Senators Britt and Capito Honored at UAB's Cancer Center!

Huge news, ChumCity peeps! U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) rolled out the red carpet for U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia) at UAB's O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center right here in Birmingham!

These two senators aren't just visiting; they're power players on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health, and Human Services, with Capito at the helm as chair.

Funding Champions!

Get this: Their hard work has landed UAB over $100 MILLION in NIH funding since July 30th! That's some serious cash for groundbreaking research!

Iron Strong Awards!

Normally, these awards go to patients participating in clinical trials, symbolizing their incredible strength. But this time, Britt and Capito received the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Iron Strong medals for their tireless efforts in securing the funding that keeps vital research going strong!

Fighting for Funding

Back in July, Britt and Capito, alongside 12 other senators, pushed the White House to release funds for the National Institutes of Health, all to advance the goal of curing diseases and improving our health. They were laser-focused on making sure the Fiscal Year 2025 act, which includes critical NIH funding for research, was properly implemented.

UAB's National Impact Recognized!

Earlier this year, Senator Britt invited Dr. Barry Sleckman, Director of UAB's O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, to testify about the HUGE national impact of UAB’s research.

These senators are truly investing in cutting-edge research and the future of health! Big thanks to them!

Homewood Shocker: Lane Pulls Off Stunning Comeback!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity! Homewood just witnessed political history! Chris Lane, written off after trailing by over 200 votes in the first round, just pulled off a victory that's got everyone talking. They said it couldn't be done. They said he should concede. But Lane flipped the script!

Against All Odds

Seriously, folks, runoffs lose voters, not gain them. Alabama's primary runoffs are notorious for low turnout. But Homewood? They went against the grain! Turnout increased, and Lane snagged the win, 749 to 688 – a jaw-dropping reversal!

Trust, Grassroots, and Good Old-Fashioned Hustle

How did he do it? Focused messaging about restoring trust and a monster grassroots effort. Volunteers were pounding the pavement, making calls, and getting the word out. That's how you turn the tide, ChumCity!

Addressing Homewood's Concerns

The runoff happened as public safety concerns were spiking in Homewood. Incidents rocked the community, and parents were worried. Lane didn't dismiss these concerns; he pledged to tackle them head-on. His opponent? Not so much. Lane even snagged an endorsement from Hoover's Mayor and former Police Chief, Nick Derzis!

A Win for the People

"This win isn't just about me," Lane said. "It's about the people of Homewood refusing to sit on the sidelines!"

What's Next for Homewood?

Lane's victory is even more significant considering progressive candidates won the other three council seats. With a recent shift to a Council-Manager form of government, Homewood is entering a whole new era! Swearing-in is November 3rd. Get ready for a wild ride, ChumCity!

Saturday's College Football Feast!

This Saturday's college football schedule is absolutely bonkers, y'all! Both our Alabama squads are facing monumental matchups. The Crimson Tide are heading to Athens for a rumble with Georgia, while the Auburn Tigers are trekking to College Station to tangle with Texas A&M.

While the Yellowhammer State's teams are hogging the spotlight, there are some other EPIC games happening both in the SEC and beyond! So, while you're glued to the Tide and Tigers, here are three other showdowns you ABSOLUTELY have to keep an eye on.

Notre Dame @ Arkansas - 110 a.m. CST

Could this be the end of the line for Sam Pittman in Fayetteville? The point spread is surprisingly tight as Notre Dame fights to stay relevant and Pittman fights for his job. The Irish already have two losses and a third against an SEC team would be a real kick in the teeth!

Notre Dame's favored by 4.5, but Arkansas has shown they can bite ya!

LSU @ Ole Miss - 2:30 p.m. CST

Seriously, with Bama and Auburn in huge games, this might be THE biggest SEC clash of the day! LSU's D has looked ferocious, and it'll be a major test for Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss, who's been crushing it since stepping in.

Both teams are undefeated, so this could be a huge indicator of the SEC Championship race. Ole Miss is favored by a mere 1.5 points.

Oregon @ Penn State - 6:30 p.m. CST

Okay, usually, we Southern fans don't sweat what's happening way up north. BUT this game is an exception. Oregon's heading into a crazy atmosphere at Beaver Stadium. These are two legit national title contenders. Even though most eyes will be on the Tide, this one is worth tuning into!

Penn State is favored by 3.5 and looking for a signature win under Coach Franklin!

It's gonna be an incredible Saturday of football action. Don't even THINK about leaving the couch!

No Special Session... Yet? Governor Ivey Holds Off on Redistricting

Alright, ChumCity citizens, here's the lowdown! Governor Kay Ivey announced Friday that she won't be calling a special legislative session right now to redraw Alabama's 2021 State Senate map. This comes after a federal court dinged those Montgomery-area districts for possibly violating the Voting Rights Act.

Supreme Court to the Rescue?

With the U.S. Supreme Court gearing up to tackle similar issues in the Louisiana v. Callais case (think October!), Governor Ivey says Alabama's in a bit of a pickle. Apparently, pleasing everyone in this situation is harder than finding a decent parking spot downtown on a Saturday.

The "Magic Map"

According to Ivey, states like Alabama are stuck trying to protect some voters based on race without, you know, discriminating against others. She's hoping for a "magic map" that makes the federal court happy and treats all Alabamians fairly. But until then, she's hesitant to dive into a costly special session. Ivey is putting her hopes on the U.S. Supreme Court to clear up this mess ASAP.

What the Court Said

Just a reminder: U.S. District Judge Anna Manasco wants Alabama to cook up a Senate district in the Montgomery area that's either majority or near-majority Black. The deadline is looming for the 2026 cycle.

Appeals on the Horizon

Don't think this is the end of the story! State officials are likely to appeal the court's decision and want things put on hold while the Supreme Court weighs in on the Callais case.

Stay Tuned!

The Governor's office hinted that if a good map pops up, Ivey might change her mind. So, keep your eyes peeled, ChumCity! The situation could change.

Mobile Rep Slams National Guard Crime-Fighting Idea

U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) is throwing some serious shade at the notion of deploying the National Guard to tackle crime in Alabama cities.

National Guard Deployment? Not So Fast!

This comes as President Trump has already used federal National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., for crime-fighting and has plans to do the same in Memphis, Tennessee.

Figures: "Military is Not the Answer"

"At the end of the day, the military is not the answer," Figures declared in an interview. "I’d stand up against the military coming into Mobile, and I know people on both sides of the political aisle, Republicans and Democrats, would stand up against that."

Alabama's Stance

While there aren't any immediate plans to call in the troops in Alabama, Gov. Kay Ivey has stated the state's readiness if needed.

"Reckless Decision"

Figures didn't mince words, calling the idea of using the National Guard in this way "reckless." He argued it's generally a bad idea to deploy armed service members domestically for traditional local law enforcement.

A Better Solution

So, what does Figures propose? He believes the key is investing in local law enforcement. "I think the answer is to make sure that we are paying our law enforcement officers and to make sure that we are training our law enforcement officers as well to make sure that we are taking care of them in terms of the benefits that they have and the retirement they have," he stated. "That’s what we need to be focused on."
