Smooth Transition in Mobile: Keeping Connections Strong!

Mobile's seen some incredible growth in the last 13 years, and a big part of that is the solid relationship between our city leaders and the Governor's office in Montgomery.

Passing the Torch

As Mayor Sandy Stimpson wraps up his three terms, he's making sure that connection stays strong with our new Mayor, Spiro Cheriogotis. They recently teamed up to meet with Governor Kay Ivey.

Good Vibes All Around

From what we hear, the meeting was a total success!

Stimpson's Take

"Mobile's growth over the last 13 years would not have been possible without our strong support in Montgomery," Stimpson shared on his Facebook, "and I'm confident that Mayor-Elect Cheriogotis will continue to develop and maintain these crucial relationships." Governor Ivey even chimed in, saying, "Mobile's success is Alabama's success!"

Why This Matters

Ivey's support has been a game-changer, fueling economic development like Airbus, Austal, and the amazing expansion of the Port of Mobile.

What's Next?

Cheriogotis will officially take the reins from Stimpson on November 3rd. Looking ahead, Mobile will need continued support from Montgomery for projects like the I-10 Bayway, safety improvements on Highway 45, ongoing funding for the Amtrak Mardi Gras service, and smart spending of Gulf of Mexico (GOMESA) funds.

Looking to the Future

With Governor Ivey's term ending in early 2027, the 2026 election will be important. Mayor Cheriogotis aims to continue Stimpson’s legacy, and maintaining a strong relationship with the Governor (whoever that may be!) will be key.

A New Era Begins

Remember, Stimpson passed that metaphorical baton to Cheriogotis back on election night, signaling a commitment to continuity.

Background

Cheriogotis, formerly a District Judge, won the Mayoral runoff.

Keep an Eye Out!

Expect to see Stimpson and Cheriogotis connecting with potential gubernatorial candidates soon.

Montgomery Shooting Suspect Released: Seriously?!

Okay, ChumCity fam, let's talk about something that's got us all riled up. One of the suspects in that horrific mass shooting in Montgomery – you know, the one where 2 people lost their lives and 12 were injured – is already OUT OF JAIL. Are you kidding me?!

Alabama Law Needs a Serious Update

Apparently, Alabama law doesn't require mass shooting suspects (who also attempted murder!) to stay locked up. Even though, ya know, they're pretty clearly a risk to skip town and/or hurt more people. How is this even a thing?

Ivey & Reed Want Change (and So Do We!)

Both Governor Kay Ivey and Mayor Steven Reed are as shocked and appalled as we are. They're urging everyone to vote to expand Aniah’s Law next May. Let's make sure our voices are heard and help prevent this from happening again!

Alabama's Housing Market: Still Holding Strong!

Guess what, ChumCity peeps? Alabama's housing market is defying the usual fall chill! According to the Alabama Association of Realtors, things stayed pretty steady in September, thanks to those (slightly) easing mortgage rates.

Expert Take

Economist Evan Moore says even though folks were feeling a bit iffy about inflation and the economy in general, Alabama's job market is still a rockstar. And those lower mortgage rates? They helped keep those home sales humming! Plus, there's talk of potential rate cuts in 2025, which could give the market even more room to groove.

By the Numbers

  • Sales: 6,055 homes changed hands in September, a teeny-tiny bump from August and just a smidge down from last year.
  • Prices: The median sales price jumped to $235,246, up nearly 9% from last year!
  • Dollar Volume: We're talking $1.7 BILLION in total sales!
  • Inventory: Still a bit tight, but no major changes.

Mortgage Rate Relief?

Good news for buyers! The average 30-year fixed rate dipped to 6.26% in mid-September, offering a bit of breathing room.

Job Market Shine

Alabama's job market continues to be a bright spot, with the unemployment rate falling to a sweet 2.9%!

Economic Picture

Alabama's economy grew, but not as fast as other states in the second quarter. Fingers crossed for a comeback!

Alabama Libraries Eye Stricter Rules on Gender-Related Books

The Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) Board recently convened a public hearing to discuss a proposed rule that could shift books addressing "radical gender ideology" exclusively to adult sections. The aim? To keep libraries family-friendly and focused on education.

Keeping Libraries Family-Friendly?

APLS Chairman John Wahl emphasized the board's commitment to "education and encouraging reading, while respecting parental rights and protecting children from sexual content." The proposed rule seeks to close what some see as a loophole, extending existing restrictions on sexually explicit content to books on transgenderism.

The Proposed Ban

The new rule would potentially ban "any material that promotes, encourages, or positively depicts transgender procedures, gender ideology, or the concept of more than two biological genders" from children and youth sections.

Public Debate Heats Up

The hearing saw passionate arguments from both sides. Angie Hayden, cofounder of Read Freely Alabama, slammed the proposal as "gross government overreach" and discriminatory, asserting parents already have the right to supervise their children's reading choices.

Voices of Support

Conversely, other Alabama residents spoke in favor. Ted Holly, identifying as a "de-transitioner," argued that gender is assigned at birth and that children should be shielded from "inconsistent stories."

Public Opinion Leans Towards Change

Wahl noted that the public comments overwhelmingly supported the new rule. Out of 8,478 comments, nearly 80% favored the amendment.

A Stand for "Truth" and Children?

"This is about defending truth and the innocence of children," Wahl stated. He argued that Alabama is "taking a stand for biological reality, for parents, and for children’s right to grow up free from social agendas in their libraries."

What's Next?

The APLS Board will now pore over the public feedback and refine the amendment's wording before a final vote at their next meeting. The rule aims to put "parents back in control of what their children are exposed to.”

Bama's on a Roll!

The Alabama Crimson Tide is straight-up crushing it! They just snagged their fourth straight victory against a ranked team, becoming the FIRST EVER in SEC history to pull off that wild feat.

DeBoer's Building a Beast

Remember all the early-season chatter after that Florida State loss? Well, Kalen DeBoer has clearly worked some magic. This team is starting to look dangerous, reaching its potential. But get this: Coach DeBoer says they're still not at their peak!

Hungry for More

Ahead of their upcoming road game against South Carolina, DeBoer dropped this gem in his weekly press conference: "The world hasn’t seen Bama’s best yet." Can you feel the intensity?!

Facing the Gamecocks

DeBoer warns his squad to be ready for a hostile environment in South Carolina. It's all about preparation, focus, and bringing that A-game. They need to be clicking on all cylinders to take down LaNorris Sellers and his Gamecocks.

On the Rise

It's another huge test for Alabama, but they’re consistently improving each week. They're locked in on that ultimate goal: becoming the best version of themselves. Will we see Bama unleash their full power this week? We're ready to find out!

Tide's Ranked Rampage vs. Road Trip Woes

Kalen DeBoer's Crimson Tide know how to bring the heat against top-tier teams. Victories over Georgia (twice!), LSU, Missouri, and Vanderbilt prove it. DeBoer’s built a career on slaying ranked foes, boasting a stellar 19-3 record against them across his coaching stops. At Alabama, that trend's continued with a recent, impressive streak against ranked teams.

The Complacency Conundrum

The challenge? Getting the Tide fired up for opponents they should dominate, especially away from home. Remember those head-scratching losses against Vanderbilt and Oklahoma last year? Or that bowl game against Michigan? For whatever reason, DeBoer hasn't yet fully eradicated that lurking complacency – a trait Saban mastered.

Deja Vu at Florida State?

Now, Alabama heads to South Carolina, where a desperate Gamecocks squad awaits, hungry for a season-defining upset. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers is a serious threat, and the atmosphere will be electric.

A Defining Road Test

This game will reveal the true character of this Alabama team. Have they learned from past stumbles, or will complacency creep back in? If this Tide team is a true championship contender, they'll handle business. Regardless, we'll learn a lot about this team's mentality and the coaching staff's ability to keep them sharp.
