Alabama's Wins Pile Up!

We're officially past the halfway mark of this year's Regular Session – 19 legislative days down, and a whole lot accomplished for Alabama! This week alone, I signed Senate Bill 149, opening doors for more veterans to become teachers, and the Healthy Early Development and Screen Time Act, focused on our youngest Alabamians. Remember the Child Predator Death Penalty Act from earlier? Public safety is a HUGE priority!

Getting the Job Done

Alabama is getting things done, plain and simple! Big shoutout to Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter and Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger for their awesome leadership! As I approach my tenth Regular Session as governor, I can't help but reflect on our incredible progress, especially compared to the gridlock in Congress.

Alabama: A National Leader

Guess what? The Republican Governors Association shared some seriously good news:

  • Top 10 in the nation for cost of living!
  • Top 5 for housing affordability!
  • And the NUMBER ONE most affordable state overall!

That's the result of years of rock-solid, conservative governance. We put in the hard work and implement smart policies. Other governors are asking for our secret sauce!

Speaker Ledbetter: A Key Partner

Alabama Republicans are leading the charge on common-sense policies, and the nation is taking notice. Our secret? Dedicated leaders, like Speaker Ledbetter, who aren't afraid to tackle tough issues. We've been side-by-side for years, advancing conservative policy and making government work for YOU!

Backing the Blue and More

Last year's Safe Alabama public safety package, including the Back the Blue bill, was a HUGE win. It sends a clear message to our law enforcement: Alabama has your back! We're also expanding Aniah’s Law to keep criminals off our streets and cracking down on fentanyl traffickers.

Standing Strong on Key Issues

While other states struggle with illegal immigration, we're supporting law enforcement and prioritizing American citizens. We're ensuring election integrity with voter ID laws, championing the strongest pro-life legislation in the country, boasting the best education savings account program (CHOOSE Act), and protecting girls' sports. We even know what a woman is!

Results You Can See

We've delivered $1.4 billion in tax cuts, attracted historic economic investments, improved our infrastructure, and made nationally recognized education gains. And Speaker Ledbetter has been a part of EVERY bit of this success!

The Work Continues

As I said in my state of the state address, Speaker Ledbetter is an outstanding Speaker, and Alabama is better because of his service. Our work isn't done yet! Let's keep our eyes on the prize and make Alabama the most conservative state and the best place to live, work, and raise a family! Together, we can make Alabama a model for the nation!

Kay Ivey, 54th Governor of Alabama

Tuberville Sounds Alarm on "Radical Islam"

Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is raising eyebrows with his strong stance on "radical Islam" following recent U.S. military actions in Iran. He's calling for the deportation of anyone supporting what he describes as a dangerous "death cult" ideology.

Senate Floor Speech Sparks Debate

Tuberville recently took to the Senate floor, backing President Trump's moves against Iran's nuclear program and the elimination of a key Iranian figure. He went on to suggest that anyone adhering to Sharia Law should be immediately deported.

"Not a Religion, But a Death Cult"

"Radical Islam is not a religion," Tuberville declared, "It's a death cult... that encourages Muslims to kill all infidels." He believes this translates to targeting Americans and Christians.

Threat Within Our Borders?

According to Tuberville, the threat isn't just overseas. He claims that under the Biden administration, "thousands of radical Islamic terrorists illegally entered our country." He questions how many terrorists are currently operating within the U.S.

Proposed Legislation: The "No Sharia Act"

The Senator introduced a two-bill package last year, including the "No Sharia Act," aimed at preventing the enforcement of Sharia Law in America.

Welcome, But With Conditions

Tuberville stated that those who wish to come to America peacefully, practice their religion, and embrace American values are welcome. However, he insists that "if you believe that Sharia law supersedes American law... you should be deported pronto." He argues that Sharia Law is "anti-American" and has no place in a free society.

Funding Homeland Security: A Matter of Urgency

Tuberville is also urging Democrats to prioritize funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He believes that "the enemies are inside the gates" and that it's time to "reopen the Department of Homeland Security, deporting every single terrorist who is living in this country." He warns that if action isn't taken, "our way of life, our Christian values, our freedoms, and our national identity are gone."

Senator Tuberville Salutes Alabama Hero!

Our very own Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is shining a spotlight on a true Alabama legend! He's named Harold Stanford of Barfield as March's Veteran of the Month, honoring his incredible dedication to our country.

Hometown Hero: Harold Stanford

Senator Tuberville released a video this week to celebrate U.S. Army Lt. Col. Harold Stanford. Get ready to feel inspired!

From Clay County to the Skies

Tuberville emphasized Stanford's deep Alabama roots and his soaring career in military aviation. "Alabama is proud to be home to so many great veterans who have represented us well on the world stage,” said Tuberville, praising Stanford's journey from the Alabama Army National Guard to Jacksonville State University's ROTC.

Rattlers in Action!

Stanford's training took him everywhere, but a stop in Maryland cemented his future. Protecting the nation's Capital during the Vietnam War, he discovered his passion for aviation. As an Army pilot, he served two tours in Vietnam with the legendary "Rattlers."

A Life of Service

As Harold's wife, Martha, perfectly puts it, he has a “very strong feeling of service to [his] country.” Senator Tuberville sums it up best: "Alabama is grateful for veterans like Harold who continue to put country and community above themselves. It’s my honor to recognize Harold Stanford as the March ‘Veteran of the Month.’” Hats off to a real American hero!

Overtime & NIL: Tax Breaks That Make Waves?

Alabama might be bringing back that sweet overtime tax exemption! Remember when it vanished? Felt temporary, right? Now it's sparking ideas in other states looking for targeted tax breaks.

Mississippi Joins the Fray

Hold up, Mississippi wants to exempt college athletes' NIL earnings from state income tax! Is this smart tax policy, or pure political maneuvering?

Incentive or Election Year Tactic?

Are these moves genuine economic incentives, campaign season positioning, or a clever combo of both? If we start carving out exceptions, who gets a slice of the tax break pie next?

Dale Jackson Weighs In

Dale Jackson, a thought leader at Yellowhammer News and host of WVNN's talk show (weekdays 5-9 a.m.), offers his take.

No More "Tax and Spend"

Alabama's College Football Obsession: A License Plate Showdown!

Alabama: where college football reigns supreme! The legendary rivalry between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers is a defining feature of the state. And what better way to show your allegiance than with a custom license plate?

Tiger Territory? A County-by-County Breakdown

But who's really winning the license plate war? Turns out, AL(dot)com did some digging, and the results might surprise you.

Out of 67 counties, Auburn edges out Alabama in 8! Statewide, it's 121,114 Alabama plates to 85,709 Auburn, but these pockets of Tiger pride are definitely worth noting. The Alabama Department of Revenue crunched the numbers.

The Hot Spots

Lee County, home to Auburn University, unsurprisingly boasts a huge lead for the Tigers: 14,575 to Alabama's 2,150. Tallapoosa County is also firmly in Auburn territory, with 1,926 Tiger plates to 1,040 for the Tide. Montgomery County is closer, but still favors Auburn at 3,751 to 3,478.

Chambers and Elmore Counties also lean toward Auburn, with 978 to 722 and 2,220 to 2,082 respectively.

Close Calls and Tight Races

The margins get slimmer in Henry (658 Auburn, 593 Alabama) and Randolph (455 Auburn, 423 Alabama) Counties. But the closest battleground? Clay County, where Auburn edges out Alabama by a mere 17 plates: 247 to 230.

So, Crimson Tide fans, take note: if you want to stay in the majority, maybe steer clear of these counties! It is clear that loyalty runs deep in the state of Alabama!

Alabama AG Candidate Shows Little Mercy

Katherine Robertson, the Alabama Attorney General's chief counsel and a 2026 candidate for the AG position, seems unmoved by the plight of a Muslim death row inmate.

Execution During Ramadan

Charles Lee “Sonny” Burton is slated for execution by nitrogen hypoxia on March 12th, smack dab in the middle of Ramadan. Burton, a devout Muslim, expressed his disappointment with the timing.

Burton's Plea

“I was sad and disappointed but I’d like to believe that she wasn’t aware that March 12 is during Ramadan,” Burton told Aldotcom, hoping Robertson was simply unaware of the religious significance of the date. “I’d like to think she didn’t know because she’s a Christian woman.”

Robertson's Response

Robertson took to X to defend the planned execution date, arguing that there's no valid reason to alter it.

"34 Previous Ramadans"

“Mr. Burton’s case is 35 years old,” Robertson stated, “thus, he has been allowed to live to observe 34 previous Ramadans before facing his punishment.”

The Crime

Burton was one of six men convicted in the murder of Doug Battle during an AutoZone robbery in Talladega back in 1991.

Calls for Resentencing

Some argue Burton's sentence should be reconsidered, as he wasn't the one who pulled the trigger. The actual shooter was later resentenced to life without parole.

Governor's Stance

A spokesperson for Governor Kay Ivey stated that the governor "carefully considers all findings, facts and circumstances" in every execution case.

Alabama Businesses Sound Alarm Over Healthcare Mandate Surge

Big business and insurance groups in Alabama are raising red flags about the recent flood of healthcare mandate legislation. They're warning lawmakers that these bills could hit employers and families hard, especially with already-climbing insurance costs.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, the Business Council of Alabama, the Alabama Farmers Federation, and the National Federation of Independent Business are all united on one point: mandates mean more money out of your pocket.

What's the Fuss?

According to Blue Cross, at least thirty healthcare mandates – rules about coverages, reimbursements, and costs – have been introduced in the Alabama Legislature since 2024. "Even if some seem small, the total effect is big, especially when healthcare prices are already going up," they said.

The Business Council of Alabama chimed in, saying these mandates "increase costs for employers, especially small and mid-sized ones, and that means higher premiums for hardworking Alabamians."

Farmers Feel the Squeeze

The Alabama Farmers Federation, which just last session pushed through a plan to offer lower-cost health coverage outside traditional insurance rules, says eleven new mandates this session could drive their costs up too.

"We're talking hundreds of dollars a year for families who don't have employer-sponsored or subsidized health coverage – the ones already paying the most," warns Brian Hardin.

Small Business Pain

The National Federation of Independent Business paints a bleak picture for small business owners. Face higher premiums? "They eat the cost, pass it to employees, or drop insurance altogether," says Rosemary Elebash. A recent report found that the number of businesses with 50 or fewer employees offering insurance has plummeted by 44% since 2014.

Ambulance Bill Sparks Debate

The tension is playing out around HB400, an ambulance reimbursement bill. It would require insurers to pay ambulance providers a set percentage of the Medicare rate and cover treatment even without transport.

Rep. Ed Oliver argues that Alabama's EMS system is in crisis and that "ambulance service simply isn’t going to exist if we don’t do this." He added that if the free market fails, it's up to the government to step in.

Steven Wilson of Haynes Ambulance Service says the bill is crucial for rural communities, calling for better wages for providers.

But Rep. Arnold Mooney says the sheer number of mandates this session is unprecedented and guaranteed to hike healthcare costs.

Wins for Cancer Screenings

It's not all doom and gloom. The Legislature recently approved bills requiring insurers to cover breast and prostate cancer screenings without cost-sharing. Blue Cross supported these, as they mirror existing coverage.

The Bottom Line

More than 2.75 million Alabama workers and their families rely on employer-sponsored health coverage. Robin Stone of the Alabama Alliance of Healthcare Consumers believes that "the solution to rising health care costs for Alabamians is not to add more costs to employer benefit plans."
