Elmore County Tax Hike Rejected!

Elmore County officials floated a plan: tacking on $150 per household and $300 per business annually. The goal? Patch up the crumbling prison and replace aging fire trucks. But voters gave a resounding "NO!"

Begging After Neglect?

It seems local leaders let things slide, allowing the jail and emergency equipment to deteriorate before finally pleading for cash.

Why the Rejection?

Voters clearly weren't feeling generous. Why would they hand over more money after what appears to be neglectful mismanagement?

Local Hero: Alabama Air National Guard Veteran Reflects on Service

For almost 30 years, Colonel David Etheredge soared through the skies with the Alabama Air National Guard. This Birmingham native, a former Commander of the 117th Maintenance Group, oversaw a crew of over 300 airmen. They were responsible for keeping KC-135R refueling aircraft in top condition, supporting vital missions across the globe.

From Family Reunions to the Flight Deck

Etheredge's love for aviation started young. Inspired by his father, an Army Reserve vet, and uncles who served in World War II, he knew he wanted to fly. "The Air Force was the best place to do that,” he says. Childhood memories of uncles visiting family reunions in Alabama sparked his dream. He earned his private pilot's license before joining the Alabama Air Guard in Birmingham. "I was selected to go to pilot training and fly the KC-135 air refuelers," he remembers. "That was in '93, and I retired in '22—so about 28 years and some change."

High-Flying Missions and Humbling Experiences

His career included combat and support missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also served as an Air Force accident investigator and safety officer. One memorable flight involved a medical evacuation from Guam to Hawaii after a B-2 bomber crash. “We landed, picked him up, and took him to Hawaii," he recalls. "We got him there, and he completely recovered. That was definitely one of the most rewarding missions.”

Recent Tragedy Hits Close to Home

Etheredge’s aviation safety background makes recent news of an MD-11 crash in Louisville particularly personal. He flies that same aircraft and knew two of the pilots involved. “It’s an absolute tragedy,” he shares. He's glad the MD-11 fleet has been grounded during the investigation.

Life After the Guard

Since retiring from the Guard in 2022, Etheredge continues to fly for UPS. He’d balanced both roles for years, making the transition smooth. "It’s actually a little easier now because I’m not out of town as much.”

What Veterans Day Means

For Etheredge, Veterans Day is about honoring everyone who's worn the uniform and served. "Not everybody’s deployed, but everybody’s made a sacrifice." He adds, "Most of my best friends are ex-military I’ve deployed with—it definitely builds a bond.” He's flown over 220 combat and support missions and logged over 10,000 military and civilian flying hours.

Advice for Aspiring Airmen and Airwomen

Etheredge advises young Alabamians considering military service to "do your research and realize what you’re getting into." He emphasizes the sacrifices involved but highlights the rewards, the camaraderie, and the excellent training offered. He encourages young people to consider the Air Guard, not just for flying, but for the diverse range of career paths it offers. "Whatever your interests or talents are, there’s a place for you. Even if you just want to do it for college money, it’s worth it.”

A Grateful Heart

After almost three decades, Etheredge reflects with gratitude. “It’s been extremely rewarding,” he says. “I don’t regret a single minute of it.”

ChumCity salutes Colonel Etheredge and all veterans for their service and sacrifice!

Alabama's mega-church, Church of the Highlands, is bringing its vibrant community to the Eastern Shore! Get ready, Daphne!

A New Campus is Coming!

A land dedication ceremony recently took place in Daphne, marking the beginning of a new, permanent campus. The church snagged about 27 acres for approximately $4.6 million at the corner of DISC Drive and U.S. Highway 181.

Meanwhile...

Worship services will continue at the Daphne Civic Center, where a whopping 850-900 folks gather every Sunday.

Highlands' Rise

Founded in 2001 by Chris Hodges, Church of the Highlands has exploded with over 20 locations across Alabama and Georgia. Before the pandemic, weekly attendance topped 50,000!

More Than a Church

Hodges also launched Highlands College in Birmingham back in 2011, training future ministry leaders. He's still the college's chancellor, leading the way!

Sewell Slams Senate's "Empty Promise" Funding Bill

U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) isn't pulling any punches when it comes to the Senate's latest attempt to end the government shutdown. Sewell blasted the bill, making her stance crystal clear.

"A HELL NO!"

"This so-called 'deal' is nothing more than empty promises," Sewell declared. Her biggest beef? She says the bill could hike up healthcare costs for millions of Americans.

The Senate's Move

On Monday, the Senate gave the thumbs-up to the government funding measure with a 60-40 vote. Eight Democrats crossed the aisle to join almost all the Republicans. The House is expected to vote, and if President Trump signs it, the shutdown is a goner.

Sewell's Concerns

Sewell's not having it, though. She wants funding for Obamacare subsidies that are expiring. In a video, she explained she won't back any budget that could raise healthcare costs. She sees the Senate bill as an "empty promise" from Republicans and criticizes the lack of ACA tax credit extensions.

Doubts About the GOP

The congresswoman didn't hold back on her feelings about her Senate colleagues who voted for the bill, either. She voiced skepticism about the Republicans' willingness to negotiate on healthcare later, adding that if the GOP doesn't deliver, they'll be responsible for soaring healthcare costs.

What's in the Bill?

Despite Sewell's concerns, the Senate-passed bill does ensure full-year military funding, which is a big deal for Alabama. It also keeps government agencies running and guarantees federal workers get their back pay.

Alabama Senate Race Heats Up!

The 2026 Senate race in Alabama is already generating buzz, and candidate Morgan Murphy is making a strong play to represent the state's veterans.

A Veteran's Champion?

Murphy, a 26-year veteran of the Navy Reserves, is touting endorsements from nearly 90 veterans across Alabama, all rallying behind his bid to succeed Tommy Tuberville in the U.S. Senate.

Support from the Ranks

"Morgan Murphy represents our values," declared Colonel Douglas "Cinco" Dimaio. He emphasized Murphy's "dedication and service to the nation," and urged Alabamians and fellow veterans to support him.

Experience Matters

Murphy brings a national security and foreign policy background to the table, with experience working for the current Senator and in both Trump Administrations.

Promises to Veterans

"Serving my country's military has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Murphy stated, promising to champion Alabama's 300,000+ veterans in the Senate. He vows to be their voice in D.C. and avoid sending Alabama's sons and daughters into "endless wars."

Big Names Backing Murphy

Murphy's campaign is already attracting endorsements from prominent figures in President Trump's national security circle, including former Sec of Defense Christopher Miller and others.

The Competition

The race is shaping up to be competitive, with Murphy facing off against U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, and former U.S. Navy SEAL Jared Hudson.

Trump Approves Shutdown Deal!

President Trump is all smiles over the "very good" bipartisan deal hammered out by Senator Katie Britt to end the government shutdown. Expect him to sign the bill and get things back on track ASAP!

Supreme Court Steps In!

The Supreme Court's thrown a temporary lifeline, halting a lower court ruling that would've allowed the Trump administration to pause SNAP benefits last November during the shutdown. Drama!

Senate's Suing?!

Buried in the spending bill ending the government shutdown is a juicy detail: seven Republican Senators, including Coach Tuberville, can now sue the feds for up to $500K each over those phone record shenanigans during Jack Smith's investigation.

Tuberville's Take

Governor-elect and Senator Tommy Tuberville thinks Dems will nuke the filibuster the second they retake the Senate. He's also pushing hard for voter ID and mail-in ballot restrictions for election integrity. Oh, and he thinks Schumer's future depends on AOC, not Schumer himself!

Fetterman Fires Back!

Senator John Fetterman is NOT having it with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Dems who are criticizing his vote to end the shutdown. He's not playing "chicken" with American lives, especially those SNAP-dependent Pennsylvanians!

Standing Up for Christians

Rep. Gary Palmer is joining forces with Rep. Riley Moore to condemn the horrific killings of Christians in Nigeria. They're calling it a human rights violation and genocide, demanding action while the UN sits on its hands.

NYC Councilwoman Invites Netanyahu

NYC Councilwoman Inna Vernikov is stirring the pot by inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the city. She's even daring Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to arrest him, fulfilling his campaign promise. Talk about a bold move!

Tide Roll Over LSU (Again!), But Are They REALLY Championship Material?

The Alabama Crimson Tide did it again, folks! They snagged another W against the LSU Tigers in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night, making it win number 13 in the last 15 matchups and an eighth straight victory this season since that opening week stumble.

Chasing Championships

With just three regular season games left, Bama's basically measuring the curtains for their spot in the SEC Championship (Texas A&M, anyone?). A win there pretty much guarantees a golden ticket to the College Football Playoff.

Not All Wins Are Created Equal

This team can look unstoppable, but the LSU game was another grind, especially against a struggling Tiger offense. The big problem? The Tide's ground game just can't seem to find its rhythm.

Finebaum Sounds the Alarm

ESPN's Paul Finebaum isn't pulling any punches, claiming this running game could derail Bama's championship dreams.

"Lackluster" Performance?

"Alabama did not look good (Saturday), they were lackluster," Finebaum declared on SportsCenter. "I am actually out on Alabama because of their running game. They just can’t get it going...They have one of the best quarterbacks, though, in Ty Simpson."

The Running Game Blues

Finebaum's worries aren't unfounded. Even in offensive explosions, the classic Bama power run just hasn't been there this year.

Balance is Key

To conquer the top teams and reach their ultimate goal, the Tide needs a functional running game. Without it, Finebaum's prediction might just come true, and the championship trophy will remain just out of reach.

Alabama Conservatives Back Ban on Intoxicating Hemp Products

Folks in the Yellowhammer State are cheering for a move in the Senate that aims to curb the sale of those intoxicating hemp goodies. Word is, conservatives are stoked about the potential end of "delta-8" and other similar products.

What's the Deal?

This provision is part of a Senate funding package that's also tied to ending the government shutdown. It's not a done deal yet; it still needs a thumbs-up from the House and a signature from the Prez. But the idea is to tighten up the definition of "hemp" to prevent anything other than naturally occurring derivatives with super-low THC levels (less than 0.3%) from slipping through the cracks.

Closing the "Hemp Loophole"

Think of it as closing the "hemp loophole" that the 2018 Farm Bill accidentally created. The proposed changes would count things like delta-8 and THCA toward the THC limit, and it also excludes anything that's synthesized or "manufactured" rather than coming straight from the plant. Plus, there's a cap on how much THC-like stuff can be in finished products, and a one-year grace period before the changes kick in.

Local Groups Weigh In

The Alabama Policy Institute said that Congress is finally putting an end to the "accidental" national legalization of THC that happened with the 2018 Farm Bill. They called it a "horrible" example of federal public policy that put a burden on state law enforcement.

The Eagle Forum of Alabama also celebrated the Senate's actions, saying it shuts down the loophole that allows "chemically altered intoxicants" to be sold like candy. They've been pushing for similar changes at the state level, too.

A Win for Alabama?

Becky Gerritson, Executive Director of Eagle Forum of Alabama, called the Senate's actions "an enormous win for public health and for the safety of our children," adding, "For too long, these dangerous products have sat openly on store shelves targeting teens, harming kids, and blindsiding parents."
