Local Mom Champions CHOOSE Act: "It's Worth It!"

An Alabama mom is singing the praises of the CHOOSE Act (Creating Hope and Opportunity for Our Students’ Education Act of 2024), urging other parents to take advantage of the opportunity after witnessing its positive impact on her children's education.

Breauna McDade, a Montgomery resident, initially felt comfortable with her local school system's quality, but she desired a school that reinforced the values instilled at home.

An Easy Choice

"Do it!" she exclaimed. "Use it! It’s just paperwork. The hardest part is the five-minute application. Give your kids the advantage we didn't have!"

McDade, after receiving approval, enrolled her son, KaMarrion, at Valiant Cross Academy, where her older son, KaMerrin, already attends thanks to another education program.

Governor Ivey's Take

Governor Kay Ivey expressed her enthusiasm for the McDade family's participation in the education savings account (ESA) program.

"The CHOOSE Act is empowering thousands of Alabama families like the McDades," Ivey stated. "KaMarrion’s mom wanted to send all her sons to Valiant Cross for a quality education and to grow into young men, and the CHOOSE Act is making that happen. I'm thrilled to see this Alabama mom and her boys getting the education they deserve!"

CHOOSE Act Details

The CHOOSE Act offers refundable income tax credits, creating education savings accounts for eligible K-12 students in Alabama. These ESAs can be used for tuition, fees, and other educational expenses at approved Education Service Providers (ESPs).

Signed into law in March 2024, the program launched for the 2025-26 school year and will expand to all students by 2027-28. The initial cycle saw over 22,000 applications, with over 23,000 students approved and $124 million in ESA funding distributed.

Since applications opened in January 2025, students from every Alabama county have applied, totaling 36,873 students.

By the Numbers

According to the Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR), students from all grade levels applied this year, with over 23,000 receiving approval. This translates to over $124 million in ESAs supporting school choice for Alabama families.

The application process for the 2026-2027 academic year will begin in January 2026.

Tide Watch: Predicting Alabama's First Loss of the Season

The Crimson Tide are gearing up for year two of the Kalen DeBoer era, following a whirlwind 2023 that saw highs like a Georgia upset and lows against Vandy, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. This season's schedule? Let's just say it's a gauntlet! Undefeated seasons are rare beasts these days. So, where might the Tide stumble first? Here are three potential pit stops:

Week 5: Showdown in Athens

On September 27th, Bama rolls into Athens for a post-bye-week battle against the Georgia Bulldogs. Remember last year's nail-biter in Tuscaloosa? This time, it's on Georgia's turf. After navigating early tests against Florida State, ULM, and Wisconsin, the Tide could be undefeated. But face it, Georgia is still Georgia, and a road game there is the ultimate challenge. A loss here is very possible.

Week 9: Facing Sellers in South Carolina

October 25th takes us to Columbia, where the Gamecocks boast quarterback LaNorris Sellers. Historically, it takes a stellar QB performance to topple Alabama. Expect a wild atmosphere in a stadium known for its intensity. A 7-0 start, including a home win against Tennessee, would only amplify the pressure. Can the Tide handle the heat?

Week 10: LSU Comes to Tuscaloosa

If Alabama's still perfect heading into November 8th against LSU, they'll likely be the nation's top-ranked team. But the back half of the schedule is brutal. After a second bye week, it's the Tigers at home, followed by a revenge game against a revamped Oklahoma, and then the Iron Bowl on the road. LSU historically performs well in Tuscaloosa, and with a quarterback like Garrett Nussmeier, they could definitely pull off an upset.

The Prediction

While a later loss would sting, the trip to Georgia feels like the most daunting hurdle. It will be quarterback Ty Simpson’s first SEC start in a hostile environment, and against Kirby Smart's always tough defense. It won't be a blowout, but I'm predicting a loss in Athens, marking Georgia's first regular-season win against Alabama since 2007.
