Alabama Weather Alert! Rain Today, Ice Potential This Weekend!

Hey Chumsters, grab your umbrellas! We've got rain moving across Alabama today, and it's gonna stick around tonight thanks to a stalled front. Temps will range from the upper 40s in the Tennessee Valley to the low 60s near the coast.

Tomorrow looks mostly cloudy, with the best chance of rain in the southeast. Fingers crossed, many of us will stay dry!

Weekend Weather Outlook: Winter Storm Watch Issued!

Okay, pay attention, ChumCity! The weekend storm system is a tricky one, where even slight temperature changes can make a HUGE difference. A Winter Storm WATCH is in effect for the northern third of Alabama (sorry, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston... you're off the hook for now!).

The Bottom Line: Rain and a Black Ice Threat

For most of us, it's gonna be a rainy weekend. The biggest risk of ice accumulation from freezing rain is in the northwest and northeast corners. But, BLACK ICE could be a major issue for the entire northern half of the state Sunday night and Monday as temps plummet. Don't expect much snow in the Tennessee Valley, but a few flakes are possible Sunday.

Ice accumulation in the Northeast and Northwest should be light (around .10"). Isolated power outages are possible, but widespread ones aren't expected right now.

Regional Breakdown:

  • Southern Alabama: Occasional rain this weekend, maybe even a rumble of thunder! Expect 1-2 inches of rain and a chance of patchy black ice early Monday morning.
  • Birmingham/Tuscaloosa: Mostly rain, probably 2-3 inches. The rain might turn to freezing rain or light snow Sunday afternoon/evening as temps drop. Watch out for black ice Sunday night and Monday – roads could be hazardous!
  • Hamilton/Russellville/Florence: Freezing rain is likely late Saturday morning, potentially leading to ice accumulation. Things should ease up Saturday night as temperatures rise, but another round of freezing rain is possible Sunday afternoon. Black ice is a real concern Sunday night into Monday morning.
  • Cullman/Decatur/Athens/Huntsville: Some freezing rain is possible Saturday afternoon, but temps should be mostly above freezing with cold rain Saturday evening through early Sunday morning. Another period of freezing rain or light snow is possible Sunday, leading to hazardous conditions Sunday afternoon through Monday morning.
  • Scottsboro/Fort Payne/Gadsden/Anniston: A wedge of cold air could bring freezing rain late Saturday or Saturday night. After a brief warm-up Sunday morning, temps will PLUMMET, bringing more freezing rain by midday Sunday. Expect icy travel Sunday afternoon through Monday morning!

Important Reminders:

  • Snow is unlikely, but freezing rain and ice are the big concerns.
  • Temps will drop dramatically on Sunday, so be prepared!
  • Ice accumulation should be generally light (around 0.10"), and widespread power outages are not expected.
  • Colder spots could hit single digits early Tuesday morning. BRRR!

This is a complex forecast, so stay tuned for updates!

Weather History!

On this date in 1904, an estimated F4 tornado destroyed Moundville, killing 37 people. Crazy!

Check back for another update this afternoon! Stay safe out there, Chumsters!

Crypto Kiosk Crackdown Coming to Alabama?

Alabama lawmakers are stepping up to fight a growing wave of cryptocurrency kiosk fraud that's hitting residents hard, especially seniors. Millions have been lost in these scams, and the state is looking to put a stop to it!

The Proposed Solution

Rep. Russell Bedsole has introduced the Cryptocurrency Kiosk Fraud Prevention Act. This bill aims to put safeguards in place, like transaction limits, better disclosures, and ways to get your money back if you've been scammed.

How the Scams Work

These crypto kiosks, basically crypto ATMs, let you turn cash into digital currency fast. The problem? Scammers are using them to trick people. They pretend to be government officials, cops, or even sweethearts, pressuring victims to send money under false pretenses.

Shocking Losses

The Alabama Securities Commission (ASC) shared some eye-opening stories. One woman in Huntsville, 73, lost over $335,000 after thinking she was talking to tech support. Another retired military member from Enterprise, 67, got swindled out of $250,000 in a romance scam!

The Numbers Don't Lie

ASC Director Amanda Senn calls the numbers "staggering and shocking." An ASC review found that of people who used crypto kiosks, a whopping 64% were fraud victims, and over half were 60 or older. They lost a total of $6.5 million!

Wise Words from the ASC

"Anyone can become the victim," says Senn. "Fraudsters are relentless and creative. The only way to avoid becoming a victim is to trust no one who is asking you for money." Always double-check everything!

What the Bill Would Do

The proposed law would limit daily transactions to $1,000 and monthly to $10,000. It would also require U.S.-based customer service, clear fee disclosures, and prevent kiosks from being inside bank ATMs. Plus, it sets up a refund system for fraud cases and penalties for those who break the rules.

Lawmakers Speak Up

"We're committed to protecting Alabamians," says Rep. Bedsole. "Financial fraud is devastating and often affects friends and family as well."

A National Problem

Across the country, the Federal Trade Commission reports huge losses related to crypto kiosk fraud, doubling in just one year!

Got Scammed?

If you think you've been a victim of cryptocurrency fraud, the Alabama Securities Commission wants to hear from you. Give them a call!

Wildcat Roar: Kentucky Coach Calls for Tide to Be Docked!

Hold onto your hats, ChumCity readers, because college hoops just got a whole lot crazier! Kentucky head coach Mark Pope is throwing major shade at Alabama, hinting they shouldn't even think about March Madness. Why? It's all tied to the bonkers situation involving former Tide center Charles Bediako.

Bediako's Back?!

Yep, you read that right. After nearly three years away, including two seasons in the G-League, Bediako's back on the Alabama roster, thanks to a judge's temporary restraining order against the NCAA. He's even eligible to play this weekend against Tennessee!

Pope's Pot Shots

Coach Pope didn't mince words when asked about this potential game-changer (which could see pro players waltzing back into college ball). He stopped just short of outright demanding Alabama be excluded from the NCAA Tournament.

Taking a Stand?

Pope emphasized the NCAA's power to decide who gets a coveted tournament spot. "They might lose in court but they still get to decide what games count," he pointed out, suggesting the NCAA use that power. "I'm just saying that because at some point it is important that we take a stand and regain some tiny ounce of sanity... This game matters too much."

Is Pope right? Should the NCAA step in? Let us know what you think in the comments, ChumCity fam! This is going to be a wild ride!

Election Audits: A Win for Transparency in Alabama?

State Rep. Joe Lovvorn (R-Auburn) is championing election audits to boost voter confidence in the Yellowhammer State. He sees them as crucial for "transparency and accountability."

What's the Deal with Audits?

According to Lovvorn, these post-election audits aren't about overturning results. They're about spotting glitches in voting machines or processes before the next election. He's hoping these audits will come up clean, proving Alabama's elections are on the up-and-up!

House Backs Audit Bill

Alabama House Republicans have greenlit Lovvorn's bill, mandating post-election audits after every major election. Lovvorn emphasizes this will reassure Alabamians that "their vote counts" and actually matters. He insists it's not some wild conspiracy theory, but a practical step for peace of mind.

Overcoming Obstacles

Lovvorn even battled a two-hour filibuster from House Democrats to get the bill through. Now, county probate judges will audit ballots in at least one randomly selected precinct and race after each general election.

NIL Issues: A Federal Fix Needed?

Lovvorn also weighed in on the ongoing Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) drama in college sports. He believes it's escalated to a federal issue.

State Solutions Not Enough?

According to Lovvorn, any state-level tweaks are just moving the goalposts. He previously pushed the "Competitive Edge NIL Tax Cut Act" to give Alabama schools a recruiting advantage.

Tuberville's Take

Lovvorn highlighted U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville's efforts to tackle the NIL issue. He notes Tuberville, having been a coach himself, understands the problems and the potential damage to college sports. Lovvorn says voices from across the spectrum need to speak up before it destroys the "fun of the college competition."

Defense Dollars Under the Microscope: What It Means for Huntsville

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity! Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is shaking things up with a massive review of Small Business Administration (SBA) 8(a) defense contracts. This isn't your average audit – it's a deep dive designed to weed out any funny business.

The Lowdown

Hegseth wants a line-by-line look at every sole-source 8(a) contract over $20 million. Smaller contracts aren't off the hook either! The goal? Make sure the little guys awarded these juicy deals are actually doing the work, not just passing it along. As Hegseth bluntly put it, "If a contract doesn’t make us more lethal, it’s gone." Ouch!

Huntsville's Perspective

What does this mean for Huntsville, a major hub for defense contractors? Well, it could be a good thing! Local firms that play by the rules might actually benefit from the increased scrutiny.

One Company's Take: Cortina Solutions

Huntsville-based Cortina Solutions, an 8(a) engineering firm, isn't sweating it. CEO Edwina Musante says they jumped at the chance to submit their audit info. "We did not hesitate, it's already done," she said. "We do things early, we do them right, and we stand behind our work." She sees the review as a positive step towards accountability.

Leveling the Playing Field?

The 8(a) program is meant to help small, disadvantaged businesses get a piece of the federal contracting pie. But Musante points out that some 8(a) firms face different rules than others, making it tough for true small businesses to compete. She hopes this review will lead to a fairer system.

A Chance for Huntsville to Shine

With the Department of War spending HUGE sums annually on small business contracts, Hegseth's review could be a game-changer. For Huntsville companies like Cortina, it's a chance to show they're the real deal.

The Bottom Line

As Musante says, "If you are doing real work, supporting real missions and running your business the right way, transparency should work in your favor."

Alabama Leaders Honor Rev. Dr. John Killian with Salt and Light Award!

Alabama's Christian leaders converged in Montgomery this week for a powerful prayer rally at the State House, followed by a luncheon nearby. The highlight? Announcing the recipient of the prestigious "Dan Ireland Salt and Light Award."

A Tribute to Alabama's Finest

This annual award recognizes an outstanding Christian leader in Alabama's civic affairs, and it's named after the late Rev. Dan Ireland, a beloved Christian lobbyist and head of ALCAP.

Drumroll, Please...

The 2026 award goes to none other than Rev. Dr. John Killian of Fayette!

Who is John Killian?

This man is a longtime political force within the Alabama Baptist Convention and the Republican Party. Need someone to champion a Biblical position? Killian's your guy. In Alabama circles, when you say "Reverend Doctor," folks immediately think of John Killian.

More Than Just Christian Nationalist

One might call him a "Christian Nationalist," but that wouldn't be quite right. He's a "Christian Alabamaist" – a term we might have just coined! God first, Alabama next, and what's good for Alabama is good for America.

A Life Lived Biblically

Want to know what a Biblical worldview looks like in action? Look no further than John Killian.

The Big Reveal

ALCAP's Rev. Michael Brooks built the suspense before announcing Killian's name, detailing the recipient's accomplishments. It wasn't until Brooks mentioned, "Our recipient was born in Wylam, Alabama," that Killian himself realized he was the surprise honoree.

Killian's Impressive Resume

  • 18 years as a pastor at Maytown Baptist Church
  • Chaplain of the Alabama Republican Party
  • Former State President of the Alabama Baptist Convention
  • Former State President of the Alabama Baptist Pastor's Conference
  • Sought-after speaker for Christians and conservatives
  • Staunch supporter of Alabama heritage
  • Executive Director of the Fayette County Baptist Association (Director of Missions)

A New Beginning

Killian seemed to view the award not as a capstone, but as a launching pad for future service. It was a resounding "Well done, good and faithful servant!" from his peers.
