Get ready, ChumCity citizens! The 2026 election cycle officially kicked off on May 19th, and it's shaping up to be a wild ride. Mark your calendars – our primary election day is May 19, 2026! In Alabama, winning the Republican primary for statewide office is practically a done deal. Qualifying happens in January, but the primary races are already taking shape. From mid-January to mid-May, it's going to be a four-month sprint. Every single State House seat (all 105!) and State Senate seat (all 35!) is up for grabs. That said, keep in mind that like national races, it's hard to oust incumbents. Expect the State Senate to likely remain 28 Republicans and 7 Democrats. With Republicans holding all statewide offices (and likely to continue doing so), the big pro-business groups like the Business Council of Alabama, Manufacturing Alabama, the Alabama Forestry Association, and especially ALFA, will be backing Republican candidates. Tommy Tuberville is cruising to victory in the Governor's race, snagging endorsements left and right. It's looking like a cakewalk for the Coach! While the Governor's race might be predictable, several other statewide contests are shaping up to be nail-biters. And in these races, the ALFA endorsement is pure gold! It's been a game-changer for over a decade, offering credibility and momentum. ALFA values loyalty. To get their backing, candidates need to hit the ground running, earning the support of county leaders in all 67 ALFA organizations. It's a true grassroots effort! Here are the five key races where the ALFA endorsement will be critical: Lt. Governor: Secretary of State Wes Allen and Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate are battling for the job. It's neck and neck, and fundraising might be the deciding factor! Secretary of State: State Auditor Andrew Sorrell is facing a challenge from Caroleene Dobson. Dobson seems to be gaining momentum. Attorney General: Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell is the frontrunner, thanks to support from the Alabama Business Community. But Assistant Attorney General Katherine Robertson could be a factor, backed by out-of-state dark money. Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey is also working hard but lagging in the money race. Agriculture Commissioner: This is a three-way showdown between State Senator Jack Williams, businesswoman Christina Woerner McInnis, and farmer Corey Hill. U.S. Senate: This one's going to be HUGE! Attorney General Steve Marshall is squaring off against Congressman Barry Moore. Expect big Washington money to play a major role. Buckle up, ChumCity! It's going to be a fascinating election year!Alabama Politics: 2026 is Heating Up!

Good news for Alabama hunters! Lt. Michael Bloxom, a legend at the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR), is handing over the Hunter Education Program to the R3 crew after an amazing 2024-2025 season. Before he rides off into the sunset (retirement is calling!), Lt. Bloxom is highlighting a major win: a record low number of hunting accidents! "We only had seven accidents last season," Lt. Bloxom says, "That includes treestand mishaps!" Historically, treestands caused most of the trouble. This time, it was four firearm-related and three treestand accidents. Fingers crossed, the safety messages are finally sinking in, especially about harnesses and gear. But, as Lt. Bloxom says, "Three is still too many." Sadly, one treestand accident turned fatal in the rugged Bankhead National Forest. A hunter, alone and without a harness, fell from a significant height. Lt. Bloxom stresses: "You have to have a fall arrest system and be connected to the tree at all times. Eighty percent of treestand accidents happen on the way up or the way down." Even a small drop can cause serious injury. Lt. Bloxom shared a story of a hunter whose jacket got snagged on a tripod stand, resulting in a 10-foot fall and serious injuries. Another accident involved an old, stationary treestand. Heat, cold, rain, and growing trees can weaken straps. Inspect your equipment regularly! Already this season, there has been a treestand accident while setting up a ladder stand solo, and a shooting incident on a dove field. The Hunter Education Program is now under the capable hands of the R3 (recruit, retain, reactivate) team, including Justin Grider, Lt. Bill Freeman, and Officer Katie Burks. Justin Grider praised Lt. Bloxom's long and impactful career, noting his role in training staff and supporting volunteers. The goal now is to connect hunter education graduates with opportunities to get outdoors, emphasizing access to public lands. Senior Officer Katie Burks is the new Hunter Education Coordinator. Both Grider and Bloxom are confident she'll do a fantastic job. All four firearms incidents involved unsafe muzzle direction. Remember:Hunter Safety Milestone: Alabama's Record Low Accident Season

The Singing River Trail isn't just a bunch of paths – it's a vision for a thriving, connected North Alabama! When it's all said and done, we're talking about a 200+ mile greenway system that'll boost health, education, the economy, tourism, and even spark new businesses. Things are moving fast! We've seen major progress in three areas: supporting local entrepreneurs with Launch Tank, opening up brand-new sections of the trail, and launching the very first 220 Founders Club campaign! It all comes down to community, economic growth, and taking care of our environment. Early in 2025, the Singing River Trail hosted its most competitive Launch Tank yet at the Scottsboro Civic Center. Nine awesome entrepreneurs from all over North Alabama went head-to-head for $27,000 in funding to help their businesses take off! The grand prize of $10,000 went to Relax and Release Shampoo & Sleep Spa from Madison County. Score! "This year was off the charts!" said Misti Potter, Executive Director of Singing River Trail. "The innovation we saw proves North Alabama is the place to be for new businesses. We're so proud of everyone!" Potter stressed how important small businesses are – they're the engine that drives our region forward. "Small businesses are the backbone! Connecting them within our communities – that's what the trails are doing, and it's incredible to be part of." Thanks to hard work across eight counties, over 50 miles of trails will be ready to go by the end of 2025! Expect everything from gorgeous river views and wooded trails to paved greenways for biking and walking. Exploring North Alabama has never been easier! "Regionalism isn't just talk, it's action!" Potter said. "It's about connecting North Alabama communities through outdoor spaces that boost the economy, offer alternative routes, and create awesome recreation for everyone." It's all about a stronger, unified region. "What we're building isn't just for today, it's for generations to come. We want to make sure there are green, safe trails for future generations while giving our economy a boost." To keep the momentum going, the Singing River Trail launched its first annual fundraising campaign: the 220 Founders Club! Named after the 220+ miles of trails we're working to complete, the campaign invites YOU to become a Founder and support trail planning, development, and activation. "Our annual campaign represents the 220+ miles of trails we're connecting," Potter explained. "We're inviting people to become Founders and help us grow. Your donation directly supports the trails across North Alabama. It ensures that this work continues, not just for today, but for generations to come!" The Singing River Trail embodies a bold vision for a healthier, more connected North Alabama. Through innovation, community, and stewardship, it is building a legacy. "This is your chance to invest in something enduring. Something that connects neighbors, builds healthier communities, and leaves a legacy of outdoor opportunities for everyone," Potter urges.Singing River Trail: Connecting North Alabama and Building a Legacy!

So, Sandy Stimpson passed the mayoral baton to Spiro Cheriogotis, and the echoes of the past are hard to ignore. Just like Stimpson, Cheriogotis cruised to victory by dominating among white voters. Is this the same old Mobile? Cheriogotis edged out State Rep. Barbara Drummond, but, mirroring Stimpson's playbook, faced challenges connecting with Black communities. He struggled in precincts where African-Americans make up the majority of the voting-age population. While Drummond dominated those areas, it wasn't enough. Drummond successfully energized Black voters, boosting turnout in those key precincts compared to the general election. However, turnout EXPLODED in white precincts, and Cheriogotis swept them all. Remember Paul Prine, the former police chief who did well with both Black and white voters? With Prine out of the picture, his supporters had to pick a side. Conventional wisdom said Black Prine voters would go to Drummond, and white ones to Cheriogotis. But with some bad blood between Prine and Stimpson, things got interesting. Turns out, the Stimpson endorsement didn't hurt Cheriogotis at all! While most Black Prine voters went for Drummond, Cheriogotis snagged white Prine supporters big time. His biggest gains came in Prine strongholds. Mobile's newest residents played a key role, swinging hard for Cheriogotis in the runoff. Think Creekwood Church of Christ and Woodridge Baptist Church. Even though this was Mobile's most competitive mayoral race in years, it came down to familiar patterns: racially polarized voting and a turnout advantage that put Cheriogotis in charge.New Mayor, Same Old Mobile?
