Auburn's Hottest New Spot: Olivine Has Arrived!

Get ready, ChumCity! Auburn's skyline just got a whole lot cooler. Olivine, the brand-new rooftop restaurant and cocktail lounge, is officially open atop the AC Hotel Auburn. Think Southern charm meets Southern European zest – it's refined, inviting, and totally Auburn.

Views and Vibes

General Manager Sloan Carter says Olivine aims to be a haven where friends, travelers, and locals can gather above the city and experience something special. It's got Alabama soul with a big-city feel, making it unlike anything else in town.

The sixth-floor perch offers stunning views of downtown, enjoyed in comfort and style. Heaters, fire pits, and a cool nano-door system mean it’s perfect year-round. Inside, soft lighting, unique art, and a live DJ set a warm, intimate mood. With space for 186, it’s roomy but still feels personal. Trust us, snag a spot outside – the sunset view of Samford Hall is pure magic.

Italian Flair, Southern Heart

Executive Chef Rick Yockachonis (formerly of Ma-Fias) is whipping up culinary wonders, blending Italian techniques with Southern flavors. He describes it as Neapolitan technique meeting Alabamian heart – expect every dish to surprise and comfort.

Shareable plates like Saffron Arancini and Ahi Crudo are a must, along with an amazing raw bar. Wood-fired pizzas, handmade pastas, and seasonal produce from local farms round out the menu.

Brunch fans, rejoice! Mascarpone whipped egg pancakes and Italian-style Benedicts await. Late-night? Roasted fig pizza, olives, cheeses, and wood-fired bread.

Cocktails That Wow

The Italian-inspired cocktail menu is the perfect pairing. Think Negronis, Pepperoncini Martinis, Italian Margaritas, and the smoky Vesuvio, finished with volcanic salt. Yum!

More Than Just a Restaurant

For the Olivine team, this spot is all about heritage, nostalgia, and modern vision. Food and Beverage Director Nick Wyatt says it’s about bringing together the warmth of the South and the soul of Southern Europe.

Olivine is open to everyone, not just hotel guests.

Carjackings on the Rise? We're Fighting Back!

Across the USA, families are feeling the pinch as violent carjackings skyrocket. It's scary, and frankly, we're not having it!

Even members of Congress have become targets! Carjackings against Reps. Scanlon and Cuellar show this isn't just a "big city" problem anymore.

A Bipartisan Solution is Here!

That's why we're stoked to announce the Federal Carjacking Enforcement Act! It's a bipartisan effort with Congressmen Cuellar and Kustoff to put the brakes on this crime wave.

What's the Problem?

Right now, federal prosecutors have to jump through hoops to bring carjackers to justice. They have to prove the bad guy intended to cause death or serious harm. Talk about a high bar!

This crazy requirement is actually a mistake from way back in the 1994 Crime Bill! It's been tying prosecutors' hands for far too long.

The Fix Is In!

Our legislation ditches that outdated "intent" nonsense and replaces it with a simple "knowingly" standard. This gives prosecutors the tools they need to hold these thugs accountable.

We're keeping the heavy penalties for cases where someone gets killed, but we're removing the ridiculous hurdles that let too many criminals walk free.

Stronger Laws, Safer Streets

This bill brings federal law in line with what's already working in most states, and gets back to the tough-on-crime approach Congress always intended. It's a win for everyone, and it's about time!

Law Enforcement is On Board!

Top law enforcement groups, like the National District Attorneys Association and Major County Sheriffs, are backing this effort because they know this fix is desperately needed.

Time for Action!

America's families deserve to feel safe, and prosecutors deserve the tools to protect them. Violent criminals deserve to face justice. The Federal Carjacking Enforcement Act delivers on all fronts!

The Uniquely American Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving. It's our holiday, right? Sure, other countries have days of prayer or thanks, but nothing quite matches our turkey-fueled, family-filled tradition. Over in Europe, they might raise an eyebrow at dedicating an entire day to simply being thankful. They're busy celebrating battles won and harvests reaped!

Why All the Gratitude?

Why does America, of all places, set aside a day to be thankful? Maybe it's because acknowledging gratitude requires a bit of humility. It's admitting we didn't do it all alone, that some help or blessing along the way made the difference.

The "Self-Made" Myth

We've all met someone who thinks they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps. They see their success as solely their own doing, forgetting the countless others who helped them along the way. For them, Thanksgiving might just be a cultural obligation – going through the motions without real feeling. Sound familiar?

A Divine Hand in Things

But here's the truth: Nobody is truly "self-made," and no success happens in a vacuum. The early American settlers understood this well. They recognized the importance of community effort, and the hand of a Divine Creator that ensured their crops flourished.

Thanksgiving in the Age of Science

So, where does that leave us in the 21st century? Can we still find meaning in Thanksgiving beyond the turkey and trimmings? Absolutely! Even if we can be thankful for friends, family, and colleagues, there's often something more outside ourselves that deserves acknowledgment.

God at the Table?

Is it ignorant or backwards to bring God back into Thanksgiving? Not at all! The trendy nihilism of atheism is fading, replaced by a growing recognition among thinkers and scientists that a higher power created the world.

A Return to Roots

Maybe we're simply rediscovering a truth that was accepted for most of history: that we are not self-made, and our meaning comes from a source beyond ourselves.

Gratitude in the 21st Century

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let's embrace its uniqueness. Let's be thankful for our food, family, and friends. But let's also acknowledge those unseen blessings, the close calls, and the inexplicable good fortune. Let's give thanks for God's provision, guidance, and love.

Gratitude in All Circumstances

Even in the face of adversity, gratitude is possible. Let's bring God back to our table this Thanksgiving and acknowledge the countless "micro-blessings" we often take for granted.

Huntsville PD: Leveling Up Forensic Science!

Ever wonder how evidence spills its secrets? It's not magic, folks! It takes sharp minds and even sharper tech to make those clues sing. And Huntsville PD? They're singing a whole new tune these days!

From Film to Flash Drives: A Forensic Evolution

Forget dusty film rolls! HPD has rocketed from old-school methods to zippy mobile data extraction and digital wizardry. Think "CSI: Huntsville" – but real!

More Than Just a Building: The New Crime Scene Complex

The fancy new Crime Scene and Evidence Warehouse Complex isn't just brick and mortar. It's HPD's pledge to handle every crumb of evidence with care, bringing justice with laser precision.

Huntsville's Growing – And So Is Its Crime-Solving Tech

As Huntsville explodes, so does the science behind solving crime. And you betcha, HPD is on the cutting edge!

Back to Basics: Where it all Began

Before forensics was all the rage, dedicated investigators solved crimes the old-fashioned way: cameras, measuring tapes, and good old-fashioned detective work.

Seasoned Skills

"We learned from the best," says former Investigator Lisa Hamilton. "The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences was always there to lend a hand."

The Core Still Counts

Back then, digital evidence? Non-existent! It was all about fingerprints, trace evidence, and firearms analysis. And guess what? Those skills are still gold!

Old School + New School = Winning!

"New tools are great, but the old ones still matter," Hamilton said. "We solved cases way before smartphones and DNA. A perfectly placed fingerprint? Still powerful!"

Don't Forget Where You Came From!

As HPD's forensics team grows, Hamilton hopes they never lose sight of those crucial roots. "Don't forget the basics," she urges. "Old tools are just as vital!"

Solving Crimes, One Gigabyte at a Time

HPD's digital forensics game really kicked into high gear in 2019 with the North Alabama Multi-Agency Crime Center. Investigator Byron Thompson, a U.S. Secret Service Academy alum, helped lead the charge into the digital frontier.

Exponential Growth

"The field has changed massively," Thompson explains. "It used to be just computers. Now we need experts in everything – phones, tablets, even smartwatches!"

Cracking the Code

The workload has exploded. From just 38 devices processed in 2020, they expect to smash 550 by the end of 2025! Three examiners are working hard supporting HPD and their partners.

Faster, Better, Stronger Tech

"Software and hardware upgrades have transformed what we can access and how quickly," Thompson says. "It helps us find the intel investigators need."

The Unbreakable Devices

Still, some devices refuse to yield their secrets. "Even with all this tech, some systems stay locked down," Thompson admits. "It makes me think: What haven't I tried yet?"

Accuracy Above All Else

Digital forensics isn't about speed; it's about accuracy. Every single byte matters.

Next Up: Automotive Forensics!

Get ready for it: As more drivers sync their phones to their cars, HPD expects a surge in requests for automotive data. But don't worry, they're already trained and ready to roll!

Leading the Forensic Frontier

The future of forensics is only accelerating, and HPD isn't getting left in the dust. They're committed to investing in their team, technology, and facilities to stay ahead of the curve.

The Crime Scene & Evidence Warehouse Complex

The new Crime Scene & Evidence Warehouse Complex is a cornerstone of that commitment, providing investigators with modern labs, secure storage, and plenty of room to work smarter.

A Promise to Huntsville

It's also a promise to the residents of Huntsville that every piece of evidence will be treated with care, every case pursued with unwavering integrity, and every advancement leveraged to strengthen trust and ensure justice in our community.

Hit the Road Safe This Thanksgiving, Chumsters!

Alabama's ready to roll out the welcome mat – and the watchful eyes of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) – for a Thanksgiving filled with family, friends, and fantastic feasts! But before you pack up the car and crank up the tunes, let's talk road safety. With extra cars hitting the asphalt, thanks in part to those lingering airline kerfuffles, ALEA is stepping up its game to keep everyone cruising smoothly.

More Troopers on Patrol!

Expect to see a whole lotta Troopers and specialized units keeping an eye on things. Their mission? To discourage risky driving, cut down on crashes, and get you to Grandma's house safe and sound.

Words from the Wise

"This time of year is all about loved ones," says ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. "Let's all commit to safe driving. Slow down, stay focused, buckle up, and NEVER drive impaired. You're not just protecting your family, but everyone on the road!"

Road Construction? Fuggedaboutit!

ALDOT's doing their part too, putting the kibosh on temporary lane closures on interstates from Wednesday, Nov. 26th, through Sunday, Nov. 30th. Less congestion, safer travels – win-win!

Top Safety Tips for a Smooth Ride:

ALEA's keeping a close watch on these key culprits that can cause trouble:

Distracted Driving: Eyes on the Prize!

Full car, hyped-up kiddos? We get it. But stay focused!

  • Secure those little ankle-biters and belongings before you drive.
  • Designate a co-pilot to handle phone calls, navigation, and backseat requests.
  • Put down the phone! No texting, scrolling, or Insta-stories behind the wheel.

Impaired Driving: Just Don't Do It!

Zero tolerance, folks. Zero.

  • Never drive under the influence. Period. That includes prescription meds that might mess with your focus.
  • Plan ahead! Sober driver, ride-share, whatever it takes.
  • See someone driving erratically? Dial 911 ASAP.

Aggressive Driving: Chill Out, Chum!

Traffic's a drag, we know. But losing your cool puts everyone at risk.

  • Leave yourself plenty of travel time.
  • Stick to the speed limit.
  • Maintain a safe following distance.
  • Yield the right-of-way and avoid those road rage moments.

Buckle Up: Every Seat, Every Time!

The simplest, most effective way to prevent serious injury.

  • Click it before you go!
  • Make sure kids are properly secured in car seats or boosters.
  • Seatbelts save lives!

One Last Word

Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) sums it up best: "Let's all do our part to keep our highways safe this Thanksgiving!"

So, buckle up, drive safe, and have a fantastic holiday!

Doug Jones Eyes Alabama Governor's Mansion in 2026!

Get ready, Alabama! Former U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) is reportedly making moves toward a run for Governor in 2026. Talk about a potential political showdown!

Paperwork Filed, Dems Rallying

According to reports, Jones has quietly filed the necessary paperwork with the Alabama Secretary of State's Office, officially signaling his intentions. Word on the street is that key Democrats are already lining up to support his bid.

"Leadership That Listens"

Jones' campaign confirmed the filing, stating he believes Alabama "deserves leadership that listens, unites, and delivers real results." Strong words!

Big Names Backing Jones

U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) and Alabama House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels (D-Huntsville) are singing Jones' praises. Sewell believes he'll boost the entire Democratic ticket, calling him a "terrific senator" with the "smarts, connections, and dogged determination." Daniels highlighted Jones' pro-worker stance, suggesting many Alabamians are seeking alternatives.

Tuberville Camp Fires Back

Senator Tommy Tuberville's spokesperson, Mallory Jaspers, didn't mince words. "Last time Doug Jones ran against Coach Tuberville, it didn’t go well for Doug," she stated. Ouch! She also touted Tuberville's fundraising and endorsements.

Tough Road Ahead?

Remember, Tuberville defeated Jones handily in 2020. Tuberville's team boasts a hefty campaign war chest, and Jones faces a crowded primary field. The Democratic primary is slated for May 19, 2026, with a possible Tuberville/Jones rematch in the general election on November 3, 2026. Stay tuned, ChumCity peeps! This is gonna be a wild ride!

Auburn's Coaching Carousel Keeps Spinning!

The Auburn Tigers are still on the hunt for their next head coach after parting ways with Hugh Freeze. All eyes are glued to AU Athletic Director John Cohen as he navigates this crucial decision.

Sumrall to the Plains?

From the moment the change happened (and maybe even before!), Jon Sumrall's name has been buzzing around the Plains. The Tulane coach, formerly of Troy, is a rising star in the coaching world, practically guaranteed to land a big job this cycle. Many predict that job will be at Auburn.

The Perfect Fit?

The word on the street isn't just that he's likely to be the next Tigers coach, but that he's the best choice.

Pat Dye 2.0?

College football insider Andy Staples recently dropped some serious praise on Sumrall, even drawing a comparison that'll get Auburn fans fired up.

Staples stated that Sumrall "kinda feels built in a lab to be the spiritual successor to Pat Dye. He’s a defensive guy, he’s from Huntsville, his teams play incredible defense, they’re tough, he won two conference titles at Troy…he might be in the playoff [with Tulane]."

Is it a Done Deal?

With all the connections between Sumrall and Auburn, it almost feels like a major surprise if the Tigers went in another direction.

Cohen's still doing his due diligence, but all signs are pointing toward Jon Sumrall taking the reins of the Auburn Tigers. Stay tuned, ChumCity, this is getting interesting!
