College Football Playoff Rankings

The first College Football Playoff rankings are HERE! Ohio State's sitting pretty at No. 1, with undefeated Indiana right behind at No. 2. Texas A&M grabbed the No. 3 spot, and Alabama's holding strong at No. 4. Looks like defensive dominance from the Big Ten and SEC is the name of the game!

German Chancellor's Stance on Syrian Refugees

Wow, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is making waves! He's taking a tough stance, saying Syrians no longer qualify for asylum now that the civil war is (supposedly) over. He expects a mass voluntary return, but is talking deportations if folks refuse. Sounds a little familiar, doesn't it?

Tommy Tuberville's UBER Act of 2025

From the gridiron to the Senate! Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) just dropped the UBER Act of 2025. This bill would ban ride-share companies from federal contracts if they don't require their drivers to be proficient in English.

Auburn's Curriculum Compliance

Auburn's cracking down! They're requiring educators to certify that their Fall 2025 syllabi, content, and teaching are all in line with state and federal laws. Apparently, some folks weren't exactly following the rules...

Shutdown Impacts: Redstone Arsenal and Huntsville

The never-ending shutdown is hitting hard. Services at Redstone Arsenal's Fox Army Health Center are getting slashed, with primary care taking a hit and the pharmacy only open three days a week starting Nov. 13. On a brighter note, the Huntsville Mazda Toyota plant is stepping up, donating $50,000 to the North Alabama Food Bank to support furloughed workers and SNAP recipients. That's what's up!

FAA Flight Cuts

Heads up, travelers! The FAA's mandating a 10% flight cut at 40 major airports, including Atlanta and Chicago O'Hare, due to air traffic controller shortages related to the shutdown. While Alabama's airports aren't directly affected, keep a close eye on your flight status!

Shutdown Endgame?

Fingers crossed! There's talk of a bipartisan deal to end the shutdown with an extended spending bill into January. On the table are healthcare subsidies, VA funding, agriculture, and military spending. But remember previous attempts crashed and burned, so don't hold your breath just yet!

Calling All Alabama Teens: Score a Sweet Outdoor Adventure!

Hey ChumCity peeps! Got a teen (ages 12-16) itching for some outdoor action? Listen up! A brand-new scholarship is offering Alabama youth a chance to dive into the world of shooting sports, learn cool new skills, and connect with our state's awesome outdoor heritage.

The AWF Thomas and Cindy Harris Foundation Scholarship

The Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF), together with the Thomas and Cindy Harris Foundation, has launched the "AWF Thomas and Cindy Harris Foundation Shooting Sports Scholarship Fund." It’s all about giving Alabama teens a “first-time” experience in shooting sports.

What's the Deal?

This scholarship isn't just about pulling the trigger. It's designed to bust down barriers and give kids who might not otherwise get the chance to experience the outdoors. It covers everything at top-notch shooting facilities across Alabama, like Selwood Farm, Pursell Farms, and the Lower Wetumpka Shotgun Sports Club.

More Than Just Target Practice

Teens will learn firearm safety, respect for our amazing natural world, responsibility, and a whole lotta confidence. Plus, applicants apply with a parent or guardian, making it a fantastic bonding experience.

Preserving Alabama's Outdoor Legacy

Thomas Harris says it best: "Outdoor traditions are a key part of Alabama’s heritage. This program helps preserve those traditions while empowering the next generation to embrace the outdoors.”

AWF's Tim Gothard adds, "This scholarship is about more than shooting sports. It’s about fostering a love of Alabama’s outdoors and outdoor pursuits that can last a lifetime.”

North Village Town Center is Coming!

This game-changing project, called North Village Town Center, will be popping up at the intersection of State Route 255 and Memorial Parkway, right across from the new Food City.

Big Names Already On Board!

We can already reveal that Target and Home Depot are locked in as retail anchors! Construction is slated for the west side of Memorial Parkway, near the Northern Bypass intersection. More awesome tenants will be announced soon, so stay tuned!

A Win for the Community

"This is a project that has been years in the making and meets a need for residents in north Huntsville,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. Alabama Braces for Potential Election Shake-Up in 2026

With the Supreme Court possibly revisiting how race factors into political district lines, Alabama lawmakers are already thinking ahead. They've pre-filed a bill to head off any election chaos should district lines shift right before the 2026 elections.

The Clock is Ticking

The 2026 legislative session kicks off January 13, with primary elections set for May 19 and the general election on November 3. Any late-breaking redistricting rulings from the Supreme Court could land smack-dab in the middle of campaign season.

SB23: A Contingency Plan

Senate Pro Tem Garlan Gudger's SB23 aims to provide a safety net. The bill would invalidate primary results only in the district that changed, keep already-qualified candidates on the ballot, and require the Governor to call a special primary within five days of a final court ruling.

Legal Background

The Supreme Court recently revisited a similar Louisiana case, using the same mechanism that shaped Alabama's 2nd Congressional District following redistricting litigation. This new district propelled U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) into office in 2024. The 1st Congressional District is now up for grabs in 2026.

More Legal Battles Looming

A federal court also ruled that Alabama’s 2021 State Senate map violates the Voting Rights Act in the Montgomery area. This could lead to further race-based changes to Alabama’s state legislative map.

SB23: Keeping Elections on Track

If the Supreme Court changes the rules, the Alabama Legislature might have to redraw lines again under pressure. If enacted, SB23 would ensure elections stay on schedule with final, lawful maps. Special primaries would need to wrap up by August 31, with the November 3 general election proceeding as planned.

UA Launches New School of Leadership and Policy!

Big news, ChumCity! The University of Alabama is stepping up its game with a brand-new School of Leadership and Policy! The UA System Board of Trustees just gave the green light, and they're aiming to have it up and running as early as next fall!

A Rare Move for UA

This is a HUGE deal. It's been ages since UA launched a new school that wasn't part of an existing college. Think Harvard's Kennedy School or Georgetown's McCourt School – UA is aiming high!

What's the Plan?

UA President Dr. Peter Mohler says the goal is to create a "nationally recognized" spot for leadership and policy education. They're talking coursework combined with real-world internships at local, state, and federal agencies, plus partnerships with top private sector companies. Sounds intense!

Priorities for the Future

Mohler laid out four key goals:

  • Top-notch education linking theory to practice.
  • Leadership development based on knowledge and ethics.
  • Service and impact through partnerships.
  • Helping Alabama and the nation by prepping grads to tackle big problems.

Real-World Experience

Forget just sitting in a classroom! Students will dive into internships, policy labs, and community projects, getting hands-on experience with public institutions, businesses, and nonprofits.

Building on Success

This isn't coming from nowhere. The Shelby Institute for Policy and Leadership has already been training undergrads in public service, bringing in big names to campus.

Home Sweet Home

The new school will be based in historic Farrah Hall on the Quad, which is getting a makeover!

Senator Britt's Stamp of Approval

U.S. Senator Katie Britt, a UA alum, praised the school's potential, saying it's a "bold step in equipping future policymakers."

The Next Steps

The proposal now heads to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education for review.

Chancellor's Excitement

UA System Chancellor Sid J. Trant is pumped, stating the school will "educate and empower our students to become effective and principled leaders." Exciting times for UA!

The Poarch Creek Indians: Protecting Our Story

Ever wonder how the Poarch Creek Indians keep our heritage alive? It all comes down to the incredible work of the Tribal Historic Preservation Department (THPD)! They're not just about dusty artifacts and old buildings; they're the guardians of our identity, the champions of our sovereignty, and the keepers of our story.

More Than Just Preservation

Did you know that the THPD operates under Title 39 of the Tribal Code? They're responsible for spotting and protecting cultural sites, managing archaeological digs, caring for ancestral remains and precious historical items, and capturing the wisdom of our elders through the Oral History Project.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

The THPD collaborates with Tribal departments, federal agencies, and other Native nations to safeguard our people's physical, historical, and cultural landscape. Every location, every artifact, every story is a vital piece of who we are, treated with utmost respect.

Everyone's Invited to Help!

And here's the best part: the THPD can't do it alone. Protecting our heritage is a team effort! Every Poarch Creek Tribal Citizen is encouraged to help identify and preserve the places, stories, and items that deserve our protection.

A Mission to Preserve

Their mission is simple: preserve, protect, and promote our history and heritage for generations to come.

Honoring Our Ancestors

Billy Bailey, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, says, "We are committed, day in and day out, to honoring what our ancestors went through to get us where we are today."

Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

This November, as we celebrate Native American Heritage Month, let's give a huge shout-out to the Poarch Creek Indians THPD. They're vital in keeping us connected to our roots and our history.

The Poarch Creek Indians

The Poarch Creek Indians are the only federally recognized tribe in Alabama. From hospitality to aerospace, we operate in diverse industries worldwide!
