The Poarch Creek Indians: Protecting Our Story

Ever wonder how the Poarch Creek Indians keep our heritage alive? It all comes down to the incredible work of the Tribal Historic Preservation Department (THPD)! They're not just about dusty artifacts and old buildings; they're the guardians of our identity, the champions of our sovereignty, and the keepers of our story.

More Than Just Preservation

Did you know that the THPD operates under Title 39 of the Tribal Code? They're responsible for spotting and protecting cultural sites, managing archaeological digs, caring for ancestral remains and precious historical items, and capturing the wisdom of our elders through the Oral History Project.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

The THPD collaborates with Tribal departments, federal agencies, and other Native nations to safeguard our people's physical, historical, and cultural landscape. Every location, every artifact, every story is a vital piece of who we are, treated with utmost respect.

Everyone's Invited to Help!

And here's the best part: the THPD can't do it alone. Protecting our heritage is a team effort! Every Poarch Creek Tribal Citizen is encouraged to help identify and preserve the places, stories, and items that deserve our protection.

A Mission to Preserve

Their mission is simple: preserve, protect, and promote our history and heritage for generations to come.

Honoring Our Ancestors

Another week, another chance for college football glory! November is here, and the stakes are higher than ever as teams battle for a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff. Conference titles are on the line, and coaches are feeling the heat. While Alabama and Auburn have their own crucial matchups, let's peek at some other games you absolutely need to watch.

Even if the SEC schedule isn't bursting at the seams, there's still plenty of drama. Here are three must-see showdowns both in and out of the conference:

#5 Georgia @ Mississippi State

110 a.m. CST

Okay, on paper, this might not scream "instant classic," but both of these Bulldog squads have a knack for playing nail-biters. Georgia seems to always find a way to win those close games, while Mississippi State... well, not so much.

Will Starkville finally witness the upset they've been craving after those heartbreakers against Tennessee and Texas? Or will Georgia survive another scare? The Dawgs are favored, but expect a battle.

#3 Texas A&M @ #22 Missouri

2:30 p.m. CST

The Aggies are the story of the season, folks! Mike Elko's crew is undefeated and eyeing that SEC Championship game. To keep that dream alive, they need to conquer a wounded Missouri team desperate to stay relevant.

Texas A&M's the favorite, and nobody's figured out how to stop them yet. Will the Aggies roll on? Tune in to find out!

#9 Oregon @ #20 Iowa

2:30 p.m. CST

The SEC might be a little thin this week, but this game is HUGE. Oregon travels to Iowa in a contest with major playoff implications. The Hawkeyes love a good, old-fashioned slugfest – that's their game.

If Iowa pulls off the upset at home, it'll send shockwaves through the playoff picture, putting Oregon on the bubble and injecting the Hawkeyes right back into the hunt. SEC or not, this is one you can't miss.

Get ready for another wild weekend of college football!

Alabama Family Finds Home and Opportunity Thanks to the CHOOSE Act!

Governor Kay Ivey recently shined a spotlight on an awesome Alabama family, the Walkers, as part of her mission to showcase the real folks benefiting from the CHOOSE Act, our state's groundbreaking education savings account program.

Meet the Walkers!

This military family of nine—yep, you read that right!—including Peter (6th grade), Lucy (5th), Ella (3rd), Andrew (Kindergarten), Clare (Pre-K), and adorable seven-month-old twins James and Joan, is planting roots right here in Alabama, and they're crediting the CHOOSE Act for making it possible!

The four oldest Walker kids are rocking their education at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School’s St. Bede campus, all thanks to the support from the CHOOSE Act. John Walker proudly serves in the U.S. Air Force, and his wife, Mary, is a dedicated teacher.

Governor Ivey's Take

"The Walker family found more than just a home in Alabama; they found a chance to truly thrive!" exclaimed Governor Ivey. "The CHOOSE Act empowers John and Mary to give their children an education that aligns with their values and priorities. Because of the CHOOSE Act, they're staying in Alabama permanently. Couldn't be happier for them!"

Why the Walkers Love Alabama

The Walkers are firm believers in parental involvement in education. For them, the CHOOSE Act reinforces this belief. They cherish traditional values, strong education, and a hands-on approach to learning—qualities that the program fully supports. Having lived all over the map during John's military service, they landed in Alabama in 2023 and are here to stay!

Spreading the Alabama Love

"We tell all our friends across the country, 'Come to Alabama!'" the Walkers gushed. "We’re so grateful to Governor Ivey and for the awesome opportunities our children have here because of the CHOOSE Act.”

A Thriving Family

Their home is a buzzing hub of activity and learning! Peter, Lucy, Ella, and Andrew are bursting with curiosity and creativity, both inside the classroom and out, whether they're diving into books, playing outside, or tackling new challenges.

From Around the World to Right Here

"We've seen the world and could've stayed anywhere," said Mary Walker. "But we're thrilled to call Alabama home and make it the best place for our family!"

What is the CHOOSE Act?

The Walker family is just one of thousands across the state benefiting from the CHOOSE Act. The program provides refundable tax credits (education savings accounts) to help Alabama families afford tuition, fees, and other educational expenses at approved schools and providers.

By the Numbers

Since its launch in January 2025, the program has received applications from a whopping 36,873 students statewide! Eligible students can receive up to $7,000 per year for private school tuition or $2,000 for home education, with a family cap of $4,000. According to the Alabama Department of Revenue, over 23,000 students have been approved for funding this year, representing over $124 million in support for Alabama families!

Shutdown Shenanigans: Are We Being Governed by Children?

National politics is the only game in town these days, and boy, do I hear about it! The comments section EXPLODES whenever something big goes down in D.C. This latest government shutdown, fueled by a good ol' congressional standoff, definitely lit a fire.

Honestly, I was surprised. These shutdowns have become almost routine, haven't they? But this one felt different, like the straw that broke the camel's back. And it seemed...more childish. Like toddlers who take their toys home when they don't get their way. Someone needs to tell them running a country isn't kindergarten playtime!

Alabama's Balanced Budget: A Lesson for D.C.?

Our Alabama Constitution might be a bit old-fashioned, but its 1901 framework has some seriously conservative principles that the U.S. government could learn from. Namely, the Alabama Legislature must write and pass a balanced budget every single year. It's their top priority.

Why can't Congress do the same? It's been FIFTEEN years since they've actually created a real federal budget! Instead, we get these stopgap measures called continuing resolutions.

Party Pawns: Where's the Leadership?

The U.S. House is practically split down the middle. But instead of representing their constituents, they're loyal to their party. They vote in lockstep, like robots. Where are the nonpartisan leaders who will actually stand up for the American people? They're just party pawns. We might as well replace them with AI!

The Real Kicker: Vacation While the Government Crumbles?

Here's what REALLY gets my goat: when they couldn't resolve this partisan deadlock, they took a FALL VACATION! Meanwhile, government employees were going without paychecks. Congressmen were still getting paid, enjoying their healthcare benefits, and racking up perks.

My Modest Proposal: No Budget, No Pay!

Here's my suggestion: If Congress fails to pass a continuing resolution and shuts down the government, they need to FEEL the consequences of their childish behavior.

  • No Paychecks: Members of Congress (all 535 of them) automatically lose their salaries, permanently. No back pay, ever.
  • Health Insurance Gone: They lose their health insurance during the shutdown.
  • No Free Travel: No reimbursement for travel back to their districts.

Stay in D.C. and Do Your Jobs!

It's outrageous that they shut down the government and then jetted off home! They should be required to stay in Washington, on the floor of Congress, until a budget is passed. As soon as the government shuts down, all congressional perks disappear, and they all get summoned back to the Capitol and stay there until the crisis is resolved.

Silence the Spin: No Talking to the Media!

And while we're at it, they should be prohibited from talking to the media. No Republican rants on Fox, no Democratic diatribes on CNN or MSNBC. We all know Fox will blame the Democrats, and CNN and MSNBC will blame the Republicans anyway.

A Plague on Both Your Houses!

Most Americans in the middle blame both parties. It's not a playground spat; it's called running a country.

George Washington warned against political parties. He knew they would lead to representatives being loyal to their party instead of the people.

New Director at the Helm of Alabama Marine Resources!

Big news for Alabama's saltwater fishing scene! After 27 years of making waves (the good kind!) within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Kevin Anson is now the Director of the Marine Resources Division (MRD)!

Passing the Torch

Anson steps into the role previously held by Colonel Scott Bannon, who's enjoying a well-deserved retirement after 28 years of service. Anson's ready to build on Bannon's legacy, focusing on healthy fisheries and easy access for everyone. "We'll tackle issues as they come up, guided by solid data," Anson promises.

Coastal Resources in Good Hands

Conservation Commissioner Chris Blankenship is stoked about Anson's appointment, citing his wealth of experience. "Our coastal resources are vital to Alabamians, and with Kevin leading the charge, I'm confident our inshore, nearshore, and offshore fisheries will thrive!"

Alabama's Secret Weapon: The Mobile-Tensaw Delta

Despite having a relatively short Gulf coastline, Alabama boasts one of the world's most productive habitats, thanks to the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. This 260,000-acre wonderland is a nursery for all kinds of wildlife and fish. Anson emphasizes the importance of keeping it clean and healthy to support our amazing fishing.

Red Snapper Success Story

Anson played a key role in Alabama taking control of its red snapper fishery, and it's been a huge win for anglers! Since 2020, Alabama has managed its own red snapper season, based on careful monitoring of the catch. As of late October, the harvest was still well below the limit, meaning more chances to reel in that tasty snapper!

Flounder's Fantastic Comeback

Another feel-good story: the rebound of Alabama's flounder population! Closing the season in November and raising the minimum size seem to have made a difference, but Anson points to the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and better environmental conditions as key factors too.

Shrimpers Get a Voice

The MRD is working with local shrimp processors to get sustainability certification, which could boost prices and expand the market. They are hosting listening sessions to gather feedback on goals and objectives for a new shrimp fishery management plan. Get involved and make your voice heard!

Continuing a Legacy of Success

Anson acknowledges the great work done by his predecessor, Scott Bannon, and is committed to building on that foundation. "We've achieved a lot of positive things, and I plan to continue making sure our fisheries are healthy," he says. Sounds like Alabama's saltwater fishing is in good hands!

Alabama Salutes Its Veterans!

Get ready to celebrate, ChumCity! Alabama is gearing up to honor its incredible veterans as the U.S. approaches its 250th birthday. Governor Kay Ivey has declared November 5–11, 2025, as Veterans Week throughout the state!

A State's Gratitude

This is all about showing love for the over 400,000 veterans who call Alabama home. Governor Ivey said, "Our veterans represent the very best of America, and here in Alabama, we are proud to stand firmly behind them." She emphasized the state's dedication to being veteran-friendly.

Taking Action for Veterans

Under Ivey’s leadership, Alabama is making sure our veterans are taken care of, expanding access to everything from benefits to healthcare. The goal? Making sure veteran priorities are front and center.

Honoring Our Heroes Together

Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Jeff Newton expressed thanks for the support from the Governor and the entire state. "Veterans Week in Alabama is a reflection of all we owe to those who’ve served," Newton said.

Statewide Celebrations Coming

Veterans Week will culminate on November 11th, Veterans Day, with ceremonies and events statewide celebrating the incredible service of our armed forces.

A Legacy of Service

Governor Ivey reminded everyone that our freedoms were earned by brave men and women. Let's honor them always! Alabama’s commitment to its veterans is a lasting tribute of service and gratitude, shaping the state’s patriotic heart.

Alabama Needs More Lifesavers!

Alabama's got a problem: our cardiac arrest survival rates are seriously low. We're talking way below the national average. But some awesome folks in Birmingham and Huntsville are stepping up to change that!

The Shocking Stats

Did you know only 3% of Alabamians survive a cardiac arrest outside the hospital? That's compared to a 10% national average! The American Heart Association (AHA) is determined to turn the tide, starting with training more people in CPR.

CPR: The Life-Saving Skill

The AHA points out that over 350,000 Americans die from cardiac arrest each year, and 70% of these tragedies happen at home. Imagine the impact if more families were prepared! The AHA suggests at least one, ideally two, CPR-trained individuals per household.

Birmingham's Bold Plan

Birmingham's bystander CPR response rate is just 16%, a far cry from the national 48%. That's why the AHA has launched a Sudden Cardiac Arrest Task Force, led by Dr. Ryan Coute at UAB. They're turning Birmingham into a test case, modeling strategies that can be rolled out statewide. "Imagine a person collapsing in public," says Dr. Coute. "Only 16 out of 100 would receive CPR." Yikes!

A "Nation of Lifesavers" in Action

This task force is part of the AHA's "Nation of Lifesavers" movement, bringing together healthcare pros, emergency services, faith leaders, and local government. Lizzi Willicott, executive director of the AHA, is thrilled about the collaboration, saying it will transform Birmingham into a community of lifesavers.

Spreading the Word Across Alabama

While Birmingham and Huntsville are leading the charge, the AHA hopes these efforts will inspire communities throughout Alabama. Fire departments, churches, schools – everyone is getting involved to boost CPR awareness, training, and access to AEDs.

Be a Hero!

Bottom line? Expanding CPR education can save lives. Let's make Alabama a state of lifesavers, one CPR-trained person at a time!
