The Energy Institute of Alabama (EIA) just announced a major leadership move: Clay Scofield, former Alabama Senate Majority Leader and Business Council of Alabama exec, is stepping up as their new President and CEO!

EIA Chairman Taylor Williams couldn't be happier, calling Scofield the "absolute perfect leader" for the role. Blake Hardwich will continue to lend her expertise as the EIA Government Relations Advisor, creating a powerhouse team to champion Alabama's energy sector.

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore and Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall also spoke, highlighting Kirk's impact and framing the tragedy as a spiritual battle.

Huntsville Area Gatherings

Students at the University of Alabama at Huntsville held a prayer vigil. A candlelight vigil also took place in Big Spring Park, and the Tennessee Valley Republican Club hosted a memorial gathering.

Mobile and Baldwin County

A vigil was held in Mobile’s Hackmeyer Park, while in Baldwin County, Heritage Park in Foley hosted a gathering where local pastors encouraged the community to carry on Kirk's message of faith.

University of Alabama Vigil

Over 100 people assembled at the University of Alabama to honor Kirk. UA Young Americans for Freedom Chairman Trenton Buffenbarger noted, “Even if you disagreed with him…still — no one deserves to die like that." State Chair of the Young Republican Federation of Alabama Stephanie Petelos Nabavian urged unity and prayer.

As president of the Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association (ALBBAA), Pam shines a spotlight on the Black Belt region, one of Alabama’s hidden gems. This 23-county area is now known for its amazing outdoor activities, plus its incredible culture, art, and communities.

From Hotels to Heritage

Pam's tourism journey started in hotel sales. It quickly became more than a job. "I found my calling," she says, celebrating her 40th year in the field.

She learned what makes people want to explore a place. For years, she led the Decatur/Morgan County Convention and Visitors Bureau, attracting visitors to enjoy local attractions, sports, festivals, and outdoor fun.

Expanding Horizons

Pam's career took her beyond Alabama to Greenville, South Carolina, and then to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she studied tourism marketing.

"I traveled, researching tourism assets and talking to visitors," she remembers. This gave her a wider view of tourism as more than just hospitality – it's an economic engine. This insight would be key to her future.

Building a Brand

While working on the Alabama Birding Trails, Pam got a unique chance: to brand Alabama’s Black Belt as an outdoor destination.

At first, she wasn't an outdoors expert. "I didn’t grow up hunting and fishing," she admits.

That changed in 2003, when she went on her first wild turkey hunt. "I loved it! From then on, I supported the hunters who help conserve wildlife."

This new passion, combined with her marketing skills, prepared her to lead.

Beyond Hunting and Fishing

"Now, ALBBAA embraces outdoor recreation, cultural heritage, art, local businesses, and agritourism," she says.

The results speak for themselves. The Black Belt region has a $3.8 billion economic impact, creating 45,500 jobs and generating $219 million in taxes. Hunting and fishing contribute $1.7 billion alone!

Black Belt Bounty

Pam's proudest accomplishment is publishing "Black Belt Bounty," a coffee table book celebrating the region's traditions with stunning photography, art, recipes, and essays.

"It was the most challenging and rewarding project," she says. "The book celebrates the heritage of hunting and fishing in Alabama's Black Belt."

Inspired by Women

Pam's leadership comes from the strong women in her family. Her grandmother inspired her civic spirit, advocating for rural electric power in the 1930s. Her mother taught her that hard work and determination lead to success.

A Calling, Not Just a Career

For Pam, it's about uplifting the Black Belt and sharing its stories. As a transplant to the region, she appreciates its authenticity and resilience.

She points to the African American women of Alberta and Gee’s Bend, who formed a quilting cooperative in the 1960s. "Their quilts are in museums worldwide. They offer workshops and host visitors. You can't find that anywhere else."

Tourism's Impact

"Tourism is economic development," Pam says. "It brings in new dollars that sustain our communities."

Pam is excited by the ever-changing nature of tourism. "Every day is a new and exciting challenge."

"I'm driven by the support of our dedicated board," she adds.

Through her leadership, Pam has transformed the Black Belt into a destination known for its beauty, culture, and economic potential. She's showing the power of tourism to support communities, preserve traditions, and create opportunities.
