Tuberville on the Lottery: No Gimmicks!

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville dropped some truth about the lottery. Asked his stance, he delivered a gem: "Sure, do it, BUT know we need real growth in this state, not gimmicks."

Real Growth vs. Quick Fixes

Tuberville seems cool with letting Alabama voters decide on a lottery. However, he's laser-focused on serious economic development, implying that a lottery win isn't the jackpot our state truly needs.

Dale Jackson's Take

Dale Jackson, the brains behind Yellowhammer News and host of the 5-9 a.m. talk show on WVNN, is definitely someone to watch for Alabama insights!

Dark Money Group Targets Blue Cross, Champions Jackson Hospital

A mysterious, Delaware-based group, Alabama Patients First, is making waves in Alabama with a new TV ad campaign. Just after a coordinated legal offensive against Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, this group popped up and is now openly stating its agenda.

Ads Focus on Montgomery's Struggling Jackson Hospital

For weeks, Montgomery has been bombarded with attack ads against Blue Cross. Now, Alabama Patients First is centering its message around Jackson Hospital, a Montgomery hospital facing potential closure after declaring bankruptcy in 2024.

The ad claims, "Jackson Hospital has been a staple in Montgomery for decades, but today they’re fighting to stay alive… Blue Cross pays Jackson hospital significantly less than neighboring hospitals for the same life saving care, ripping off Jackson hospital to the tune of millions in revenue they need to survive… Tell Blue Cross pay equal rates save Jackson Hospital."

Big Spending on Ad Campaign

Alabama Patients First is investing heavily to spread its message, spending a total of $475,535 across Alabama media markets, with a significant $373,535 focused solely on Montgomery's TV market.

The group has purchased additional TV slots, recognizing that the Alabama Legislature reconvenes in Montgomery on Tuesday.

Blue Cross Responds to "Improper Attempt"

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama calls this blitz "an improper attempt" by Jackson Hospital's "investor-lender to improperly influence litigation."

Court Battles and Financial Support

Jackson filed a complaint against BCBS, requesting the court compel equal reimbursement rates to those paid to Baptist Medical Center in Montgomery. The court has extended Jackson's time to file a Chapter 11 plan through January 30, 2026, and to solicit votes through April 1, 2026.

The court authorized Jackson to use governmental grant funds, but with restrictions, preventing them from repaying debts incurred prior to November 1, 2025.

Taxpayer Money Involved

While Jackson battles BCBS in court, and Alabama Patients First influences officials, taxpayer money continues to flow. The Montgomery County Commission approved an additional $7.5 million for Jackson, adding to prior commitments.

Jackson’s debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing is tied to Jackson Investment Group, totaling up to $35 million with high interest rates and fees. The leverage of their financing increases each week the hospital remains open.

Tide Turning? DeBoer Revamps Bama After Rose Bowl Letdown

The Crimson Tide's season ended on a sour note – a Rose Bowl beatdown courtesy of Indiana. But fear not, ChumCity citizens! Kalen DeBoer isn't letting the dust settle. The transfer portal is buzzing, and Bama's roster is about to get a serious makeover.

Transfer Portal: Out With the Old, In With the New

Yeah, we saw some guys head for the exit, and sure, that raised some eyebrows. But DeBoer's been busy! He's already snagged five transfers, and rumor has it, more are on the way!

New Faces in Tuscaloosa

First up, Oklahoma State tight end Josh Ford is heading to Tuscaloosa. With Josh Cuevas NFL-bound, Ford could step right in and make an impact! DeBoer didn't stop there, folks. Virginia Tech linebacker Caleb Woodson is joining the defense, plugging a key hole. And rounding out the D, USC defensive lineman Devan Thompkins, a top-rated portal prize, has committed to the Tide. These guys are here to play now.

Revamping the Run Game

Defense is key, but the ground game is where the real change may lie. North Carolina State running back Hollywood Smothers could become the top back immediately. Adding some beef up front, Michigan interior offensive lineman Kaden Strayhorn is coming to lay some serious groundwork! He's another potential day-one starter.

The Pursuit Continues

Alabama's not done yet! They're chasing some serious talent, including former Auburn receiver Cam Coleman and Smothers' NC State teammate, left tackle Jacarrius Peak. Clearly, DeBoer and his staff are determined to erase the memory of that Rose Bowl. Get ready for a new-look Tide!

Remembering Howard Sanderford: A Huntsville Statesman

Folks in the Alabama House are mourning the loss of former State Rep. Howard Sanderford, who passed away Wednesday in Huntsville at the age of 90. He'd previously announced his retirement from a seventh term back in 2022.

Sanderford was known for his kindness and ability to listen – a true gentleman of the legislature. He always had time for citizens and fellow politicians, even when they disagreed. He was also a longtime participant in the weekly prayer breakfast hosted by ALCAP.

Representing Huntsville

Representing District 20, which covers much of Southeast Huntsville, Sanderford brought his background to bear. Born in Meridian, Mississippi, and a graduate of Mississippi State in accounting, he also proudly served in the U.S. Marines. Semper Fi!

From IBM to leading Computer Leasing Company, Inc., Sanderford's business acumen was clear. And, as a Huntsville representative, aerospace held a special place. He served on the Alabama Commission on Aerospace Sciences and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center Commission.

Tributes Pour In

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center shared their condolences, noting his 33 years in the legislature and his dedication to programs like SALSA, which provides Space Camp scholarships. His generosity extended to teacher scholarships as well.

State Rep. James Lomax, who now holds Sanderford's seat, remembered him as a "statesman" with deep dedication. Public Service Commissioner Jeremy Oden echoed that sentiment, calling Sanderford "one of the best individuals" to serve Alabama.

A Political Standout

Sanderford's 2010 election victory was a highlight, winning 57% of the vote against tough opposition.

Arrangements are pending.

Alabama Courts New Business in South Korea!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity! Alabama's making some serious moves to snag even more international business. Representatives from the state's economic development team just wrapped up a whirlwind visit, prepping for their new gig in Seoul, South Korea!

Meet the Team: Blakeley & Choo

Sean Blakeley and Carol Yelim Choo are leading the charge, heading up Alabama's brand-spankin'-new foreign business development office in Seoul. Think of them as Alabama's ambassadors of commerce!

Why Seoul?

Alabama's Commerce Department is serious about strengthening ties in key global markets. This new office, along with another in Tokyo, is all about raising Alabama's profile and building on already strong relationships in South Korea and Japan.

Seeing is Believing

During their visit, Blakeley and Choo hit the ground running, touring hotspots in Mobile, Montgomery, Opelika, and Chambers County. They got a taste of Alabama's potential, from the Port of Mobile to Hyundai's auto plant.

What They Said

"This was an excellent opportunity for us to really understand the Alabama offering and meet the talented people," Blakeley said. Choo added that with Korean investment on the rise, Alabama's perfectly positioned to attract investors in sectors like defense, shipbuilding, and biotech!

Diversifying the Portfolio

Alabama's already scored big with Korean automotive investment, thanks to Hyundai in Montgomery. Now, the goal is to broaden that Korean footprint and welcome new investment across various industries.

The Powerhouse Behind the Plan

Blakeley and Choo are with Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC Korea), chosen by the Commerce Department to rep Alabama in South Korea. These guys know their stuff, with over 50 years of experience in helping businesses achieve their investment goals.

Heads Up, ChumCity Citizens: Postal Postmarks Aren't Always What They Seem!

The U.S. Postal Service just dropped a little truth bomb about postmarks, and it’s got folks talking! Apparently, that stamp on your mail might NOT be the day you dropped it off. Who knew? It could be the day it finally gets processed at a regional sorting center, which could be days later!

Why This Matters

This little detail could be a big deal for things like bills, taxes, or any legal documents with deadlines. Late fees, anyone?

What's Up with the USPS?

The Postal Service says this isn’t a new thing, just a clarification. They're streamlining operations, which means mail might not get postmarked right away.

Alabama's Situation

For us Alabamians, especially those in rural areas far from the processing hubs, mail can take a little longer. But here's the good news when it comes to voting...

Alabama's Absentee Ballot Rule

Alabama doesn't care about postmarks for absentee ballots! Our ballots just need to be RECEIVED by the county election officials by noon on Election Day. Miss that deadline, and your vote doesn't count, no matter when it was mailed or postmarked.

Key Takeaways for Alabama Voters

  • Ballots Arrive, Not Just Mailed: It's all about when they get there.
  • No Excuses: We have specific reasons for absentee voting, so follow the rules!

Pro Tips for Avoiding a Mail Meltdown

  • Mail Early, Seriously Early: Don't wait until the last minute.
  • Don't Trust the Postmark: It's not a magic shield.
  • Hand Delivery: If you're cutting it close, drop it off yourself at your county election office!

The USPS suggests getting a manual postmark at the counter or using certified mail for proof of mailing.

Bottom Line

For Alabamians, especially when it comes to absentee ballots, get your mail in EARLY! It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
