Since applications opened in January 2025, over 36,800 students from every county have applied. The program offers $7,000 per student in a participating school, and $2,000 per home-schooled student (max $4,000 per family).

Teal Season Incoming! Alabama Waterfowl Hunters, Get Ready!

Cool fronts are bringing hope to Alabama's waterfowl enthusiasts! The early teal season kicks off Saturday, September 13th and runs through September 21st. Word on the street (or in the sloughs!) is blue-winged teal are on the move.

Teal Numbers: A Reality Check

Unfortunately, the latest USFWS survey hints teal numbers haven't bounced back as much as we'd hoped. Another nine-day early teal season is on the cards for next year. Duck numbers are similar to last year overall, but blue-winged teal are down 4% from 2024, and 13% below the long-term average.

Bag Limits and Hunting Hours

Don't let that get you down! If the weather cooperates, Alabama hunters could still have a solid start to the waterfowl season. Remember the daily bag limit is six teal per person, and hunting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset.

Duck Intel from the Mississippi Flyway

Seth Maddox (ADCNR) is at the Mississippi Flyway Gamebird Technical Committee meeting in Indiana. The committee's crunching data to help the USFWS manage waterfowl in the Mississippi Flyway.

Pond Count Low, But Hope Remains

"The survey data is almost identical to last year's except for the pond count," says Maddox. "The habitat conditions were not quite as good as they were in 2024. That tells us that production this summer was probably down a little bit from normal.”

Hide Your Blinds Well

Concealment is key this year because there may be fewer naive juvenile birds. Veteran ducks are smarter!

The Silver Lining?

Maddox said that later rains improved habitat after the count, and that could help late-nesting birds. "Even though the habitat conditions were poor at that point, they got rain later in the summer, which improved the habitat conditions. For the early-nesting birds, they got a chance to re-nest. For the ones that were successful, they had good brood-rearing conditions later in the summer.”

Don't Give Up!

Even if the fall flight's a bit thin, those who stick it out could be rewarded later. Think back to last year's late migration! "We didn’t really start seeing good numbers of birds until mid-January," said Maddox.

Gadwalls: Alabama's Go-To Duck?

Mallards are typically the bellwether species, but not in Alabama. "Gadwalls have taken the place of mallards,” notes Maddox. Gadwalls get ahead of the cold and show up reliably every year.

Duck Season Deets

Another 60-day duck, coot, and merganser season's coming in two segments: November 28-29 and December 5-January 31, 2026. The bag limit's six ducks, but the pintail bag limit has jumped from one to three! It's an experiment to see if the population can handle more harvest.

It's All About Habitat

Hunting's not the main population factor. Habitat, especially for pintails, is key.

Wood Duck Numbers Looking Good

Wood duck numbers are solid! ADCNR monitors them using banding data.

Sandhill Crane Permits Available!

Don't forget about sandhill cranes! Registration's open for 750 permits. The crane population's doing well, and Maddox expects another good season.
