Meet Rep. Susan DuBose: A Voice for Alabama
State Rep. Susan DuBose (R-Hoover) views public service as a true calling. This Mississippi native, with a background in finance and years as a stay-at-home mom, has become a respected voice in Montgomery, blending conservative values with a genuine commitment to listening to her constituents.
"A Call, Not Just a Job"
"It’s the honor of my lifetime," she says about representing Alabama House District 45. "I don’t even think of it as a job; I think of it as a call."
Accomplishments That Make a Difference
What is she most proud of? A new law she sponsored that raises the age of medical consent from 14 to 16.
"Alabama had an anomaly," she explained. Before, 14-year-olds could make all their own medical decisions, and parents couldn't access records or speak to doctors. "It was really backwards… So, this year we were able to vote and change that to 16."
This law, effective October 1, 2025, will empower parents to support their children during medical crises. DuBose acted after hearing from parents shut out of crucial healthcare decisions.
"I heard so many sad stories from parents that could not intervene or help their children because doctors could not discuss their care with them."
Small Moments, Big Impact
But for DuBose, legislative wins aren’t everything. She values helping individual constituents, whether it's resolving SNAP benefit issues or helping a cancer patient get a STAR ID. "Just stuff like that, that makes a one-on-one impact… I feel as proud of those little individual moments as the big pieces of legislation."
Inspired by Women Leaders
DuBose draws inspiration from women who've paved the way in Alabama politics, naming Sen. April Weaver, Rep. Margie Wilcox, and Rep. Terri Collins as mentors. She also admires Cynthia Allman and swimmer Riley Gaines.
"As young as she is, she has been so impactful," DuBose said of Gaines. "She’s fabulous, and I hope more young women will be inspired to lead like she has." She finds value in diverse voices, respecting the passion of groups like Moms for Liberty and the Alabama Policy Institute, even when they disagree.
Purpose and Priorities
Her mission? "A sincere desire to help the state of Alabama be the best that it can be." Her focus is on service, not personal ambition.
From Business to Politics: A Winding Path
DuBose started in finance, working in banking for 14 years. She then chose to stay home with her children, a role she says prepared her for politics. "I think being a stay-at-home mom prepared me for what I’m doing as much as anything else," she reflects. Her community involvement led to roles with the American Heart Association and local schools.
The Power of Women's Voices
As former president of the Republican Women of North Shelby County, DuBose believes women's organizations are vital. "Women are very impactful, and probably more impactful than they realize." She encourages women to find and use their voices, urging them to "educate yourself, study the issues, and then let your voice be heard."
Commitment to Her Community
DuBose prioritizes being present in her district. "My goal is to be here in the district… doing everything that’s going on, stopping by the schools. I’m trying to be the best cheerleader I can for my constituents."
A Lasting Impact
From business to motherhood to the legislature, Susan DuBose is dedicated to shaping Alabama policy with compassion and determination. "Do your best, help where you can, and let your voice be heard."
