Death Valley's Hottest Temp: Fake News?

Hold on to your hats, Chumsters! A groundbreaking new study is shaking up the weather world. Two brainy scientists from the University of Alabama in Huntsville are questioning the validity of the world record hottest temperature: a scorching 134 degrees Fahrenheit, supposedly recorded in Death Valley, California, way back on July 10, 1913.

The Heat Is On!

Dr. Roy Spencer and Dr. John R. Christy dug deep into the historical and meteorological evidence surrounding that record. Their findings, published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, suggest the actual temperature that day was likely a far more reasonable 120 degrees F.

Did Someone Cheat the Thermometer?

For years, weather experts have eyed that 134-degree reading with suspicion. Spencer believes the true record should be a slightly cooler 130 degrees F, reached twice in recent years at the same Death Valley locale.

Historical Sleuthing

The researchers teamed up with climatologist William T. Reid, who spent ages poring over old photos and letters, to understand the measurement's backstory. The conclusion? The measurement might not have been taken with approved equipment, or even in an approved weather shelter! Dun dun duuuun!

Too Hot to Be True?

By comparing 100 years of temperature data from cooler, higher-elevation weather stations nearby, the scientists calculated how much hotter Death Valley should have been compared to those locations in July 1913. This analysis yielded a probable temperature of 120 +/- 2 degrees F.

The Foreman's Secret

The study suggests that Oscar Denton, the ranch foreman and volunteer weather observer, may have been recording temperatures from a poorly located thermometer on his veranda, not the official Weather Bureau instrument.

A Reputation to Uphold?

Spencer thinks Denton might have been inflating the readings to maintain Death Valley's scorching reputation, especially since claims of even hotter temperatures existed long before official equipment arrived.

Time for a New Record?

"While we will likely never know exactly how or why such hot temperatures were recorded, we have recommended that the world record status of that 134 degree F value be rescinded," Christy stated. The decision rests with the World Meteorological Organization, but this study certainly brings the heat!

Fueling Alabama's Future: Powering Growth!

What do companies look for when deciding where to invest and create jobs? Reliable, affordable energy, plain and simple!

A strong energy infrastructure is vital for every modern business. We're proud of Alabama's reputation for growth and innovation, but to stay competitive, we need energy systems ready for tomorrow.

Cutting Red Tape, Boosting Growth

That's why I introduced a key bill in the Powering Growth package to streamline energy project approvals and cut through unnecessary bureaucracy.

Project delays due to permitting bottlenecks are inefficient, costly, and delay essential project completion.

SB311: Keeping Progress on Track

My bill, SB311, establishes a clear timeline for ALDOT to review and decide on energy transmission project applications.

No action within the timeframe? Automatic approval! This gives businesses and developers the certainty needed to plan, invest, and build.

Alabama: A Partner in Progress

This reform ensures Alabama is a partner, not an obstacle, to progress. Modernizing our approach attracts investment, creates jobs, and keeps Alabama competitive.

More Than Just Power Lines

Energy infrastructure isn't just about electricity; it's about economic opportunity. Companies will ask: Can we count on Alabama's power grid?

A confident "yes" positions us to win projects and jobs.

Ready for Opportunity

The Powering Growth package prepares Alabama for the future. We'll be ready when opportunity knocks!

By cutting red tape and streamlining approvals, we're paving the way for energy dominance and economic prosperity.

Let's power growth, strengthen our competitiveness, and keep Alabama open for business!

Huntsville's HUGE Growth Spurt!

Huntsville's aiming for the stars (again)! They're planning a massive expansion, gobbling up 21,000 acres in Limestone County and developing another 24,000! Think 113,000 new homes, tons of office and industrial space, and plenty of retail therapy spots. The goal? A whopping 120,000 new jobs over the next half-century, plus upgrades to schools, the airport, and I-65. Talk about ambitious!

Alabama's Redistricting Drama Continues

Remember that court ruling about Alabama's voting map? State Rep. Chris Pringle is worried the fallout from drawing a seat specifically for a Black Democrat will haunt Alabama for generations. He's hoping the Supreme Court will step in and reverse it, depending on what happens in a similar Louisiana case. Stay tuned!

ALGOP Chair vs. the AEA: It's On!

Alabama GOP Chairman John Wahl's not mincing words. He agrees with a talk show host about the AEA's (metaphorical) "throat-slitting" agenda. Wahl's touting his victories, though, including bans on AEA/NEA donations to school boards and pledges against homeschool regulations. Power struggles continue!

Britt Demands End to Shutdown Shenanigans

Senator Katie Britt is fed up with the government shutdown (and who isn't?). She's joining the chorus of Republicans, union leaders, and frustrated voters demanding an end to the madness. Britt's specifically worried about the 750,000 Alabamians losing SNAP funding and is pushing a bill to fix SNAP/VA/police funding while pointing fingers at the Democrats' "shutdown games."

Birmingham Gets SNAP Boost

Rep. Terri Sewell is singing Birmingham's praises for investing $1 million in SNAP aid for the city. Meanwhile, things are less clear on the national level, with President Trump waffling on funding for SNAP after some earlier suggestions.

Ivey Steps Up for Food Banks

Gov. Kay Ivey's sending $2 million to food banks across all 67 counties while SNAP funding hangs in the balance. Plus, the Alabama Department of Human Resources is chipping in $3 million for food banks and giving $300 per child to over 11,000 kids in need. Good to see Alabama stepping up.

Blue Wave Sweeps Elections

Democrats had a good night! There was a series of wins in blue states. A socialist might be the mayor of NYC! Plus, New Jersey and Virginia got new Democratic governors, and California seems to have handed Democrats at least five U.S. House seats. Is this a signal of a shift?

Auburn's Coaching Carousel: Freeze Out, New Search On!

The Plains are buzzing! After a brutal home loss to Kentucky, Auburn has parted ways with football coach Hugh Freeze. Despite high hopes, it became clear things weren't clicking, and the hunt for a new leader is officially underway.

Cohen Takes the Reins

Athletic Director John Cohen is steering this ship. He addressed the media, explaining the timing of Freeze's departure and outlining the initial steps of the coaching search.

Myth vs. Reality: Booster Influence?

Things got spicy when Cohen was asked about the ever-present rumor of booster and donor meddling in Auburn's coaching decisions. He shut it down!

Cohen claimed, "That’s a little bit of a mystery to me...that has not been my experience in three years." He even threw a little shade, suggesting rival schools might be the source of the rumor. Ouch!

Cohen's Call: High Risk, High Reward?

Cohen made it crystal clear: he's in charge. This bold move could pay off, especially given the messy coaching searches elsewhere. By projecting stability, Auburn might just land a top-tier coach. Stay tuned, ChumCity, this is gonna be interesting!

Fort Payne's Village Raises a Playground!

They say it takes a village, and Fort Payne just showed the world how generous its village is! Tuesday morning saw smiling faces as city officials, community leaders, and a whole crew of volunteers gathered to snip the ribbon on a brand-spanking-new playground at Kiwanis Field, right next to the Wills Valley Recreation Center.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!

This awesome project was a total collaboration between the City of Fort Payne, the Kiwanis Club, and GameTime, our very own playground equipment gurus! They pooled their resources, donations, and some serious volunteer hours to raise about $130,000 and turn a shared dream into a vibrant reality.

Fun for Everyone!

The new playground boasts all sorts of goodies for kids of all ages: slippery slides, cool bridges, nifty ramps, challenging climbing walls, sturdy ladders, and adventurous climbing nets! It's a fantastic addition to all the recreational fun our community already offers.

Smiles All Around

"This was a full team effort," exclaimed GameTime President S. Spencer Cheak. "The Kiwanis Club really drove this thing, but GameTime, other businesses, and the city all came together. This is why we do what we do – to make kids happy and build strong communities!"

Community Pride!

Kiwanis Club President Brandon McBride gave a huge shout-out to everyone who helped make the project a success. "Everyone just worked through the rain and the mud," he said. "It just shows you what kind of community we live in, and I'm so proud to be a part of Fort Payne!" He even thanked the Fort Payne High School Key Club for helping spread mulch and prep the playground.

More to Come!

Mayor Brian Baine emphasized that the playground represents both perseverance and progress for Fort Payne. "I appreciate your persistence in getting this done," Baine said. "This is just the beginning of what we hope to accomplish - pickleball courts, and maybe even a splash pad down the road!" The playground is just phase one of a bigger plan that includes a walking trail and a dog park, with a total investment of around $600,000.

A Gift to the Community!

The Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce echoed the community's excitement, calling the playground "a true gift," offering families a safe and fun place to create memories for years to come. Get ready to play, Fort Payne!
