Montgomery Gets a Safety Boost Thanks to "Troop Zero"!

Governor Kay Ivey and ALEA (Alabama Law Enforcement Agency) are making waves in Montgomery! They recently wrapped up the initial "Troop Zero" enforcement detail in Montgomery County while also expanding the Capitol Patrol Unit's operations.

These initiatives are all about deterring bad driving, cracking down on crime, and generally making Montgomery – especially the Capitol Complex and downtown hotspots – safer for everyone.

Governor Ivey's Stance

“Public safety? It's our top job! We're committed to keeping our Capital City and the whole state safe," says Governor Ivey. She also gave a shout-out to the ALEA folks for their hard work, stating "We continue to see strong results.”

What Exactly Did "Troop Zero" Do?

This high-visibility operation was launched after the downtown shootings in October. With support from the Governor and Legislature, ALEA deployed patrols on I-65, I-85, and other major routes. Their goal? Boost traffic safety, help local partners, and discourage criminal activity.

From October 25 to November 5, Troopers made 1,608 vehicle stops, dishing out 2,006 citations and 681 warnings. These efforts aimed to prevent crashes, save lives, and curb illegal stuff happening on Montgomery's busiest roads.

Capitol Patrol Unit Steps Up

During the same time, ALEA's Capitol Patrol Unit also expanded its reach, providing extra security around the State Capitol Complex and nearby areas – Riverfront Park, restaurants, hotels, and event venues included!

In just 12 days of targeted enforcement, the Capitol Patrol members:

  • Had 1,121 traffic encounters (stops and citations combined!)
  • Made 2 felony arrests
  • Made 1 DUI arrest
  • Had 2,197 total citizen interactions (foot patrols, assistance, and community engagement)

These measures have noticeably deterred crime, protected state property, and made residents, visitors, and businesses feel safer in downtown Montgomery.

Appreciation and Future Plans

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor praised the strategic coordination and support from Governor Ivey and legislative leaders. Troop Zero aimed to create a safe environment by being courteous, enforcing traffic laws, and showing zero tolerance for bad behavior.

ALEA’s DPS Director, Colonel Jonathan Archer, also acknowledged the Troopers' dedication, highlighting how they served away from their homes to support Montgomery.

As the holiday season approaches, ALEA will continue targeted enforcement and security operations throughout Montgomery. Both MACS and Capitol Patrol will maintain a strong presence to protect downtown businesses, holiday shoppers, and visitors.

ALEA Secretary Taylor concluded, “The citizens of Montgomery can trust that we will be working around the clock to keep them safe this holiday season."

Bruce Pearl Heads to T-Town!

Hey ChumCity! Get ready, because former Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl is bringing the heat to Tuscaloosa on December 4th.

What's He Up To?

Pearl will be chatting with college students about the importance of a rock-solid relationship between the U.S. and Israel. The College Republican Federation of Alabama (CRFA) is making it happen.

Gen Z Talks Israel

CRFA Chairman Riley McArdle mentioned that the U.S.-Israel connection is a major conversation starter for Gen Z these days. Students have questions, and the CRFA wants to create a space for open discussion.

"Bringing the Truth"

McArdle shared that Coach Pearl was enthusiastic about bringing the "truth" to the table. The CRFA is pumped to facilitate meaningful dialogue, and they're thankful Pearl is willing to share his insights.

Important Voice

Pearl, a prominent figure in Alabama's Jewish community, is stepping up as young conservatives navigate their views on U.S. support for Israel.

Longtime Supporter

After retiring in September, Pearl took on the role of chairman for the U.S. Israel Education Association's board back in April. He's been a long-time advocate for the strong bond between the two nations.

Event Deets

Mark your calendars! The forum is set for December 4th at 80 p.m. in UA's North Lawn Hall. It's free and open to everyone!

Security Note

CRFA wants everyone to know there will be security screenings, and a strict no-bag policy will be in effect.

Right-Wing Rumbles: Time to Unite, Says Alabama GOP Chair

Is the Right eating itself alive? With fiery feuds dominating headlines – Trump vs. his former allies, policy clashes, even the Epstein files – Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl is sounding the alarm. He's urging conservatives to refocus on the real battle.

Ditch the Drama, Focus on the Fight

Wahl, speaking on "Rightside Radio," implored Republicans to band together against the Left. "We've all got to step back, take our eyes off of each other and look at our enemy, which is not other people within the party," he emphasized.

Stop the Squabbling!

Whether it's disagreements between big names like Massie and Trump, or the latest spat involving Greene and Carlson, Wahl says it's time to pump the brakes. "Stop and say, 'Look, we Republican conservatives…people who genuinely care about America and actually believe in the Constitution and limited government.'"

Internal Debates vs. Public Spats

As a top GOP official, Wahl recognizes that disagreements are inevitable, but he believes public displays of disunity are a gift to the Democrats. “We’ve got to stop fighting with each other and keep in mind who a real enemy is, and it is the Godless, American-hating socialist left," he declared.

Keep It Behind Closed Doors

Wahl suggested that debates are healthy, but they should happen privately. "We need to have those conversations, but I think they need to be more behind closed doors."

A Big Tent... With Firm Foundations

Wahl believes the Republican Party can welcome diverse voices, but only if everyone agrees on core principles. "Don't come in and try to change our platform," he warned. "But as long as you're willing to stand on Republican values and for freedom and liberty, we embrace you."

Alabama's Education Funding Face-Off: Insurance or Raises?

Get ready for some serious budget battles in Montgomery! Alabama lawmakers are heading into the 2026 legislative session with a major headache: the skyrocketing cost of health insurance for public educators. House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter is sounding the alarm, saying the Public Education Employees’ Health Insurance Plan (PEEHIP) is gobbling up cash that should be going to our schools.

The Numbers Don't Lie

According to Ledbetter, PEEHIP's costs are projected to jump by a whopping $380 million this year, on top of a $160 million increase last year. That's over half a BILLION dollars in just two years! Where's that money coming from? Well, it's squeezing the budget for everything else, from teacher pay raises to new school buses. Ouch.

Why the Price Hike?

What's driving these costs through the roof? Ledbetter says it's a combination of factors, including increased medical usage and the general rise in healthcare costs across the nation. Reports also point to rising Medicare retiree coverage expenses and hospital costs as major culprits. It's not just one thing, it's a perfect storm of financial pressures.

What's the Plan?

Lawmakers are already meeting with PEEHIP officials and budget gurus to brainstorm solutions. Speaker Ledbetter says they have some ideas brewing, and PEEHIP might even have to dip into its own reserves to help cover the shortfall. But make no mistake, the legislature will have to make some tough decisions.

The Big Question: What Gets the Green Light?

This whole mess raises a crucial question: what do we prioritize? Last year, lawmakers chose to fund PEEHIP instead of giving teachers a pay raise. This time around, they're faced with the same agonizing choices:

  • Cover the rising cost of insurance (again)
  • Prioritize a pay raise for teachers
  • Try to do both (somehow!)
  • Do nothing and risk hiking up insurance premiums

The clock is ticking, and the 2026 session is just around the corner. Get ready for some heated debates and, hopefully, some smart solutions that benefit Alabama's educators and students!

Data Centers: Boom or Bust for Alabama?

We're seeing a ton of buzz about massive data centers setting up shop in the Southeast. Billions of dollars, tons of jobs – sounds amazing, right? But before we get too excited, let's talk about what it really means for us Alabamians: our electric bills, our power reliability, and whether we'll end up footing the bill for Big Tech's infrastructure.

What's the Deal with Data Centers?

Think of data centers as the brains behind everything digital. Streaming movies, sending emails, even asking AI a question – it all relies on these massive facilities. We're talking serious size. A small one is 50,000 square feet, but the mega-centers? Over 4 million square feet! They guzzle power like crazy and use millions of gallons of water daily.

Alabama's on the Radar

We're already seeing it here. Meta's building a huge facility in Montgomery, and there's talk of an even BIGGER project in Bessemer. These projects bring jobs and tax revenue. Meta's Montgomery spot is projected to generate big bucks for the state. Plus, some of these companies are using renewable energy, which could boost Alabama's energy mix without costing us extra.

The Catch?

Making sure these benefits actually happen and last is the tricky part. We need to look out for the communities hosting these projects and ensure Alabama Power customers don't get stuck with the bill.

Learning from Others

Cities like Atlanta are data center hubs, but they've also faced problems: rising utility bills, strained resources, and community concerns. We can learn from their mistakes and avoid the same pitfalls.

Keeping Costs Down

The goal is simple: Alabama families and small businesses shouldn't be burdened with the costs. We're making sure data centers pay for the resources they use. We are requiring verification of proposed demand, long-term contracts, and upfront reimbursement of costs.

Protecting Our Power Grid

These massive centers put a huge strain on our electric grid and water supplies. We need to make sure Alabama Power is prepared and that our service stays reliable.

Setting the Standard

Alabama isn't behind the curve – we're in a prime position to set the standard! Now's our chance to implement best practices before things get crazy. No free rides for Big Tech! Those driving up the costs should be the ones paying for them. This is a pivotal moment for our state and our future.

Tuberville Champions Veterans' Rights!

Senator Tommy Tuberville is scoring a win for Alabama's veterans! He's praising the recent Senate passage of his bill designed to cut through the red tape for veterans who've been victims of fraud.

No More Bureaucratic BS

Teaming up with Senator John Boozman, Tuberville introduced the Veteran Fraud Reimbursement Act. This awesome legislation lets the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) actually help defrauded veterans get their money back, without making them jump through a million hoops. It cruised through the Senate with unanimous consent on Thursday!

Righting a Wrong

"We wish everyone was honest, but some dirtbags target our veterans," Tuberville said. "This bill is about making things right and ensuring our disabled veterans aren't left high and dry if someone steals their benefits."

Streamlining Reimbursements

Previously, a VA report highlighted ridiculously long wait times for veterans to get reimbursed. Some even passed away before seeing a dime! The new act will allow the VBA to analyze misuse cases statistically, determining negligence rates and streamlining the reimbursement process. This becomes a quality assurance measure, meaning vets get their money faster.

Continuing the Fight

This builds on Tuberville's past efforts to support veterans, including the Supporting Families of the Fallen Act and improvements to the post-9/11 GI Bill.

A Small Step, a Big Impact

"Making the government work better for our veterans is always top of mind," Tuberville stated. "This bill is one step, and I'm thrilled the Senate passed it. I hope the President will sign it into law pronto!"

Ivey & Ledbetter Score Victory Against AHSAA!

Alabama's Governor Kay Ivey and Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter are doing a happy dance! They've just snagged a win in their ongoing court battle against the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA).

The Issue: Keeping Kids on the Field

The AHSAA tried to enforce a new rule forcing student-athletes who transfer schools using CHOOSE Act funds to sit out a year before playing. Ivey and Ledbetter weren't having it.

Court Sides with the Kids!

Earlier this month, a Montgomery County judge granted a temporary restraining order against the AHSAA's rule, thanks to Ivey's motion. And now, the court is keeping that order in place!

"Let the Kids Play!"

"Our mission is to simply let the kids play!" Ivey and Ledbetter exclaimed in a statement. "We have been open to working with the AHSAA all along to ensure they do not unfairly and unlawfully discriminate against our CHOOSE Act student-athletes... We look forward to finding a permanent solution.”

What's Next?

Expect state lawmakers to discuss potential reforms to the AHSAA during the next legislative session. Stay tuned for more on this developing story!
