Alabama Shoots for $50 Billion Rural Health Boost!

Get ready, folks! Governor Kay Ivey just announced Alabama has officially thrown its hat in the ring for a massive federal program designed to revitalize rural healthcare. The state submitted its plan to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, hoping to snag a big slice of that sweet federal cheddar.

One Big Beautiful Bill & Rural Health Wins

Remember that One Big Beautiful Bill Congress passed in July? Well, it included a provision for a whopping $50 billion dedicated to strengthening healthcare in rural areas across the nation. Our own Senators Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt have been championing this, hailing it as a major win for Alabama's rural communities.

Alabama's Plan: 11 Initiatives to Transform Rural Healthcare

Alabama's plan outlines 11 coordinated initiatives designed to breathe new life into rural healthcare facilities. Think improved financial stability, expanded access to care, and better health outcomes, all thanks to telehealth, shared services, and a stronger healthcare workforce pipeline. According to the state, roughly 1.6 million Alabamians call the state's 58 rural counties home, and our rural hospitals are facing some of the highest closure risks in the country.

Here's a sneak peek at those 11 initiatives:

  • Collaborative Electronic Health Record (EHR), IT & Cybersecurity Initiative
  • Rural Health Initiative (telehealth/tele-consult network)
  • Maternal and Fetal Health Initiative (digital regionalization and telerobotic ultrasound)
  • Rural Workforce Initiative
  • Cancer Digital Regionalization Initiative
  • Simulation Training Initiative
  • Statewide EMS Trauma and Stroke Initiative
  • EMS Treat-In-Place Initiative
  • Mental Health Initiative (including school-based tele-mental health and CCBHC expansion)
  • Community Medicine Initiative (mobile wellness & nutrition)
  • Rural Health Practice Initiative (including dental access)

What's Next?

If Alabama gets the green light, the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) will be running the show. They'll be publishing rules and application details for providers and other eligible groups. We're talking about providers, EMS agencies, mental-health organizations, rural clinics, hospitals, and community partners all potentially benefiting!

The state also plans to push for some policy changes to smooth things out, like telehealth parity and easier data-sharing between facilities.

Governor Ivey called today's milestone "critically important" and emphasized the potential for "transformational change" in rural Alabama. Fingers crossed, ChumCity!

Auburn Coaching Search: A Three-Way Tug-of-War?

The hunt is on in Auburn for a new head football coach after Hugh Freeze's exit following a tough loss at home to Kentucky. AD John Cohen has a huge task ahead, but the Tigers aren't alone in their pursuit of top coaching talent.

LSU and Florida Loom Large

Unfortunately for Auburn, they're competing with both LSU and Florida for a premier head coach. This certainly throws a wrench into landing their top choice. However, let's not forget, Auburn is still a phenomenal program.

Finebaum Weighs In

SEC analyst Paul Finebaum chimed in on WNSP 105.5 FM, suggesting Auburn might rank third in a "beauty contest" behind LSU and Florida. But, he emphasized the unique allure of The Plains.

A Gold Mine Waiting to be Discovered

"Auburn is unique," Finebaum said. "It’s not a job everybody wants but I do think it’s a job that you can turn into a gold mine." He pointed to the passionate fanbase, even for a less-than-thrilling matchup.

Alignment is Key

Finebaum believes Auburn's administrative alignment is strong and suggests focusing on finding the right fit, not just the hottest name.

A Sleeping Giant?

Only time will tell if Auburn nails this hire. Finebaum is spot-on: Auburn is a special place, and the right coach could awaken a sleeping giant. Now it's up to Cohen and the team to find that perfect leader.

Phenix City Legend Woodrow Lowe Passes Away

Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama, has a history of producing exceptional leaders, and Woodrow Lowe was undoubtedly one of its brightest stars. Sadly, the All-American linebacker passed away on Thursday at his home in Collierville, Tennessee, at the age of 71.

A Crimson Tide Icon

Lowe's college football career with the Alabama Crimson Tide under the legendary Bear Bryant from 1972 to 1975 was nothing short of spectacular. He earned All-American honors three times, achieving consensus status in 1974.

From Central High to Alabama Greatness

After dominating the field at Central High, Lowe joined the University of Alabama in 1972. He became one of only two Tide players to be named an All-American three times, joining Cornelius Bennett. He earned All-American status in 1973, 1974, and 1975, and was a vital part of four SEC championship teams and one national championship squad. He still holds the Alabama record for most tackles in a single season (134 in 1973) and ranks third all-time with 315 career tackles.

NFL Career and Coaching Legacy

Drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 1976, Lowe spent eleven seasons as a Charger linebacker. Known for his exceptional durability, he missed only one game. He was also a skilled pass defender, racking up 21 interceptions, with four returned for touchdowns.

After retiring from the NFL, Lowe transitioned to coaching, working as a defensive assistant for the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs. He then returned to Central High as an assistant coach, contributing to their 1993 state championship win. He also spent five years with the UAB Blazers.

Returning Home

Lowe later served as head coach for Central High’s rival, Smith Station High School, before becoming an assistant at Jackson-Olin High in Birmingham. In 2009, he returned to his alma mater, Central High, as head coach until 2014. He also served as head football coach at Selma High School.

Hall of Fame Recognition

Woodrow Lowe's achievements earned him inductions into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. His brother, Eddie Lowe, served as Mayor of Phenix City.

Funeral arrangements will be announced soon.

Tuberville Brings the Heat to Auburn

Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) fired up a packed Neville Arena at Auburn University during Turning Point USA's "This is the Turning Point Tour." The former coach brought his signature energy and straight talk, and the crowd was eating it up!

Back on Familiar Turf

"I think I've been here before," Tuberville joked, referencing his Auburn roots and eliciting laughs from the student-filled arena. He reminisced about his connection with the late Charlie Kirk, emphasizing Kirk's passion for young people and education.

Lessons from a Legend

Tuberville shared advice, drawing from both his coaching experience and Kirk’s wisdom. "The only thing this country owes you is an opportunity," he declared, urging students to prioritize hard work, personal development, and faith.

Ripping on the Status Quo

The Senator didn't hold back on hot-button issues. He blasted the national debt, slammed "dead broke, folks!", and criticized what he sees as flawed immigration policies. His comments on border security drew thunderous applause.

DEI in the Crosshairs

Tuberville also took aim at DEI initiatives and transgender ideology. "DEI is just discrimination under a different name," he asserted, advocating for merit-based systems. He also passionately declared his stance on protecting young girls in sports.

Looking Ahead

With a firm grip on GOP support and a message that resonates with young voters, Tuberville's Auburn appearance showcased his continued influence. His campaign is even launching "Students for Coach" to mobilize grassroots support. Could this be a glimpse into the future of Alabama politics?

Holt's Impressive Resume

Before landing in Alabama, Holt was making waves with America PAC, leading huge grassroots and voter engagement efforts. Big News for District 48!

After a lot of thought and talking it over with family and friends, I'm excited to announce I'm running for the Alabama House of Representatives, ready to serve the folks of District 48!

Why I'm Running

For years, I've been a federal prosecutor, fighting for victims and working to keep our communities safe. I'm also a business owner, a husband, and a dad. I want to use that experience to make District 48 even better.

Building a Brighter Future

My goal? To strengthen our district and state so our kids have even more opportunities than we did. I want thriving communities where families can live, work, and raise their kids. We need to make sure our talented students stay in Alabama after graduation!

Supporting Small Business

Small businesses are the heart of our community, and I'll fight to cut red tape and make sure they have the resources they need to grow. I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and work with our amazing leaders to unlock our district's full potential.

Keeping Our Communities Safe

Public safety is key. As a prosecutor, I know families need to feel safe at home, kids need to get to school safely, and businesses need to be able to invest and grow. I'll make sure our neighborhoods are safe and secure for everyone.

Investing in Our Schools

Our schools are a source of pride, but we need to do more to support our teachers and students. We need to attract and keep great teachers, update our schools, and provide the resources students need to succeed.

District 48: Our Home

District 48 is a special place. It's where Candi and I raised our kids and made lifelong friends. We owe it to the next generation to make our community even better – safer, stronger, and more vibrant. If elected, I promise to work tirelessly to make that happen!

Alabama Celebrates Teachers and Calls for More Heroes!

Get ready to shower some love on Alabama's amazing teachers! The Alabama State Department of Education just kicked off its 6th annual "Thank Alabama Teachers Month" with a bang at Vestavia Hills Elementary Liberty Park. The celebration was all about honoring the incredible educators across the state and highlighting the urgent need to recruit more passionate individuals to the profession. The wonderful faculty and staff at Vestavia Hills rolled out the red carpet for everyone.

A Star-Studded Kickoff

State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey led the charge, joined by Vestavia Hills Superintendent Dr. Todd Freeman and other big names in education. Governor Kay Ivey even chimed in with a video message, offering words of encouragement and officially declaring November as "Thank Alabama Teachers Month." Plus, they unveiled the department's fresh "Alabama Achieves" logo – symbolizing the awesome progress Alabama's students and teachers are making!

Alabama's Academic Comeback Story

Dr. Mackey emphasized how teachers are fueling Alabama's "dramatic improvements" in student learning. He noted some amazing stats: Alabama leads the nation in math recovery, ranks third in reading recovery, and boasts a record-breaking 92% graduation rate – six points higher than the national average! Way to go, Alabama!

Teacher Shortage: A Call to Action!

But here's the deal: even with all this success, Alabama is facing a serious teacher shortage, especially in elementary, special education, and early-childhood classrooms. At the start of the school year, hundreds of positions remained unfilled by certified teachers. Dr. Mackey pointed out that these shortages hit high-poverty and rural areas the hardest.

Be a Hero: Become a Teacher!

"If you want to invest in the lives of young people... then be a teacher!" Dr. Mackey urged. He highlighted the rewarding feeling of making a difference in students' lives every single day.

A Recruitment Campaign to the Rescue

The department's new recruitment campaign aims to not only appreciate current teachers but also inspire more Alabamians to join their ranks. Governor Ivey echoed this sentiment, praising educators for their inspiring and challenging work. She added, "As a former teacher myself, I know there’s no greater reward than seeing your students succeed – and no greater gift than a simple, heartfelt ‘thank you.’"

Spread the Love!

The Alabama Department of Education is encouraging everyone to share messages of gratitude throughout November using the hashtag #ThankALTeachers. Let's celebrate the counselors, coaches, mentors, and role models who shape the future of Alabama's students!

Elmore County Voters Say "NO" to Funding Plan

Looks like Elmore County voters have spoken loud and clear, rejecting the "Enhance Elmore" plan in a landslide. The proposal aimed to boost public safety funding, but residents weren't convinced.

What Was the Plan?

"Enhance Elmore" proposed new property assessments and a tax on vape products. Homeowners would have paid around $150 annually, businesses $300. The cash would've funded fire protection, road upkeep, and most notably, a new county jail.

The Opposition

The group "Resist Elmore Tax Hike" fought hard against the measure, raising concerns about transparency and the financial burden on rural residents. They're now looking for alternative funding solutions, maybe even working with state lawmakers.

Back to the Drawing Board

County Commissioner Bart Mercer admits the county's public safety needs haven't disappeared. Budget talks are coming up soon, and officials will be scrambling to figure out how to address urgent needs with existing funds.

Fire Departments Feeling the Heat

It's no secret fire departments are struggling with rising costs. Those fire trucks that used to cost peanuts now run nearly a million bucks! And the county's fire fee? It hasn't been touched since 2005. Ouch.

What's Next?

Everyone agrees public safety is crucial. As Elmore County dives into budget discussions, expect residents and watchdog groups to be watching closely. How will officials bridge the funding gap for these essential services? Stay tuned!

Alabama's Finest City Leaders Honored!

Over 50 of Alabama's awesome municipal officials snagged some serious recognition at the Alabama League of Municipalities' annual Certified Municipal Official graduation and awards bash on October 30th! The Montgomery Renaissance Hotel was buzzing with excitement for these civic superstars.

Leveling Up Local Government

Remember that Alabama Municipal Official Training Act that kicked in this year? Now, mayors and council members gotta clock in 10 hours of training annually during their first term. But it doesn't stop there! After hitting 40 hours of basic CMO certification, they keep those brains sharp with at least 5 training hours each year. Knowledge is power, people!

A Partnership for Progress

Greg Cochran, executive director of the Alabama League of Municipalities, emphasized the League's 90-year mission to equip municipal officials with the skills they need. This year, they teamed up with the Alabama Community College System to amp up those online courses – making learning accessible even when attending events isn't possible. Talk about innovative!

Honoring the Best of the Best

This year's ceremony shined a spotlight on six certified municipal officials, 27 advanced officials, nine CMO emeriti, and five Tier II honorees (those overachievers with 120+ training hours). And get this – 15 municipalities scored Certified Municipal Achievement (CMA) Awards, a new record! That CMA award recognizes towns where both the mayor and full council completes at least 40 hours of training each year.

Training Today, Thriving Tomorrow

ACCS Chancellor Jimmy Baker is stoked about the partnership: "We are pleased to partner with the Alabama League of Municipalities to modernize their online training." Since the CMO program started 31 years ago, over 5,200 Alabama municipal officials have leveled up their leadership game.

SEC Coaching Chaos: Hold On Tight, Chumsters!

The SEC is about to get wild, y'all! Forget the pigskin for a minute, because the coaching carousel is spinning out of control. LSU, Florida, Auburn, and Arkansas all have HUGE openings, and who knows who else might be joining the party soon? Buckle up, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!

Auburn: The Diamond in the Rough?

So, which of these coaching gigs is the primo spot? SEC Network guru Peter Burns says it's… Auburn?! Yep, he thinks the Plains are where it's at for ambitious head coaches.

Why Auburn? Burns Breaks it Down

According to Burns, Auburn offers something special: alignment. He highlighted a clear chain of command, with a supportive athletic director and president all pulling in the same direction. Plus, he points out, the last couple of hires were such a mess that the bar is practically on the FLOOR. "Auburn is probably the best job, the safest job, of all of those," Burns declared, citing dysfunction at Florida and LSU.

Who Will Win the Coaching Lottery?

Will coaches see Auburn the same way? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the Tigers are in a head-to-head battle with LSU and Florida (and maybe Arkansas too) to land their next leader. Get your popcorn ready, folks, because this is gonna be good!
