Alabama Veterans Get a Mental Health Boost!

Big news for Alabama's veterans! A new grant program is rolling out, offering round-the-clock mental health support, every single day of the year.

24/7 Support is Here!

Thanks to a grant awarded to Uwill, a leading mental health and wellness platform, veterans across the state will have immediate access to confidential support. Think instant appointments with licensed counselors, teletherapy, crisis connection, on-demand medical care, and more!

Funding the Future of Veteran Care

This awesome program is fueled by Act 2024-426, signed by Governor Kay Ivey, setting aside $3 million for pilot programs. The goal? To bridge the gaps in current services and make sure every Alabama veteran gets the care they deserve.

Addressing a Critical Need

Alabama, with its high veteran population, knows the importance of mental health support. With nearly half of veterans needing assistance, this initiative aims to reach over 40,000 veterans aged 18-34, providing them with the private and confidential support they need, whenever they need it.

A Commitment to Our Heroes

"Veterans represent the very best of our nation," says Michael London, Uwill's founder and CEO. "We’re committed to ensuring veterans have the care and support they need to thrive." This program is a testament to Alabama's unwavering respect and dedication to its military community!

Big Bucks for Missiles: What it Means for Huntsville

A whopping $1 billion investment from the Department of War is headed to L3Harris Technologies’ missile biz, and Huntsville could be a big winner! This move is all about beefing up the nation's solid rocket motor supply chain.

The Deal Deets

The Department of War has signed a letter of intent, partnering directly with L3Harris and pledging that cool billion in a convertible preferred equity investment for their Missile Solutions business. This division, which includes the old Aerojet Rocketdyne operations, might even become its own publicly traded company by the second half of 2026! Of course, Congress has to sign off on it first.

Huntsville's Role

While the exact location for expanded production isn't set in stone, Huntsville is already a major player in L3Harris's missile manufacturing game. They have over 700 employees churning out crucial components for missile defense systems right here in town.

L3Harris Speaks

A spokesperson from L3Harris in Huntsville said their local operations are key to boosting solid rocket motor production and meeting the nation's defense needs. They're investing billions in their facilities in Alabama, Virginia, and Arkansas, building and upgrading around 60 facilities!

Growth Spurt!

Huntsville's seen some serious growth, with employee numbers jumping about 60% in the last five years! Even since their AMF-South facility showcase in August, their Huntsville workforce has grown 15%, and they're still hiring.

Advanced Manufacturing

L3Harris opened a massive new advanced manufacturing facility, AMF-South, in Huntsville back in August 2025. This place is HUGE – bigger than six football fields! It’s already added about 40 jobs, and they're planning on adding over 100 more in the coming years. This new facility complements their existing AMF-North, which opened in 2019.

Why the Investment?

The Department of War says this investment will rapidly expand domestic production capacity for solid rocket motors, modernize facilities, and stabilize the supply chain, which is super important for national security.

What it Means for Huntsville

This agreement underscores Huntsville's established role in missile defense manufacturing and puts it in a prime position to support future growth as L3Harris ramps up production. Bottom line? More jobs, more innovation, and more missiles being made right here in the Rocket City!

Alabama's AI Opportunity: It's Time to Connect the Dots!

Back in '89, Alabama went big with the Supercomputer Authority. Governor Hunt's gamble paid off big time, fueling research, education, and the economy for decades. Now, we've got a similar chance with AI!

Groundwork Laid, Now for the Build!

Governor Ivey's Generative AI Task Force dropped a solid report in November, packed with recommendations. Think national standards, better procurement, and killer training programs. Awesome groundwork, right? But now comes the fun part: making it all happen.

Alabama's Secret AI Weapon

Huntsville is bursting with world-class talent thanks to NASA, Redstone Arsenal, and a ton of private sector giants. And don't forget the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering churning out whiz kids! Auburn's AI@AU and UA's ALA-AI are connecting students to real-world projects. UAB's Heersink AI Founders Club is even boosting AI startups focused on healthcare! HudsonAlpha is doing amazing things with computational biology, too. The talent's HERE, people!

The Missing Link: Coordination!

Thing is, all these resources are kinda doing their own thing. State agencies are scratching their heads about AI while brilliant minds sit idle. Researchers are working on projects while the government's dealing with problems they could totally solve! We need to connect the dots. It's not a resource problem, it's a coordination problem.

The Alabama Playbook: Three Steps to Victory

Forget more task forces! We need a public-private partnership and these three moves:

  1. Appoint an AI Boss: One person, reporting directly to the Governor, whose sole mission is to activate Alabama's AI potential! They'll find pilot projects, build partnerships, and help agencies adopt AI. Think of it like a White House AI Czar, but for Alabama.
  2. Launch Pilot Programs: Let's get hands-on! Start small – one agency, one workflow, one measurable win. Partner with universities, Huntsville's tech gurus, or private sector pros to cook up solutions. Document everything! This builds know-how, not just vendor loyalty.
  3. Formalize Partnerships: Hook up with the talent we've got. Internships with the Cyber School? Advisory roles for Huntsville's tech community? Partner with university faculty? Quarterly pow-wows where agency folks learn from the experts? These relationships are cheap but require someone to orchestrate them!

The Investment Case: Pennies on the Dollar

We're talking about a State AI Coordinator, some pilot program cash, university partnerships, and training.

  • AI Coordinator + Staff: $400k-$600k/year
  • Pilot Programs: $200k-$300k
  • University Partnerships & Internships: $100k
  • Training Development: $150k

First-year cost? Around $1 million. Less than 0.01% of the state's general fund. That's seed money to prove the concept and unlock bigger funding down the road. And hey, think of all the brilliant minds we're gonna keep in Alabama!

Be the First Investor!

Let's treat AI like a startup. The state invests first, proves the idea, and unlocks more resources. Everyone wins: better government, stronger partnerships, economic growth, and homegrown talent that sticks around.

Time to Build!

Alabama's got the talent, the institutions, and a track record of tech leadership. We just need to connect the dots and make a modest investment. The Task Force laid the foundation; now it's time to build!

Bama QB Turns Down Millions!

Ex-Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson said "nah" to a whopping $6.5 million in NIL deals from Miami, Ole Miss, and Tennessee! Instead of chasing the cash, he's staying put at Bama! Alabama Considers Tough Justice

Alabama lawmakers are thinking about bringing the hammer down on child rapists with execution. This puts Alabama alongside other states exploring similar laws. Of course, the usual suspects are whining about "legal and moral concerns" to protect the wicked.

SCOTUS Might Save Women's Sports!

The Supreme Court is diving into a case that could stop dudes from competing in women's sports nationwide! Alabama's already been a leader on this issue, pushing common sense and biological reality over the screams of people who can't even define "woman."

Senate Almost Threw Shade at Trump

The U.S. Senate nearly blocked a Trump administration request for war powers related to Venezuela after the Maduro situation. It was all about the power struggle between the President and Congress when it comes to sending troops overseas.

ICE Action Sparks Controversy in MN

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey wants protestors to chill, while Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's anti-ICE livestream got roasted for pouring gasoline on the fire. Walz then chickened out and deleted it after the shooting.

Budget Battle Brewing in Alabama!

Alabama leaders are bracing for a budget "rock fight"! They're worried about funding SNAP benefits due to federal changes, potential cuts, and the state's own money problems. Time to get smart with that cash!

New Era for Moody Blue Devils!

Moody High School's gridiron is about to get a serious shakeup! They've snagged Kyle Tatum, formerly a defensive line guru with the UAB Blazers, to lead their football program.

From Blazers to Blue Devils

Tatum is stepping into some BIG shoes, taking over from Jake Ganus, who's now calling the shots at Pell City. But get this - Ganus just led Moody to a 5A state championship! Talk about pressure!

Tatum's Promise

Over the weekend, Tatum met the community and laid out his game plan: relentless effort and a team Moody can be proud of. "Nobody's gonna outwork us," he declared. Sounds like a winning strategy!

Cigar-Gate Fallout

Of course, the championship season wasn't without its drama. The team faced AHSAA scrutiny after that cigar pic went viral, leading to suspensions that will linger into the new season. Ganus took full responsibility, saying, "Leadership is important to me. Everything reflects me."

Tatum's Challenge

Now, Tatum inherits a program riding high, but also facing some immediate hurdles. Can he maintain that championship edge and build on the legacy? One thing's for sure: Moody football is about to be a wild ride!
