Gulf Distributing: A New Chapter in a Mobile Landmark!
Get ready, ChumCity! Gulf Distributing Co. just threw open the doors to its brand-spankin'-new headquarters right in the heart of downtown Mobile, inside the iconic Press-Register building. We're talking a massive $60 million investment that's all about growing the company while giving a major historical landmark some serious TLC!
Last week, the place was buzzing with a ribbon-cutting bash, co-hosted by the Mobile Chamber of Commerce. Big shots from the community, business world, and industry showed up to tour the restored facility and party it up downtown, spotlighting Gulf’s restaurant partners and favorite drink brands.
What's the Big Deal?
"We're super pumped to officially open our doors at Gulf’s new HQ in the old Press-Register building," gushed Louis Maisel, Gulf Distributing's COO. "This expansion marks a crazy-cool chapter for us – turning a downtown Mobile icon into a modern, cutting-edge hub where we'll keep crushing it with innovation, efficiency, and workforce growth."
This mega-facility, clocking in at 243,000 square feet, is now Gulf’s central command for everything from corporate stuff to training and distribution. Gulf brass says the renovation has turned the 1950s building into one of the most advanced beverage distribution centers in the whole Southeast. Woot!
Tech City!
Inside, you'll find a mind-blowing setup with automated storage, AI load recognition, and pallet microchip tracking – all designed to make things smoother and cut down on manual labor. The company says this tech will boost driver safety and efficiency while beefing up Gulf’s customer network all along the Gulf Coast.
Roots and Future
"This new headquarters brings us home," said Elliot Maisel, CEO and chairman. "It honors our family’s Mobile roots while setting Gulf up to better serve our customers and communities across Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and southern Mississippi."
Mayor Sandy Stimpson agrees. "Gulf Distributing is part of Mobile’s DNA," he said. "This project preserves a local landmark while creating jobs and pumping up the downtown economy. It’s a total game-changer!"
Giving Back
To kick off the opening, Gulf Distributing dropped $10,000 on Calloway-Smith Middle School, right near their new place.
"We want to be the best neighbors ever," said Maisel. "My mother, Freida Maisel, taught seventh grade in Mobile for 30 years before starting Gulf. Supporting Calloway-Smith is our way of honoring her legacy and starting a long, awesome relationship with the school."
A Downtown Toast
That evening, Gulf threw a public party in downtown Mobile, encouraging everyone to visit local bars and restaurants offering specials on their brands, like Miller Lite, Coors Light, Red Bull, Modelo, Twisted Tea, Abita, Yuengling, and White Claw.
"We’re proud to call downtown Mobile home, just steps from where it all began 50 years ago," Maisel added. "This is about more than just our company’s growth—it’s about honoring the people and partnerships that made us!"
The whole shebang was backed by public-private partnerships with UBCD, United Bank, Truist Community Capital, Truist Bank, and Regions Bank.
Founded way back in 1973 by Freida G. Maisel—Alabama’s first woman to own a beer distributorship—Gulf Distributing now rocks across Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and Mississippi. This family-owned business employs about 1,300 people and partners with over 140 suppliers.
