Huntsville's Exploding! Rocket City Sees Massive Growth

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity! Huntsville is booming like never before. We're talking about adding the equivalent of a cozy little neighborhood every single month.

Rocket City Numbers Are Skyrocketing

As of July 1st, our estimated population has reached a whopping 249,102! That's a 15.9% jump since the 2020 Census. Think about it: 18 new neighbors every day, and 34,000 awesome people choosing Huntsville as their home sweet home in the last five years alone.

Top 20 Fastest-Growing!

Word on the street (and from the City and its Planning Department) is that Huntsville is now rocketing into the top 20 fastest-growing cities in the nation for cities over 100,000. We're also officially one of the top 100 biggest cities in the whole country! How cool is that?

Mayor Battle's Take

"We're thrilled to welcome new folks to Huntsville," says Mayor Tommy Battle. "But even more important than the growth itself is how we manage it. We're focused on keeping the quality of life high for everyone, whether they've been here forever or just arrived. That means plenty of housing at all price points and smart investments in roads and schools."

How We Know!

City officials aren't just guessing. They're looking at the real deal: new homes being built, utility signups, and how things have changed over time. They're using the Planning Department's super-accurate data to get ready for all these new faces.

Housing Boom!

The housing market is reflecting Huntsville's clever growth plan. From January to June 2025, we added 1,945 new places to live, bringing the total to 120,904! Things might be slowing down a tad from record-breaking years, but we're still on track to add over 4,000 new housing units by the end of the year! That's four years in a row of major housing development, way above what we saw before 2020.

Big News for Alabama's Fourth District!

Get ready, folks! Congressman Robert Aderholt is bringing home the bacon – over $56 million in federal funding, to be exact! These funds are earmarked for awesome community and transportation projects across Alabama's Fourth Congressional District. Think Rainsville, Lauderdale County, Tuscaloosa, Guntersville... you name it!

Aderholt (R-Haleyville) secured this loot as part of the Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations process.

Fingers Crossed, Almost There!

Hold your horses, though! While the House Appropriations Committee has given the thumbs-up, these projects still need to make their way through the full legislative process before getting the official green light. But, Aderholt assures us, he's "committed to seeing these priorities through!"

What's on the Docket?

So, what kind of cool stuff are we talking about? Aderholt says it's all about "strengthening our infrastructure, supporting our rural communities, and investing in the future of Alabama’s Fourth District." Here's a sneak peek:

Sweet Projects Incoming!

  • Albertville Regional Airport Expansion: $5 million to boost corporate investment and tourism.
  • Career and Technical Education Center Equipment (Jasper): $1.1 million for welding, automotive, and other tech training.
  • Hanceville Affordable Housing: $2.54 million for micro-homes and a childcare center for student families!
  • Health Clinic in Fayette: $5.5 million for a brand-new rural health clinic.
  • I-22 Connector Feasibility Studies (Winston/Franklin counties): $5 million to explore a north-south corridor!
  • Lauderdale County Agriculture Multipurpose Complex: $1.5 million for agricultural education.
  • Medical Equipment at UAB St. Vincent’s Blount (Oneonta): $1 million for a new CT scanner.
  • Medical Equipment for Hospital in Winfield: $1.14 million to replace an MRI machine.
  • Northeast Alabama Community College Nursing School Equipment: $273K to upgrade simulation labs.
  • Sanitary Sewer Service (Guntersville): $2.17 million to eliminate septic tanks!
  • Snead State Workforce Advancement: $437K for 3D printing equipment.
  • Tuscaloosa National Airport Terminal Improvements: $8.5 million to replace the terminal.
  • Bridge Replacement (Cullman): $13.5 million to replace the St. Bernard Bridge.
  • Waterloo Bridge Replacement (Lauderdale County): $7 million to replace a weight-restricted bridge.
  • Winston County Road Resurfacing: $1.55 million to improve access to Bankhead National Forest.

Putting Our Tax Dollars to Work!

Aderholt emphasizes that this is all about bringing our federal tax dollars back home. "I want to make sure the people of the Fourth District get a fair share," he says.

Mobile Bay Dredging Drama: Economic Boom or Environmental Bust?

The Port of Mobile's ambitious plan to deepen its ship channel is stirring up some serious waves! While the project aims to welcome bigger ships and boost Alabama's economy, it's facing fierce opposition from environmental groups, local fishermen, and even some elected officials. What's the catch? Let's dive in!

Supporters Say: Full Steam Ahead!

The Alabama Port Authority and business bigwigs are all aboard, touting the port as a vital economic engine. They argue that expanding the channel is crucial for Alabama to stay competitive in the global market. Plus, they highlight the Army Corps of Engineers' "thin-layer placement" method, which they say helps restore habitats while dealing with the dredged sediment.

Critics Cry Foul: Bay Under Threat!

But hold your horses! Environmental watchdogs like Mobile Baykeeper, along with commercial fishermen and certain politicians, are raising red flags. They claim this sediment disposal method is wreaking havoc on shrimp and oyster habitats, leading to smaller catches and a messed-up ecosystem. They're even pointing to past bans on this practice as a reason for change!

Battle Lines Drawn: What's Next?

Mobile Baykeeper is leading the charge, urging Congress to step in and ban the current disposal method. They insist they're not trying to stop the dredging altogether, just how the waste is handled. They've even filed a notice to sue the Corps! Other opponents are suggesting alternatives like using existing disposal sites or putting the dredged material toward coastal restoration projects.

A Delicate Balance: Economy vs. Environment

The debate is far from over, with both sides fighting hard for their vision of Mobile Bay's future. The big question: how do we balance economic growth with the long-term health of our environment and the fishing industry that depends on it? Only time will tell!

Cali's New Maps: Newsom vs. Texas, Round 2!

California Governor Gavin Newsom just dropped the state's freshly drawn congressional maps, aiming to "END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY." Are these lines political masterstrokes or just wishful thinking? Looks like the Golden State is firing shots at Texas' redistricting game.

Auburn Kicks Test-Optional to the Curb

Heads up, future Tigers! Auburn University's going back to requiring standardized tests for admissions by Fall 2027. Remember that whole test-optional thing? Gone. They're saying it was implemented because some thought the tests were unfair to minority applicants.

"Home for All" Plan: Birmingham's Housing Hail Mary?

The Birmingham City Council just gave the thumbs up to the final phase of its "Home for All" plan. Will this actually tackle the city's housing and homelessness woes? Time will tell. Don't hold your breath.

Trump to Russia: Talk or Else!

Donald Trump's sending a message to Russia, warning of "severe consequences" if they don't negotiate an end to the Ukraine conflict. He even mentioned a West Bank-style occupation as a possibility. He also said he doesn't want to have conversations about that in which "I see that a rocket hit a nursing home or a rocket hit an apartment building, and people are laying dead in the streets.”

Alabama Senate Race: Early Polls Stir the Pot

Cygnal-BCA poll says Alabama's Attorney General Steve Marshall's got an early lead in the U.S. Senate race. But, Bruce Pearl probably isn't entering it.

D.C. Crime Crackdown: Trump's Taking Charge

Trump's D.C. crime crackdown is in full swing! Over 100 arrests in a single day – everything from suspected homicide to narcotics charges and firearm offenses. Plus, 23 illegal immigrants were picked up.

Alabama's GOP Cheers Trump's D.C. Rescue Mission

Alabama's GOP delegation is all in on Trump's plan to make D.C. safer. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) put it bluntly: "Mayor Bowser has failed D.C. Thank you, @POTUS, for deploying the National Guard and for working to restore our capital to the shining jewel of America."

Trump's First 200 Days: Promises Kept!

It's been 200 days since President Trump's triumphant return, and the progress is nothing short of AMAZING! Forget the media's doom and gloom; real Americans are seeing REAL results.

Last week, I chatted with folks in Enterprise and Geneva. The message was crystal clear: South Alabama wants more of this bold, America First leadership from President Trump!

The Wins Keep Coming

Let's dive into some of the promises he's already nailed.

First off, the One Big Beautiful Bill – a GAME CHANGER! No tax on tips, overtime, or Social Security! The 2017 Trump tax cuts? Extended AND permanent! That's what happens when a businessman puts America first.

Our border? SECURE! Apprehensions are down to record lows, and ZERO releases! Plus, over 13,000 missing migrant children have been rescued thanks to his leadership. Lives are being saved!

Energy Independence and Protecting Our Kids

President Trump is UNLEASHING American energy, opening up millions of acres for mining and drilling. He's dismantling Biden's radical "Green New Deal" garbage and rescinding billions in handouts to special interests.

And he's not stopping there! President Trump is protecting our children, ending chemical and surgical mutilation. Major hospitals like Stanford, Yale, and Penn have STOPPED so-called "gender-affirming care" for kids.

Exposing the Deep State

He's also slashed regulations, ended DEI nonsense, enjoyed record-breaking market growth, and is fighting to keep men out of women's sports.

President Trump promised to expose the deep state, and he's delivering! Thanks to his work with Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, we now have declassified evidence that President Obama weaponized the intelligence community. He's unveiling the truth about weaponized government!

President Trump is moving at warp speed to save our nation, and I'm proud to stand with him every step of the way. Promises made, promises KEPT!
