Alabama Weather Alert! Rain Today, Ice Potential This Weekend!
Hey Chumsters, grab your umbrellas! We've got rain moving across Alabama today, and it's gonna stick around tonight thanks to a stalled front. Temps will range from the upper 40s in the Tennessee Valley to the low 60s near the coast.
Tomorrow looks mostly cloudy, with the best chance of rain in the southeast. Fingers crossed, many of us will stay dry!
Weekend Weather Outlook: Winter Storm Watch Issued!
Okay, pay attention, ChumCity! The weekend storm system is a tricky one, where even slight temperature changes can make a HUGE difference. A Winter Storm WATCH is in effect for the northern third of Alabama (sorry, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston... you're off the hook for now!).
The Bottom Line: Rain and a Black Ice Threat
For most of us, it's gonna be a rainy weekend. The biggest risk of ice accumulation from freezing rain is in the northwest and northeast corners. But, BLACK ICE could be a major issue for the entire northern half of the state Sunday night and Monday as temps plummet. Don't expect much snow in the Tennessee Valley, but a few flakes are possible Sunday.
Ice accumulation in the Northeast and Northwest should be light (around .10"). Isolated power outages are possible, but widespread ones aren't expected right now.
Regional Breakdown:
- Southern Alabama: Occasional rain this weekend, maybe even a rumble of thunder! Expect 1-2 inches of rain and a chance of patchy black ice early Monday morning.
- Birmingham/Tuscaloosa: Mostly rain, probably 2-3 inches. The rain might turn to freezing rain or light snow Sunday afternoon/evening as temps drop. Watch out for black ice Sunday night and Monday – roads could be hazardous!
- Hamilton/Russellville/Florence: Freezing rain is likely late Saturday morning, potentially leading to ice accumulation. Things should ease up Saturday night as temperatures rise, but another round of freezing rain is possible Sunday afternoon. Black ice is a real concern Sunday night into Monday morning.
- Cullman/Decatur/Athens/Huntsville: Some freezing rain is possible Saturday afternoon, but temps should be mostly above freezing with cold rain Saturday evening through early Sunday morning. Another period of freezing rain or light snow is possible Sunday, leading to hazardous conditions Sunday afternoon through Monday morning.
- Scottsboro/Fort Payne/Gadsden/Anniston: A wedge of cold air could bring freezing rain late Saturday or Saturday night. After a brief warm-up Sunday morning, temps will PLUMMET, bringing more freezing rain by midday Sunday. Expect icy travel Sunday afternoon through Monday morning!
Important Reminders:
- Snow is unlikely, but freezing rain and ice are the big concerns.
- Temps will drop dramatically on Sunday, so be prepared!
- Ice accumulation should be generally light (around 0.10"), and widespread power outages are not expected.
- Colder spots could hit single digits early Tuesday morning. BRRR!
This is a complex forecast, so stay tuned for updates!
