After 21 years, Opelika is saying goodbye to Mayor Gary Fuller and hello to Eddie Smith! The election results are in, and Smith has clinched the mayoral seat, leaving challengers Raven Harvis and Herman G. Barnes III in the dust. Unofficial tallies show Smith snagging a solid 4,154 votes (that's about 56%), while Harvis pulled in 3,155 (roughly 43%), and Barnes secured 115. Looks like Opelika has spoken! "Thank you to everyone who came out last night to celebrate the hard work of a long campaign season," Smith shared in his victory statement. "It was a joy to be surrounded by my friends and family as we heard the results. I am so honored and blessed. Thank you Opelika!" Smith is no stranger to Opelika politics. He's been rocking the City Council since '04 and served as its prez for a whopping 16 years! This win marks a major shift, as it's the first new face in the mayor's office since Fuller took over back in 2004. A true local, Smith graduated from Opelika High, spent time at Auburn University and LSU School of Banking, and has spent 4 decades crushing it in local banking. Smith's not just about business; he's all about giving back! He's been involved in everything from Envision Opelika to the Jaycees, Kiwanis, and United Way of Lee County. He's also been the longtime treasurer of the Lee County Youth Development Center. Smith is scheduled to be sworn into office this November, so get ready for a new era in Opelika!Opelika Gets a New Mayor!

Hold on to your hats, ChumCity! The Alexander City mayoral race is going down to the wire! No candidate managed to snag a majority in Tuesday's election, meaning we're headed for a runoff showdown. Incumbent Mayor Curtis "Woody" Baird took the lead with 1,482 votes (42.7%), but businessman and pastor Mike Densmore is hot on his heels with 1,086 votes (31.3%). City Council President Audrey "Buffy" Colvin put up a strong fight with 901 votes (26.0%). Out of a total of 3,469 ballots, Baird finished just 396 votes ahead of Densmore. Talk about a nail-biter! Baird, who's been mayor since 2020, is looking for a second term. However, his first term hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows. Residents have been raising concerns about the city's drinking water, reporting some not-so-pleasant experiences. Plus, things have been a bit tense with the City Council lately, which is never a good thing. Densmore, a familiar face as a local pastor and businessman, is ready to shake things up. And Colvin, as City Council president, definitely knows the ins and outs of city government. The runoff election between Densmore and Baird is scheduled for September 23, 2025. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is doubling down on his commitment to protect children from what he calls "radical transgender ideology" in schools. Marshall has joined a 22-state coalition to challenge a Massachusetts school district's policy allowing students to "socially transition" without their parents' knowledge or consent. "Parents don't lose their rights when their kids enter school," Marshall stated, blasting the idea of government officials keeping "life-altering decisions" secret from moms and dads. The case revolves around Ludlow Public School in Massachusetts, where parents Stephen Foote and Marissa Silvestri allege the school secretly promoted their children’s “social transition.†The school went as far as using new names and pronouns for the children, even after the parents requested to be kept in the loop. According to the lawsuit, a school counselor held private chats with the students, even suggesting they weren't safe at home! Marshall believes these actions are particularly disturbing, especially considering Alabama's findings regarding the medical industry and advocacy groups pushing to medicalize children. He's urging the Supreme Court to affirm that parents, not schools with "woke agendas," have ultimate authority over their kids. The coalition's brief asks the Supreme Court to review and overturn a lower court ruling that supported the school's policy. They argue that the First Circuit's decision ignores centuries of tradition recognizing parents' rights to direct their children's care and upbringing. Schools shouldn't be able to make decisions that encroach on parental power without consent. Marshall has consistently championed parental rights on this issue, leading previous efforts to defend policies protecting children. Attorneys general from numerous states, including West Virginia, Florida, and others, have joined Montana in this legal push.Alabama AG Fights for Parental Rights in Landmark Case

A dark cloud hangs over Minneapolis as a shooting at Annunciation Catholic PreK-8 School has left two young students, ages 8 and 10, dead and seventeen others injured. The unthinkable happened Wednesday morning during Mass, on what was only the first week back to school. Authorities say the attack was a premeditated act of violence. The alleged shooter, 23-year-old Robert "Robin" Westman, fired into the school through the windows. The FBI is on the case, investigating the shooting as a possible act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime targeting the Catholic community. Across the nation, people are grieving this senseless tragedy. Alabama's elected officials are sending their thoughts and prayers to everyone affected. Governor Kay Ivey has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in Alabama until the week's end in remembrance of the victims. She stated the state stands united in prayer during this difficult time. Senator Katie Britt also expressed her condolences, saying the victims and their families are in her prayers. Senator Tommy Tuberville echoed those sentiments, offering prayers for all those touched by the violence. Congressman Barry Moore called the incident 'horrific.' President Trump has issued a formal proclamation to honor the victims of this tragedy. Prior to the attack, Westman, who identified as transgender, posted images of weapons and magazines online containing messages like "Kill Trump Now!", "Burn Israel," and "Where is your God?". Westman ultimately died by suicide at the scene. Reports indicate his mother is a retired former employee of Annunciation.Tragedy in Minneapolis: School Shooting Claims Young Lives

Get ready, ChumCity! College football is BACK, and that means Saturdays (and Fridays!) drenched in glorious gridiron action. But hold on a sec... a TV tug-of-war might leave you sidelined. Both our beloved Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers are hitting the field this week, but a battle royale between YouTube TV (owned by Google) and FOX is threatening to block the view. Google's hinting at yanking FOX from its streaming service just as the season kicks off! That's right, folks! Auburn's Friday night face-off against Baylor is a FOX broadcast. And that Texas-Ohio State mega-matchup during Big Noon Kickoff? Also on FOX! YouTube TV subscribers are sweating bullets, unsure if they'll catch a single snap. U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) is NOT having it. She's called the whole situation "unacceptable" and told Google to get its act together. "It’s unacceptable that during SEC opening weekend, many fans wanting to cheer on Auburn against Baylor might not be able to watch," Britt stated. "I hope Google resolves this quickly to keep Fox channels on [YouTube TV]." This whole mess is still unfolding, but with heavy hitters like Senator Britt speaking up, maybe — just maybe — Google and FOX will play nice and let us watch our teams dominate!
