Alabama's Power Players: Who's Running the Show?
Big changes are coming to Alabama after November! New governor, new officers, new House – but no shortage of folks vying for control. So, who actually holds the power?
Yellowhammer News, celebrating 15 years, unveils its Power & Influence: Top 50, spotlighting Alabama's real movers and shakers and predicting who'll dominate next. We're not just guessing – we've got a track record!
These are the folks shaping government, politics, and business, setting the agenda and getting things done (or stopped!). Peek behind the curtain at the people running Alabama right now:
50. Will Fuller, Capitol Resources
Will Fuller? Always cooking up something good in Montgomery! He's a constant presence, benefiting both himself and his clients. Called him one to watch back in 2019, and we weren't wrong – just early! He's no longer "one to watch," he's someone you're dealing with.
49. Wes Allen, Alabama Secretary of State
Wes Allen's influence goes deep. He's connected to lawmakers, judges, and election officials across the state, and he makes those connections work. He knows the job inside and out, having held it at various levels. He earned endorsements through hard work, not just name recognition.
48. Chris Elliott, Alabama State Senate
A real bulldog! Elliott's aggressive, relentless, and constitutionally unable to let go of a fight. That intensity can get him in trouble, but it also makes him effective. He forces his way into policy debates and leaves his mark. A principled conservative accruing hard-fought and hard-earned influence.
47. CJ Hincy, Auburn University
A Statehouse vet with deep relationships, C.J. Hincy embodies the daily grind. He's a constant presence, observing and engaging. But it's his warm personality and relationship-building skills that set him apart. Lawmakers are glad to see him. Pair that with his higher education policy knowledge, and you have someone who can win arguments while winning hearts.
46. Mary Pat Lawrence, Protective Life
Mary Pat Lawrence's presence means business. Montgomery respects her background – Anniston roots, UA degrees, Capitol Hill internship. She spent two decades at the center of federal power, building the Alabama Business Coalition. Protective Life brought her back to Birmingham, Alabama's gain!
45. Steve Livingston, Alabama Senate Majority Leader
Steve Livingston makes the hard parts look easy. He's the durable balance of power in the Senate, brokering compromises and moving legislation forward. With a new executive branch coming in 2027, his brand of leadership might be what lasts longest.
44. Ben Patterson, Fine Geddie & Associates
Ben Patterson knows the issue and the room. He's spent two decades making those two things inseparable. With a PhD and years of experience, he's the most trusted voice on the Alabama Senate. Fine Geddie is a powerful firm, and Patterson keeps it that way.
43. Anthony Daniels, Alabama House Minority Leader
Anthony Daniels hasn't had the votes to win alone, but he's found ways to win anyway. He passes major legislation despite being in the minority party, through sincere relationships and strategic patience. He knows every hallway and every trick in the book. The incoming administration will need to know him.
42. Preston Cauthen, Alabama Power
We highlighted Preston Cauthen as "Who's Next" in 2017. Since then, he's built a rock-solid reputation. Lawmakers seek him out. His quiet, strong relationships translate into real power. No flash, just results.
41. Brandon Farmer, Alabama Nursing Home Association
Brandon Farmer runs an association that might not dominate the chatter, but gets the State House's attention when it counts. The nursing home world is a big deal in Alabama politics. With a healthcare and government relations background, Farmer's a natural fit. When his association backs a candidate, they're well-funded.
