Big News: Alabama House Passes Bill to Combat Opioid Crisis!

The Alabama House of Representatives just gave a HUGE thumbs-up to House Bill 487. This means a whopping $43 million from the state’s Opioid Treatment and Abatement Fund is heading to where it's needed most in 2026!

What's the Deal?

Spearheaded by State Rep. Rex Reynolds (R-Huntsville), this bill spreads $43,138,650 across various initiatives targeting prevention, treatment, recovery, mental health, and law enforcement. The House voted a resounding 102-0 in favor on Feb. 26, and now it's on to the Senate Finance and Taxation General Fund Committee. If all goes well, this plan kicks off June 1, 2026!

Where's the Money Going?

A big chunk – $26.36 million – is earmarked for the Alabama Department of Mental Health. This will fuel grants, keep the crisis line buzzing, support civil commitment beds, and stock up on naloxone.

Diving Deeper into the Dollars:

  • Prevention, treatment, and recovery grants: $8.93 million
  • 988 Crisis Line: $4 million
  • Civil commitment beds: $7.5 million
  • State Medicaid match: $2 million
  • Residential detox treatment: $1 million
  • Naloxone: $1 million
  • Marketing Campaign: $1.3 million
  • Adolescent treatment: $500,000
  • Addiction Medicine Education: $130,000

Other Key Investments:

  • Administrative Office of Courts (Specialty Courts): $3 million
  • District Attorneys: $2.1 million
  • Child Advocacy Centers: $2.136 million
  • UAB Psychiatry Program: $2 million
  • Auburn University Prevention Program: $1.9 million
  • Board of Pardons and Paroles: $1.5 million
  • Department of Corrections: $1 million
  • USA Health: $1.1 million
  • Office of Prosecution Services: $1.092 million
  • Department of Senior Services: $500,000
  • Department of Forensic Sciences: $450,000

Promising Signs!

Reportedly, drug overdoses have dropped by 30% year-over-year. This shows that directing settlement funds to prevention, treatment, and recovery programs can really make a difference!

What's Next?

With the House on board, House Bill 487 heads to the Alabama Senate. If it passes there and gets signed into law, Alabama will continue its fight against opioid misuse, providing more treatment and strengthening recovery services.

Alabama's Bold Leap into Energy Innovation: Carbon Capture & Storage!

Alabama's always been about building a better future! We've gone from steel giants to aerospace leaders, and now? We're staring down an awesome opportunity: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)! It’s a chance to be front-runners in energy innovation, keep jobs humming, lure in fresh industries, and boost America's energy security. Seriously, folks, it's a win-win!

What's the Deal with CCS?

This ain't pie-in-the-sky stuff. CCS is happening right now all over the U.S. and the world! Think cement, steel, and manufacturing – these industries need intense heat and constant power from traditional fuels. Renewables alone can't cut it. CCS steps in: capturing CO2 right at the source and locking it away safely deep underground. We keep the factories rolling while being responsible about emissions!

Why Alabama? We're Ready-Made for This!

Our geology is perfect. We're talking deep, secure storage in saline formations and old oil & gas fields – all protected by layers of rock that keep everything where it should be.

And get this: We've got the workforce already! Decades in energy, pipelines, and heavy industry means our engineers, geologists, and skilled workers know their stuff. CCS builds on what we already do best!

Alabama's Taking Charge!

Our lawmakers nailed it in 2024 with the Carbon Dioxide Storage Facility Act. Clear rules based on science for permits, operations, and monitoring? Check! We're telling investors and manufacturers: Alabama’s serious about innovation and ready for responsible growth!

The Clock's Ticking!

Texas and Louisiana are already on this, pouring billions into CCS. If we snooze, we lose out on investments and jobs.

These aren't just quick wins. CCS means long-term gigs for engineers, technicians, construction crews, and more! Rural communities get a real boost with stable jobs and investment.

Bipartisan Support for Good Reason!

CCS is practical! It’s a smart, effective, and sustainable way to handle emissions. This technology has been around for ages, and the storage sites are studied and watched like hawks. It's a proven way to manage emissions while keeping energy reliable and affordable.

Bottom Line: We Need Reliable Energy

Our electricity demand is skyrocketing! Manufacturing, tech, and population growth all need power around the clock. CCS lets us tap into our own energy resources and be environmentally responsible, cutting our reliance on foreign sources.

The Choice is Ours!

Lead the way or watch someone else grab the glory? The Carbon Dioxide Storage Facility Act was a great start, but we need to keep going with smart regulations and quick permits.

Alabama has everything it takes: geology, workforce, and a solid policy foundation. Embracing CCS isn't about choosing between jobs and the environment; it's about boosting both through innovation! Let's answer the call and lead!

Dilfer Dishes on UAB Struggles: "Leftovers" and Regrets?

Former UAB Blazers head coach Trent Dilfer is back in the spotlight, and this time he's spilling the tea on why his tenure in Birmingham went south. Remember that 9-21 record, including a measly five conference wins and zero road victories? Yeah, he's talking about that.

Transfer Portal Woes

Dilfer recently hopped on Outkick to discuss the brutal reality of the transfer portal and how it impacted the UAB program. His assessment of the players he brought in? Let's just say he didn't mince words, calling them "leftovers" that bigger programs didn't want. Ouch!

High School Hindsight

"If I were to do it all over again," Dilfer confessed, "I would have just stuck with high school [players]… and been a .500 football team." He laments relying on the portal, claiming that those "leftover" players shrunk when the pressure was on. According to him, those players, who came from schools like Maryland and Georgia Tech, lacked the competitive edge to thrive when things got tough.

Accountability, Anyone?

But hold on a minute! Isn't it the head coach's job to get players to respond in the face of adversity? Personal fouls, lack of discipline – those issues usually land squarely on the coach's shoulders, don't they?

This latest commentary feels like another attempt by Dilfer to sidestep responsibility for the program's downturn. Under Bill Clark, UAB was racking up eight-plus wins a year. It's becoming increasingly clear that the Blazers made the right decision in parting ways with Dilfer.

Hypocrisy Alert?

Nitrogen Execution Controversy

Katherine Robertson, the Attorney General's chief counsel and a 2026 hopeful, is defending the timing of Muslim death row inmate Charles Lee “Sonny” Burton's nitrogen hypoxia execution. Scheduled during Ramadan, Robertson argues Burton had plenty of Ramadans (34 out of 35 years on death row!), and calls the uproar a delaying tactic.

Alabama Scores Big in ESG Lawsuit

Attorney General Steve Marshall snagged a $29.5 million settlement with Vanguard in a multistate lawsuit about ESG and antitrust. Vanguard has to stop using shareholdings for political pressure. The fight continues against BlackRock and State Street.

School Choice: Busting the $100 Million Myth

Stephanie Smith from the Alabama Policy Institute is setting the record straight about school choice. She's debunking claims that it costs districts $100 million, pointing out Alabama's record $12.2 billion education funding. She says the CHOOSE Act ESAs fund kids, not bureaucracies!

Hoover's Hustle: Mayor Derzis Tackles Infrastructure Head-On!

Mayor Nick Derzis is wasting no time putting his infrastructure plan into action, folks! Fresh off his election victory, he's laser-focused on investments, grabbing those grant dollars, and building strong relationships with state leaders and business partners.

"Nick @ Nite" Breakdown: What's the Plan?

In the latest episode of "Nick @ Nite," Derzis dives deep into the city's infrastructure blueprint and the concrete steps being taken to address some long-standing needs. And remember, the City of Hoover drops a new episode every first Monday of the month.

Urgent Action on Capital Needs

A huge part of Derzis's plan is tackling that backlog of capital needs. That $15 million capital budget recently approved by the City Council? A total game-changer!

"It's a big deal," Derzis explains. "For years, Hoover hasn't been making the necessary investments in our infrastructure, from roads and fire trucks to stormwater systems."

A $150 Million Reality Check

After a thorough assessment, city officials uncovered a whopping $150 million in deferred capital needs.

"This isn't a wish list, it's a necessity," Derzis emphasizes. "We're going to have to address it." But he cautions, "One budget cycle doesn't fix years of neglect."

Securing the Bag: Grants and Partnerships

The City Council just snagged a $1.1 million ADECA grant that was about to expire! This will help with the Hoover East project and shore up electrical infrastructure.

"Those funds would have been lost had we not acted," Derzis warns.

And they're not stopping there! Hoover has also applied for around $350,000 in ALDOT paving assistance and is making headway on the Highway 31 drainage project. The strategy? Chase every dollar and partnership they can find!

Face-to-Face: Building Relationships

Derzis recently hit Montgomery to connect with Hoover's legislative crew and state officials.

"Face-to-face is the best way," he says. "It shows our state government that we're actively working and ready to collaborate."

Galleria Focus

And get this - city officials recently had a meeting with the mall's ownership group - a face-to-face that hadn't happened in YEARS!

"You don't wait for things to happen. You've got to go after them," Derzis insists.

"When you talk about Hoover, people think about the Galleria," he adds. "We're going to make it happen."

Transparency is Key!

Derzis is committed to keeping things transparent with "Nick @ Nite." He wants residents to hold them accountable and ask tough questions about how their money is being spent.

Alabama AG Promises No New Taxes in Senate Bid

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is throwing his hat in the ring for Tommy Tuberville's soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat, and he's making a bold promise: no new taxes!

Taxpayer Protection Pledge Signed

Marshall recently inked the Americans for Tax Reform's Taxpayer Protection Pledge while in D.C. This means he's officially committed to fighting tooth and nail against any and all tax hikes.

Marshall's Stance

"I'm putting my commitment to Alabama taxpayers where it counts – in writing. No games, no wiggle room," Marshall declared. He emphasized that Alabama families work hard for their money and deserve a senator who will fiercely protect every single dollar.

No Tax Rate Hikes

Marshall is specifically vowing to oppose any efforts to increase income tax rates for individuals or businesses and will also fight against any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits unless matched dollar-for-dollar by further reducing tax rates.

Conservative Credentials

Marshall touted his conservative credentials, highlighting his career battling federal overreach, defending the Second Amendment, protecting the unborn, and standing up for Alabama's working families. He added, "Signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge is just one more promise I’m proud to make – and one more I intend to keep as the next Senator from Alabama."

Support from Americans for Tax Reform

Grover Norquist, Founder and President of Americans for Tax Reform, praised Marshall's "principled stand" and commitment to fiscal responsibility. He called the Pledge "a powerful symbol of his unwavering support for taxpayers."

The Competition

Marshall isn't the only one vying for the Senate seat; his competitors in the Republican Primary include U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, former Navy Seal Jared Hudson, and former Trump official Morgan Murphy, among others. Moore has also signed the pledge.
