Billy Goat Hole Ramp Reopens with Fanfare!

The wait is over, ChumCity! Last Friday, the legendary Billy Goat Hole boat ramp on Dauphin Island roared back to life after a major renovation. A crowd of locals and bigwigs gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate.

What's New at Billy Goat Hole?

This ain't your grandpa's boat ramp, folks. Billy Goat Hole boasts four spanking-new ramps, spacious docks moved further from the road (bye-bye traffic jams!), and safety upgrades galore. The docks are ADA compliant, rocking composite decking, and the parking area is bigger and better. Plus, there's a new ADA lift and wheelchair ramp for easy access to the restrooms and concession area. Talk about a glow-up!

A Ramp for the Ages

Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Commissioner Chris Blankenship was stoked about the upgrade. He praised the durable construction and top-notch materials, saying this ramp is built to last for generations and meet the needs of all boaters. Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier echoed the sentiment, highlighting the positive impact on the island's tourism.

More Than Just a Ramp

This project wasn't just about concrete and docks. It was about smart design. Former Marine Resources Director Scott Bannon emphasized the importance of watching how people use boat ramps to create a more efficient and safer experience. He even urged boaters to use the new boat prep and tie-down lanes.

Investment in the Coast

Commissioner Blankenship revealed that the Billy Goat Hole makeover was a $3 million project funded by GOMESA funds. And that's not all! Over $44 million has been invested in boating access along the Alabama coast. The upcoming Cedar Point ramp and Bayou la Batre City Docks project will only add to the growing list of places to launch your boat.

Local Love

Charter boat captain and Conservation Advisory Board member Charlie Gray is ecstatic about the revamped ramp. He believes it's a win-win for everyone, from commercial fishermen to recreational boaters to even jet ski enthusiasts. So grab your gear, fill up the cooler, and head down to Billy Goat Hole for some unforgettable water adventures!

Billy Goat Hole Reopens with a Splash!

Get ready to cast your lines, ChumCity! The legendary Billy Goat Hole boat ramp on Dauphin Island is officially back in action after a major facelift! Last Friday, locals and bigwigs gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand reopening of south Alabama's most popular launch.

What's New at Billy Goat Hole?

This ain't your grandpa's boat ramp! The renovation includes four brand-spankin' new ramps, ready to handle all your aquatic adventures. They've even moved the docks back a whopping 30 feet from Bienville Boulevard, giving everyone more room to maneuver and keeping traffic flowing smoothly. Plus, it's safer for boaters and pedestrians!

Accessibility for All

The new docks are decked out with composite material and are fully ADA compliant. That's right, everyone can enjoy the water! Other upgrades include a spruced-up parking area, an ADA-compliant lift, and a wheelchair ramp for easy access to the restrooms and concession area. Thumbs up for inclusivity!

A Long Time Coming

Alabama's Conservation Commissioner, Chris Blankenship, couldn't contain his excitement. "This has been a long time coming!" he said. He even stuck around after the ceremony to launch his own boat and enjoy some family fishing. Talk about dedication! He emphasized the improved traffic flow and the top-notch construction, ensuring the ramp will be a fixture for decades to come.

Dauphin Island is Pumped!

Mayor Jeff Collier knows what this means for the island. "We're an island that depends on tourism," he said, highlighting the impact the upgraded ramp will have on visitors and the local economy. Big thanks to Governor Ivey and the ADCNR for making this happen!

Serious Investment

The project was funded with GOMESA funds, totaling a cool $3 million. That covers the ramps, parking, and concession area – all top-of-the-line! Former Marine Resources Director Scott Bannon (retired summer 2023) played a key role in ensuring the project was done right.

Smart Design

Bannon emphasized the importance of understanding boater behavior. After countless hours of observation, he implemented changes like pull-in parking to maximize space. He also urged boaters to use the new boat prep and tie-down lanes for a safer, more efficient experience.

More to Come!

Mobile County is also gearing up for a new ramp at Cedar Point later this year, and Bayou la Batre is adding four more ramps to its City Docks project. The Alabama coast is becoming a boater's paradise!

Adventure Awaits

Current Marine Resources Director Kevin Anson, a former Boating Access Coordinator, summed it up perfectly: "This location is where a lot of people...begin their journey out into the Gulf...to experience the wonderful Alabama outdoors." So grab your gear, ChumCity, and get ready for some unforgettable adventures!

Alabama's Electrifying Election Year!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity folks! This year's election in Alabama is a doozy. We're talking about EVERY Constitutional office up for grabs! And guess what? Most of the big jobs are wide open, with no incumbents running for reelection. It's like a political free-for-all!

AG and Ag Commissioner Up for Grabs!

Two of the most important positions in the state, besides the Governor, are Attorney General and Agriculture Commissioner. Both are vacant! Rick Pate, the current Ag Commissioner, is term-limited and shooting for Lieutenant Governor. Steve Marshall, our current Attorney General, is making a run for the U.S. Senate.

These races have attracted some serious talent! Whoever wins the GOP Primary on May 19th is likely to be the next AG and Ag Commissioner – it's tough for a Democrat to win statewide in Alabama. But here's the kicker: don't expect a final decision on May 19th. These are two of the most consequential, closest, and downright interesting races in the state this year, and they're almost certainly headed for a runoff in June!

Democrats Throw Their Hats in the Ring

The Democrats aren't backing down! Ron Sparks, a former Agriculture Commissioner, wants his old job back. Jeff McLaughlin, a lawyer from Sand Mountain and former legislator, is running for Attorney General. Good candidates, but facing a tough uphill battle as Democrats.

The GOP AG Primary: A Battle Royale!

The GOP Attorney General Primary features former State Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell, Assistant Attorney General Katherine Green Robertson, and Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey. All super qualified. This race will be intense, expensive, and probably require a runoff.

Mitchell is the favorite, but Robertson is close behind, and Casey could be the surprise of the race. Casey has serious experience prosecuting criminals as a DA for over a decade!

Mitchell has a strong, conservative record and tons of support from the business community. He's raking in the dough, with over $2 million in campaign funds!

Robertson is also well-funded with over $1.5 million, however, most of her contributions have come from out-of-state, dark money PACs!

The problem for Robertson is that Casey is likely to come in a strong third and endorse Mitchell in the runoff. There's no love lost between Casey and Mitchell, and they resent Robertson's reliance on out-of-state PAC money.

Agriculture Commissioner: A Three-Horse Race!

The Agriculture Commissioner race is another nail-biter. We've got three strong candidates, all with deep roots in agriculture. Expect a runoff here too!

State Senator Jack Williams, a 12-year veteran legislator and fifth-generation farmer.

Christina Woerner McInnis, also a fifth-generation farmer. Her family are major sod grass farmers.

Corey Hill, a fourth-generation farmer from North Alabama. He's also the Mayor of his town.

Williams and McInnis will likely spend more than Hill in this race.

This is going to be a wild ride, ChumCity! Stay tuned for more updates!

Alabama's Electrifying Election Year!

The Heart of Dixie is gearing up for a HUGE election year, folks! Every single Constitutional office is up for grabs, and get this: many of the big-name positions are wide open, with no incumbents running for re-election! Think Attorney General and Agriculture Commissioner – arguably the two most crucial posts after the Governor.

A Race to Watch: Attorney General

With Steve Marshall eyeing a U.S. Senate seat, the Attorney General's race is heating up! The GOP primary promises to be a showdown between former State Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell, Assistant Attorney General Katherine Green Robertson, and Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey. Word on the street is this will be one of the most expensive state races and likely headed for a runoff.

Mitchell is considered a frontrunner, but Robertson is hot on his heels, and Casey is poised to be the dark horse in the race. Casey's deep experience as a District Attorney gives her a serious edge!

Agriculture Commissioner: A Fertile Field

Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate is term-limited and aiming for Lieutenant Governor, leaving his position wide open. Three candidates are vying for the role: State Senator Jack Williams, Christina Woerner McInnis, and Corey Hill.

All three boast impressive agricultural backgrounds. Williams is a 12-year legislative veteran and fifth-generation farmer. McInnis hails from a fifth-generation farm family and their Woerner family is huge in the sod grass industry. Hill is a fourth-generation farmer from North Alabama and Mayor of his hometown. This race is also expected to go to a runoff!

The Democratic Contenders

The Democrats aren't sitting this one out! Ron Sparks, a former Agriculture Commissioner, is aiming to reclaim his old job, while Jeff McLaughlin, a Sand Mountain lawyer and former legislator, is running for Attorney General.

Runoff Rumble?

Don't expect these races to be decided on May 19th! The buzz is that both the Attorney General and Agriculture Commissioner races are heading for a June runoff. Buckle up, folks, it's going to be a wild ride!

Stay Tuned!

These races are shaping up to be the most consequential, close, contentious, and interesting statewide showdowns this year! We'll keep you updated as the election season unfolds.

Dream Dress Becomes Reality for Shelby County Student!

A local Shelby County school, known for its dedication to special needs students for almost 50 years, recently witnessed a magical moment. A student's artistic dream blossomed into a prom night fairytale!

Holayn's Vision Takes Flight

Holayn Marandu, a bright 17-year-old from Linda Nolen Learning Center in Pelham, arrived at her 2026 prom in a stunning custom-made dress. The catch? It was inspired by her own beautiful drawing! This wasn't a solo project though; it took a village – educators, locals, and supporters from all over Alabama pitched in.

From Sketch to Spectacular

Holayn, an incredibly talented autistic artist, often uses her colorful and detailed drawings to express herself. So, when she dreamed up the perfect prom dress, she put pencil to paper.

A paraeducator, Cynthia Parker, saw the potential and posted the drawing online, hoping to find someone who could bring it to life.

Community Comes Together

The call was answered by Shondra Patterson, a Double Springs seamstress and owner of The Sewing Room. Shondra generously volunteered her time and skills, spending around 40 hours crafting the gown from chiffon, satin, and organza.

But it didn't stop there! The community rallied, providing resources and encouragement to help turn Holayn's vision into a reality.

Prom Queen Dreams

Holayn's reaction to seeing her design come to life was pure joy. Just weeks before, it was just an idea on paper! She didn't speak until she was about eight, but has since found her voice, often calling herself a "world-famous artist."

That confidence shone through as she walked into prom wearing her dress and was crowned prom queen!

More Than Just a Dress

This magical night perfectly reflected the spirit of the Linda Nolen Learning Center, a school dedicated to supporting special needs students through personalized learning and community involvement.

Founded in 1977, the school has grown into a leading resource in Shelby County, serving students ages 3 to 21 through diverse programs. They focus on preparing students mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally for independence while boosting their self-esteem – goals perfectly illustrated by Holayn's prom experience.

A Powerful Message

The project highlighted the amazing impact a school community can have. A simple online post connected educators with a talented seamstress and drew support from people who had never even met Holayn.

As the Linda Nolen Learning Center shared on Facebook, this event is a beautiful example of "the way we show up for one another in meaningful, lasting ways." It's a reminder that a supportive school environment, paired with an engaged community, can help students achieve incredible things.

Prom Dreams Do Come True!

A Shelby County school, known for its dedication to special needs students for almost 50 years, recently became the heart of an amazing community project. One student's artistic vision blossomed into a real-life prom night fairytale!

From Sketch to Stunner

Holayn Marandu, a 17-year-old student at Linda Nolen Learning Center in Pelham, arrived at her prom looking absolutely radiant in a custom-made dress. What made it even more special? It was based on her very own detailed drawing! The dress was a collaborative masterpiece, involving teachers, local residents, and awesome supporters from all over Alabama.

Art as Expression

Holayn, an incredibly talented autistic artist, often uses her colorful and intricate drawings as her main way to express herself. When she shared her dream dress design with the school, a paraeducator named Cynthia Parker posted it online, hoping someone could bring it to life.

Community Collaboration

The request went viral! Eventually, it reached Shondra Patterson, a talented seamstress from Double Springs. Shondra, owner of The Sewing Room, generously volunteered to create the dress. She poured about 40 hours into crafting the stunning gown using gorgeous materials like chiffon, satin, and organza. The community also rallied, offering resources and encouragement.

More Than Just a Dress

The dress was a showstopper, but Holayn's reaction to seeing her design come to life was truly magical. Just weeks before, it was only an idea on paper! Holayn, who didn't speak until she was around 8, has developed a strong and unique voice. She confidently calls herself a "world-famous artist"!

Prom Queen!

That confidence shone brightly on prom night. Holayn not only wore her dream dress, but she was also crowned prom queen! Classmates, staff, and supporters cheered her on. It was a beautiful moment reflecting the supportive environment at Linda Nolen Learning Center, a place dedicated to helping students with special needs thrive through individualized instruction and community involvement.

A Legacy of Support

Founded in 1977, the school has grown from a small program to a leading special education center in Shelby County. It serves students aged 3 to 21, with programs designed to meet diverse developmental and educational needs. The school focuses on preparing students mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally for independence while building self-esteem – a mission perfectly illustrated by Holayn's prom experience.

The Power of Community

The project demonstrated how quickly a school community can extend beyond its walls. The online post connected educators with a skilled seamstress and garnered support from people who had never even met Holayn! It showed "the way we show up for one another in meaningful, lasting ways," according to a Facebook post from the school. It was a powerful reminder of what can happen when a school's mission, a student's talent, and a community's compassion come together.
