Trump's Gridiron Gabfests: Politics Over Pigskin?

So, guess who made waves last week? Yup, Donald Trump! He popped up with college football guru Josh Pate, and the chatter's been non-stop ever since.

Golf, Politics, and Gridiron Greats

Turns out, Trump recently teed off with Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and even Florida Governor Ron DeSantis! Pate dug deep, wondering what these pow-wows are really about.

The Inside Scoop

Trump confessed it's mostly political chatter, not X's and O's. "They talk to me about politics really, more so than football," he revealed. "They want to know what’s happening with Iran. How’d you do that with Venezuela." Intriging, right?

A Saban Sideline?

Funny enough, Saban's previously said Trump's a die-hard sports fan, always eager to talk football. Maybe they meet somewhere in the middle?

NIL and the Political Playbook

Saban's been a huge voice for NIL reform, pushing for changes in the political arena. While Trump's dipped his toes in, impactful legislation hasn't materialized. Could Saban’s connection to Trump be a game-changer? Maybe some presidential persuasion could spark real action before it's too late!

Another Championship Snub?

Seriously, why can't a winning team visit the White House without the usual suspects kicking up a fuss? It's like clockwork.

Haters Gonna Hate

Seems like some folks, like Mallory Hagan (remember her?), are practically celebrating that Team USA's golden girls of hockey won't be getting any State of the Union love.

Trump Derangement Syndrome?

The real reason? Pure, unadulterated dislike for Donald Trump. Apparently, political grudges trump (pun intended!) supporting amazing female athletes.

Seriously?

So much for girl power, huh?

Luther Strange's Lasting Legacy: A Call to Public Service

You might remember Luther Strange: towering figure, memorable name, and a key player in Alabama politics during some seriously wild times. Well, he's still making waves!

A New Lecture Series at UA Law

The University of Alabama School of Law just launched the Luther Strange Public Service Lecture Series. This new series will feature speakers focused on public service and leadership, aiming to inspire future legal eagles.

Why Public Service Matters

Strange himself established the lecture series to highlight the crucial role public service plays in shaping our legal, governmental, and social landscape. He hopes it'll "inform and inspire...law students, to consider public service." He emphasized, "The state needs it, and I promise you will not regret it."

Inaugural Lecture: A Deep Dive into the Rule of Law

The inaugural speaker was Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti. He delivered a powerful message on the importance of our nation's constitutional system, emphasizing the rule of law.

Skrmetti's Challenge to Law Students

Skrmetti argued that "elite constraints on democratic processes" harm the country, leading to resentment that the law is stricter for those who follow it. He urged law students to play a vital role in salvaging our institutions. "Leave the law better than you found it," he challenged, adding they are "blessed with a gift millennia in the making."

Lively Discussion and Engagement

After his address, Skrmetti engaged in a lively Q&A session with students, diving into current affairs and even debating differing viewpoints – a true example of the civic discourse he championed!

Alabama Delegation Reacts to Trump's SOTU Address

President Trump's State of the Union address stirred up quite the buzz in Alabama's U.S. House delegation. The speech, packed with claims of economic revival, a tough stance on immigration, and promises of global strength, definitely got people talking!

Trump didn't hold back, taking jabs at his predecessor and the Democrats, claiming they fueled "the worst inflation in the history of our country." He touted his administration's success in slashing core inflation, boasting a rate of just 1.7% in the last quarter of 2025.

Republicans Cheer Trump's "America First" Message

U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) was all in, praising Trump's "America First" approach. "When America is first, America prospers," Strong declared, highlighting how Trump's policies are supposedly lowering costs and restoring strength at home and abroad, a stark contrast to the Biden years.

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) suggested Trump had brought "America back into the Golden Age," after Biden's "disastrous four years."

U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) called it a "strong and clear State of the Union address." U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) chimed in, saying, "The President is ready to make America even greater, and I am ready to help him!"

U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) added his support, stating that the speech proved that, thanks to Trump, "America is strong and getting stronger."

Democrats Criticize Trump's Claims

However, not everyone was singing Trump's praises. U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) slammed the speech as full of "lies" and "insults." It's clear the SOTU address ignited strong feelings on both sides of the aisle!

Alabama Energy Debate: Bill Dead, But Fight's Not Over!

Folks, things are heating up in Montgomery! Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman) just dropped a statement on a bill (HB392) that aimed to shake up the Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC). Remember, the PSC is the body that regulates our utilities, and currently, we get to VOTE for its members.

What Happened?

The bill would have shifted the PSC from an elected body to one appointed by the Governor and legislative bigwigs. Gudger says the fear was a "Soros-funded" takeover like he claims happened in Georgia.

Why the Bill Died

Gudger admits the bill moved too fast and didn't give Alabamians enough info. Bottom line? "There is no scenario in which this bill...can garner the votes necessary to pass." Ouch.

What's Next?

Don't think this is the end of the story! Gudger emphasizes the need to address energy issues, guided by these convictions:

  • Power Bills are a Burden: High energy costs are hurting families, seniors, and businesses.
  • The Right to Vote is Sacred: We shouldn't give up our right to choose our leaders.
  • Outside Agitators are Coming: Deep-pocketed groups want to weaken our power grid for their own gain.

The Call to Action

Gudger wants a unified front – Senate, House, Governor, and US – to protect the PSC from radical environmentalists who want to raise our rates. He's calling for an "Alabama plan built by Alabama’s people for Alabama’s people," not one dictated by California or Beijing. This is going to require a REAL team effort!

Alabama Senators Slam Dems' "Crazy" Reaction to Trump's Speech

Alabama's Senators Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt didn't hold back after President Trump's State of the Union address. They praised Trump's performance and absolutely torched the Democrats' response, calling it childish and detached from reality.

Trump's "Crazy" Comment Sparks Fury

During the speech, Trump called out Democrats for remaining seated when he discussed protecting minors from radical transgender procedures. "Look, nobody stands up," Trump said. "These people are crazy. I’m telling you. They’re crazy."

Tuberville Fires Back

After Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called it a "state of delusion," Tuberville jumped to Trump's defense, saying his colleagues deserved the criticism. "Democrats are upset that President Trump hurt their feelings by calling them 'crazy.' Well, that’s too bad," Tuberville stated, reminding everyone that Democrats have been slinging insults like "Nazis" and "fascists" for years.

Britt Echoes the Sentiment

Britt also took aim at the Democrats for their seated protest during the speech. She argued on Fox News that their behavior showed a lack of duty to the American people, prioritizing "illegal aliens" instead. She lauded Trump as "masterful."

Praising Trump's Message

Britt further highlighted Trump's core message, particularly his focus on making life more affordable for Americans. She cited gas prices, home affordability, and public safety as key areas where Trump promises action. She concluded by stating Trump consistently delivers on his promises, setting him apart from other politicians. "President Trump is a man of the people and he proves that every day.”

Health Committee Gets a New Leader!

Big news from Montgomery! State Rep. Jeff Sorrells (R-Hartford) is the new head honcho of the House Committee on Health, taking the reins from Rep. Paul Lee (R-Dothan), who’s now House Majority Leader.

Who is Jeff Sorrells?

Representing House District 87 since 2018 (that’s parts of Geneva and Houston counties, folks!), Sorrells is a Hartford homegrown guy. Before heading to the Statehouse, he served on the Hartford City Council and even as mayor. He's also a banker by day and a Troy University business administration grad. Talk about a busy guy!

Speaker's Stamp of Approval

House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter is stoked to have Sorrells in the position. He said, "Rep. Sorrells knows the ropes after serving on the committee for the last five years. He's got the knowledge and relationships to keep things running smoothly!"

Sorrells' Promise

Sorrells is ready to get to work, promising to put the health of Alabamians first. "This committee is super important for the health and well-being of everyone in Alabama," he said. "I'm thankful Speaker Ledbetter trusts me with this role and I can't wait to get started!"

Alabama House Passes Bill Targeting Church Disruptions

Hold on to your hymnals, folks! The Alabama House just gave the green light to HB363, a bill that could slap some serious penalties on anyone caught causing a ruckus at religious services. The vote? A decisive 75-27.

What's the Deal?

State Rep. Greg Barnes (R-Jasper) is the mastermind behind this legislation, and he says it's all about protecting religious institutions of all kinds. Apparently, a protest at a Minneapolis church last month, where demonstrators interrupted a service, sparked the need for this bill. You might remember that Don Lemon, the ex-CNN guy, even got arrested there!

Felony Follies?

So, what does this bill actually do? Well, if you knowingly waltz into a church, mosque, synagogue, or any other place of worship during a service with the intention of disrupting it through riot, protest, or general bad behavior, you could be facing a Class C felony charge. Blocking access to the property gets you in trouble, too! And if you're a repeat offender? Buckle up for a mandatory minimum of five years in the slammer.

Is It Really Necessary?

Not everyone's thrilled. State Rep. Chris England (D-Tuscaloosa) slammed the bill as unnecessary and basically unenforceable. He argued that the felony classification actually makes it harder to arrest people on the spot. "It's theater!" he exclaimed, suggesting it's just a knee-jerk reaction to something seen on TV.

What's Next?

HB363 is now headed to the Senate, so stay tuned! Will it become law? Only time will tell.

Alabama Sheriff Gives Thumbs Up to Trump's Border Policies!

Sheriff Scott Byrd of Coffee County, Alabama, is singing praises for former President Donald Trump, crediting him with making law enforcement a whole lot easier. Byrd claims Trump's border security efforts have significantly impacted his county's fight against crime.

Cracking Down on Crime?

Speaking at a Republican Study Committee roundtable, Sheriff Byrd, invited by U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, said he's noticed a positive shift. According to Byrd, the clampdown on the border has made it tougher for methamphetamines to flow into his community. "Our crime is all dealing with methamphetamine, and it all comes from the border, and you got to tighten up that border," Byrd stated. "My narcotics guys, they’re not getting as easy busts as they used to. So that means it’s working!"

Local Boy Makes Good

Byrd also shared a lighthearted moment with Congressman Moore, joking about their shared hometown roots. "And I can’t say anything good about Barry," he quipped. "He knows I love him, and he knows it. We all grew up down there on the same street, so we fight for our families and our people."

Military-Grade Gear Keeps Deputies Safe

Sheriff Byrd mentioned his department utilizes the 1033 program to equip his deputies with necessary equipment. "I’ve got 43 deputies under the the 1033 program," he explained. "I’ve got a couple helicopters, some military equipment to keep my guys safe, which keeps, you know, keeps them so they come home and see their family." He concluded, "The administration we got now was working, and I’m proud to work with Barry, and he’s doing a good job."

Moore Stands with Trump's Stance

Representative Moore has been a vocal supporter of strengthening border security. He believes that the prior administration's policies endangered lives. He expressed his thanks for Trump's efforts in supposedly ending "the open border madness and keeping the American people safe!"

Alabama's "Gulf of America" Push!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCityizens! The Alabama House just gave the green light to HB2, a bill that could rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" for all official state business. The vote was 74-30, so it's got some serious momentum.

Why the Name Change?

State Rep. David Standridge (R-Hayden) is the driving force behind this, arguing the new name better reflects the USA's huge influence over that big ol' body of water. Think President Trump's earlier executive order pushing for the same switch. Florida and Louisiana are already on board, too!

When Will This Happen?

If the bill becomes law, expect to see "Gulf of America" popping up around October 1, 2026. Agencies would switch over when practical, but schools can still stick with "Gulf of Mexico" for history and learning purposes. Plus, no immediate rush to swap out all the signs if it breaks the bank. Slow and steady wins the race!

A Patriotic Statement?

Standridge believes renaming the gulf is a "patriotic statement." He thinks more states joining the "Gulf of America" bandwagon will make it tougher for future presidents to undo the change. Could this be the start of a major shift in how we all refer to this key waterway?

What's Next?

HB2 is now headed to the Senate for a good ol' debate. Stay tuned, ChumCity, because this could get interesting!
