Sylacauga's Own Bishop Spencer Faces New Challenges

Richard "Dick" Spencer, a Sylacauga native and Bishop of the U.S. Military Diocese, is currently at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. This extraordinary man, who oversees 617 military chaplains across 171 countries, is bravely battling Parkinson's Disease and prostate cancer.

Connecting with His Classmates

In a heartfelt message shared with his Sylacauga High Class of '69 via email and Facebook, Bishop Spencer revealed his current health struggles. Always an active member of his class, he extended spiritual support to anyone else navigating a similar healing journey.

Ministry Continues Despite Health

Despite undergoing treatment, Bishop Spencer hopes to return to Atlanta in early February to launch his personal ministry, "Repair and Restore." Inspired by his own challenges, his mission is to "inspire and influence with love, hope, understanding, compassion, and a positive persistent attitude."

Serving Still

Even amidst personal health concerns, Bishop Spencer remains dedicated to ministering to others, both in the U.S. military and back in Alabama. He has offered comfort to grieving families and prayers to those battling illness and life's hardships.

From Altar Boy to Bishop

Bishop Spencer's journey from an altar boy at St. Jude Catholic Church in Sylacauga to a high-ranking bishop is a remarkable Alabama story. From Jacksonville State University to a career as a military policeman and chaplain, he dedicated himself to serving others.

Returning Home

Though headquartered in Germany and now back in Atlanta, Bishop Spencer hasn't forgotten his roots. He's returned home often, even conducting Mass at St. Jude, where he was greeted by his classmates. Now, that class is returning the support to a man who has always been there for them. We wish Bishop Richard Spencer strength and a swift recovery!

Birmingham Tackles Vacant Properties: Mayor Calls for Accountability!

Mayor Randall Woodfin is stepping up to bat for Birmingham neighborhoods! He's asking state lawmakers for some extra muscle to tackle the city's long-standing issues with vacant and tax-delinquent properties. His message? Accountability, accountability, accountability!

The Problem: Empty Lots and Absentee Owners

Like many older cities, Birmingham's been dealing with population loss. This has left a growing number of properties sitting empty or with unpaid taxes. City officials say this slows down progress and costs the city big time in maintenance and public safety.

The Solution: More Tools for the City

Right now, city leaders say the state's property laws don't give them enough power to deal with absentee owners and fix up neighborhoods. Woodfin wants to change that!

Woodfin's Plea: Shared Responsibility

The Mayor isn't trying to grab anyone's land. He just wants owners to step up and maintain their properties or tear down those that are falling apart.

A Real-Life Example

Imagine your house, says Woodfin. On one side, a lot with overgrown weeds. On the other, an abandoned house. Both owned by someone who doesn't even live in the state! The city just wants them to do their part.

The Big Picture: Thousands of Properties

This isn't a small issue. Birmingham has over 15,000 tax-delinquent properties! This puts a strain on residents and city resources.

Hopeful for Progress

Woodfin says early talks with lawmakers are encouraging. He emphasizes that the city's request is all about shared responsibility. "You have a simple expectation when you walk out of your door: take care of your own property, and your neighbor’s going to take care of theirs. And that is literally all this is about."

Affordability: More Than Just a Buzzword in Sweet Home Alabama

Affordability. It's tossed around a lot, but here in Alabama, it's a real-life challenge for families, seniors, and businesses. And the secret sauce? Stability: rock-solid communities, dependable jobs, and reliable energy.

Energy: Alabama's Economic Engine

Think of energy as more than just power lines. It's the heart of our state's economy! It lures in industries, creates jobs, boosts rural areas, and fuels every sector. When our energy systems are pumping, Alabama thrives. When they're struggling, everything gets pricier.

For years, Alabama's energy providers – PowerSouth, TVA, Alabama Power, co-ops, and municipal systems – have been investing in reliability, diversity, and smart planning. This has shielded us from the chaos and price spikes seen in other states that jumped headfirst into politically driven energy policies. Our balanced approach? It's our competitive edge.

State Leaders Stepping Up

Recently, our state leaders have become key players in strengthening this foundation with some major, forward-thinking moves. Remember The Game Plan in 2023 to boost economic incentives? Then came Working for Alabama in 2024, a landmark workforce development plan. But the real game-changer for long-term affordability? The 2025 Powering Growth package.

Powering Growth: Partnership, Modernization, and Economic Expansion

This isn't about red tape. It's about collaboration, modernization, and positioning Alabama for major growth. Powering Growth aims to slash borrowing costs for big energy projects, ultimately lowering energy expenses. It also speeds up the approval process for using highway rights-of-way, letting utilities expand electric, fiber, and gas infrastructure faster and more efficiently. Faster projects, better connectivity, and stronger support for rural and industrial development? Yes, please!

Real Impact, Real Growth

These aren't just fancy words. They attract new businesses, bolster advanced manufacturing, create well-paying jobs, and prep communities for the future. Alabama becomes more competitive today and even more prepared for tomorrow.

A Federal Nod of Approval

This state-led partnership even aligns with federal efforts like President Trump's "Speed to Power" initiative. Governor Ivey, Speaker Ledbetter, Pro Tem Gudger, and the Energy Institute of Alabama are urging the U.S. Department of Energy to study Alabama's Powering Growth model as a prime example of state and federal collaboration.

Senator Britt's Dedication

Leaders like U.S. Senator Katie Britt are also on board, showing dedication to supporting Alabamians. Politics aside, everyone agrees that thoughtful, long-term solutions are essential for communities, businesses, and our economic edge.

Keeping Alabama Strong

As the energy world changes, Alabama needs to stick with what works: balanced planning, reliable service, and policies that support, not hinder, economic growth. That's how we ensure affordability, protect our competitiveness, and keep Alabama one of the strongest states in the Southeast.

Not a Partisan Issue, a People Issue

Affordability isn't about politics; it's about people. And protecting it means protecting the energy backbone and the economic engine that keeps Alabama strong.

Montgomery Rumor Mill: Indictments Edition?

Heard the buzz about potential indictments rocking the Alabama State House? State Senator Arthur Orr's calling "BS" (well, sort of).

During a chat with "The Dale Jackson Show," Orr (R-Decatur) tackled the swirling rumors head-on, acknowledging the whispers about a grand jury possibly dropping indictments on legislators. But? He hasn't seen a shred of proof.

"Just a Rumor," Says Orr

"Yeah, it’s a rumor," Orr stated plainly. "I hadn’t seen any tangible evidence of it.” Sounds like someone's heard this tune before.

Bud's Bar: Ground Zero for Gossip?

Orr hinted that the speculation could be just Montgomery's special blend of political gossip, brewed in the town's lobbying circles. Imagine lobbyists scribbling conspiracy theories on napkins at Bud's... wild!

The Shoe That Never Drops

Orr said these kinds of rumors pop up all the time, promising scandal and intrigue, only to vanish into thin air. "I’ve heard it before where ‘some shoe is going to drop," he said. "And nobody ever sees the shoe, much less watches it drop.” Dramatic, right?

Skepticism is Key

While Orr was careful not to completely dismiss the possibility, he emphasized his skepticism, noting that he's heard these types of claims before and nothing ever comes of them. "I've heard them before, and I’m very skeptical.”

Open Skepticism

Jackson pointed out that Orr was the first person to openly downplay the rumors.

Tensions Run High

Orr didn't deny investigations can happen, but he said that rumors can snowball in Montgomery, especially during legislative sessions.

As it stands, no indictments have been announced, prosecutors haven't commented, and no real evidence has emerged. Chalk it up to another day in the Alabama State House?

Big Rigs Rollin' with Chen!

The Alabama Trucking Association's political arm, TRUK PAC, is throwin' its weight behind Derek Chen for Alabama State Auditor!

Why the Trucking Love?

TRUK PAC Chairman Greg Brown says Chen's the real deal: "Integrity, detail, and a dedication to public service make him the right choice. He's all about transparency and takin' care of Alabama's citizens!"

TRUK PAC backs folks who get how important a solid transportation system is, along with smart money management and rules that let Alabama's truckers do their thing safely and efficiently.

Chen's on Board!

"Trucking's the heart of Alabama's economy, and I'm ready to jump in and help the industry thrive," Chen said. "I appreciate ATA's support and look forward to workin' with them."

He knows a strong trucking industry needs good roads, responsible spending, and a state government that's clear and gets the job done.

Accountabilty is Key

“As State Auditor, my focus is on accountability and efficiency," Chen added. "When government works right, industries like trucking can really shine: keepin' Alabama movin'!"

This endorsement is a win for Chen's campaign, showing he's got the backing of industry leaders and folks all over the state.

Tigers Roar: Auburn Upsets Defending Champs!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity! The Auburn Tigers, after a bumpy start to SEC play under new coach Steven Pearl, just snagged a HUGE road win against the defending national champion Florida Gators!

Auburn clawed their way to a 15-point halftime lead and held on tight, securing a 76-67 victory. This puts them at 4-3 in the SEC, keeping them right in the thick of things.

Standout Performances

UCF transfer Keyshawn Hall went OFF on offense, dropping 24 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and dishing out four assists, with a couple of steals to boot! KeShawn Murphy, the Mississippi State transfer, had a day of his own with 16 points and nine rebounds. Tahaad Pettiford chipped in with 11 points and five assists too.

Pearl's Take

Coach Pearl acknowledged the significance of the win for a Tigers squad that’s loaded with talent but still finding its groove – just like him as a head coach!

"Our team three weeks ago would not have won this game," Pearl said after the game. "That just speaks to our growth as a team, our growth as a staff, and our kids willingness to stick together and really lock into the details of the things that we have been harping on every single day in practice and we’ve just continuously gotten better as a group."

Looking Ahead

"For us, it’s about what we do from here. While we beat probably the best team in our league on the road…we can’t let this get us too high. If we let this thing affect us in a way that can distract us from the next one then it really doesn’t mean anything."

Auburn’s back home this week, facing off against Texas at Neville Arena on Wednesday night. Don’t miss it!
