honor Charlie Kirk with Scholarship

Alabama State Senator Gerald Allen has announced a brand-new scholarship for Yellowhammer State students, all in the name of conservative icon Charlie Kirk.

Remembering a Leader

Senator Allen, representing Tuscaloosa, revealed the Charlie Kirk Memorial Endowed Scholarship at The University of Alabama this week. The scholarship serves as a lasting memorial to Kirk.

Kirk's Legacy

Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was renowned for sparking lively political discussions on college campuses.

Investing in the Future

“Charlie Kirk stood for perseverance, leadership, and the ideal of serving something bigger than oneself,” Allen stated. “By establishing this scholarship at The University of Alabama, we honor his legacy and invest in the next generation of leaders from our state who will carry forward those same values.”

Scholarship Details

Administered by The University of Alabama National Alumni Association, the Charlie Kirk Memorial Endowed Scholarship will offer annual financial support to incoming or continuing undergraduates.

More Than Just Money

Senator Allen emphasized the importance of education, civic engagement, and robust debate for young Alabamians. The scholarship aims to assist students who embody Kirk’s character and ambition.

A Patriot's Passion

“Charlie Kirk was an American patriot whose passion for faith and freedom inspired a generation,” Allen said. “He dedicated his life to helping young Americans rediscover that faith in God, liberty, and hard work is what makes our nation great.”

Who Can Apply?

Priority will be given to full-time freshmen or current undergrads from Tuscaloosa County who demonstrate leadership, strong moral character, civic involvement, or public service, along with financial need. An essay is required as part of the application.

Encouraging Debate

“Alabama holds the values of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution very dear, and The University of Alabama has a proud tradition of encouraging civil, intellectual and spirited political debate,” Allen continued. “It’s an honor to help a student do that in Charlie’s name.”

A Lasting Tribute

Senator Allen hopes the scholarship will honor Kirk's legacy and inspire future leaders.

Never Forgotten

“By God’s grace, Charlie will never be forgotten, and through this scholarship, his life’s work will continue through the students who rise up to lead with the same moral courage, conviction and love of God and country that defined his life,” Allen concluded.

Remembering Ella Cook

Our hearts are heavy as we share the news of Ella Cobbs Cook's passing. Born on July 18, 2006, in Birmingham, Alabama, Ella's vibrant life was tragically cut short on December 13, 2025, while a student at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Ella was the cherished daughter of Anna Bishop Cook and Richard Poellnitz Cook, and a beloved sister to Richard Hooker Poellnitz Cook and Mary Hamner Cook. She leaves behind a loving family including grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friend, Sandra McCollum.

A Life Full of Light

Ella was a sophomore at Brown, pursuing her passion for French and Mathematics-Economics. A graduate of Mountain Brook High School, she was a lifelong, active member of the Cathedral Church of the Advent (Episcopal) in Birmingham.

Ella's interests were vast and varied. She treasured time with her friends, adored babysitting, and found joy in teaching Bible studies, Sunday School, and academic subjects. Her love for children was profound, and she dreamed of having a family of her own one day. She also enjoyed piano, dance, spending time outdoors, and traveling – especially to French-speaking destinations!

A Heart That Shined

Ella’s Christian faith was the cornerstone of her life, her belief in the Death and Resurrection of Christ radiated from within. She shared the grace she found with genuine love and saw the best in everyone. Though quiet in demeanor, she possessed a "silent leadership," inspiring those around her. Her sister Mary Hamner remembers her as "the best big sister ever: protective, responsible, and selfless.”

A Lasting Impact

From Birmingham to Providence, Ella built a circle of devoted friends, drawn to her genuine care for others. Her sudden passing has inspired profound gratitude in all who knew her. Ella possessed a quiet magic, evident in her smile, her openness to new experiences, her unwavering faith, and her constant encouragement of others.

Ella lit up our world, and her light will forever shine in the hearts of her family and friends.

"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:38-39

A Celebration of Life

We will remember Ella and celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord on December 22nd at the Cathedral Church of the Advent. Time is still to be determined. We invite everyone to wear Easter colors.

Donations in Ella's memory can be made to the Children's Ministry at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, 2017 Sixth Avenue North, Birmingham AL 35203.

Moody HS Football Team Gets Smoked by AHSAA

Looks like the celebration after Moody High School's Class 5A state championship win against Vigor has gone up in smoke. The team's victory party, held December 4th in Birmingham, included some "flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct" that's landed them in hot water.

What Went Down?

Apparently, post-game locker room pics surfaced online showing players (who are minors, mind you) puffing on cigars. To add fuel to the fire, the team's now-deleted social media account posted a picture with a cheeky caption about sending the bill for the celebration to the City of Moody. Whoops!

The Penalty Box

The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) didn't find it so funny. As a result, four assistant coaches and ten players are benched for the 2026 spring or fall jamboree and the first regular-season game.

More Than Just a Time Out

The punishment doesn't stop there! If players or coaches jump ship and transfer, they'll have to serve their suspension at their new school. Seniors who are graduating are being slapped with a $250 fine. Plus, Moody High is on the hook for any damages to the Protective Stadium dressing room. Ouch!

School's Take

St. Clair superintendent Rusty St. John issued a statement, saying, "Winning a state championship is historic... However, certain actions... have unfortunately dampened the celebration. We do not condone the improper conduct... and we apologize..."

Bottom Line

A state championship victory turned sour. Let this be a lesson: celebrate responsibly, ChumCity!

Saban's New Game: From Sideline to Ice Rink!

Nick Saban promised he wouldn't be idle in retirement, and boy, was he serious! The legendary former Alabama coach is making a splash in the world of... hockey?!

A Predatory Move

That's right, Saban is trading touchdowns for slapshots, announcing a minority stake purchase in the Nashville Predators! He's joining forces with his longtime automobile business partner, Joe Agresti, through their Dream Sports Ventures LLC.

"A Competitive Nature"

Saban himself stated, "Although I am now retired as a coach, I still possess a competitive nature and a great passion for sports.” He added that getting involved with a Nashville sports team was a long-time goal, making the Predators a perfect fit.

Championship Dreams

Predators majority owner, Bill Haslam, is just as thrilled. He calls Saban "one of the all-time greats" and hopes his winning aura will help bring a Stanley Cup to Nashville. The Predators haven't snagged a title since joining the league in '98, though they came close in 2016.

From Cars to Cups?

Saban and Agresti, already a powerhouse duo in the auto industry, are now aiming to conquer the ice. Can Saban's magic touch translate from the gridiron to the rink? Nashville fans are certainly hoping so!

A Word to Parents
