Alabama's Broadband Boost: Getting Up to Speed!

The Alabama Digital Expansion Authority gathered in Montgomery this week for its quarterly pow-wow, hosted by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA). The focus? Keeping those broadband expansion projects on track!

Federal Funds, Fast Internet

The meeting spotlighted progress updates from 20 internet service providers (ISPs) fueled by grants from two programs funded by the American Rescue Plan Act. These grants, totaling over $400 million, are supercharging Alabama's push to bring high-speed internet to those underserved areas. But there's a catch: everything needs to be wrapped up by the end of 2026!

A Call to Action

ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell delivered a firm, but friendly, message: progress is happening, but not fast enough! He emphasized the importance of meeting federal deadlines for the Capital Projects Fund and the Alabama Anchor Institution/Middle-Mile programs.

Deadlines Matter!

"We’re making progress, but we’re not where we need to be,” Boswell stated. These aren't just suggestions, folks! Missing deadlines could mean Alabama loses funds, and providers risk not getting paid. Ouch!

Avoid the Clawback

Boswell stressed that "substantial completion" is key by December 31, 2026. Miss that mark, and the money could disappear! He urged ISPs to actively manage those projects, hit those milestones, and keep ADECA in the loop. Translation: prioritize, prioritize, prioritize!

Working Together

"We are working together to get this done, but we must streamline efforts and stay ahead of schedule," Boswell added. Speed is the name of the game! Getting these projects done faster means Alabamians get the high-speed internet they've been waiting for – and the state avoids losing critical funding. It's a win-win!

Closing the Digital Divide

The Capital Projects Fund and Alabama Anchor Institution/Middle-Mile programs are vital pieces of Alabama's larger mission: bridging the digital divide and ensuring everyone has reliable, affordable broadband access. Let's get connected, ChumCity!

Shirey Announces Re-Election Bid for House District 100!

State Rep. Mark Shirey (R-Mobile) is officially throwing his hat back in the ring! He's announced his campaign for re-election to the Alabama House representing District 100.

Experience Matters in West Mobile

Shirey, who's served nearly a full term, says he'll keep using his 30+ years of healthcare and business know-how to serve the folks of West Mobile.

A Republican Voice

"I'm a lifelong Republican who believes in hard work, limited government, and putting our communities first," Shirey stated.

He added, "Through Southern Vision Care, I've offered quality eye care and created jobs right here in West Mobile for over 20 years. As your representative, I'll bring that same dedication to fight for policies that boost our economy, strengthen our schools, protect our seniors, and champion Alabama values."

From DeKalb to District 100

A DeKalb County native now calling Mobile home, Shirey's a UAB grad with a Doctor of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. He was also president of the Alabama Optometric Association, where he worked hard to make eye care more accessible statewide.

Shirey's Legislative Priorities

In the Legislature, Shirey's been a supporter of school choice, infrastructure improvements, and getting Alabama's economy humming. He's also backed measures to help out our farmers and cut red tape for businesses.

Backed by Farmers

“I’m deeply grateful for the trust and endorsement of the Alabama Farmers Federation (ALFA) in my re-election campaign," Shirey said.

More Than Just a Politician

“I’m not a politician—I’m an eye doctor, husband, father and businessman committed to fighting for District 100 and Alabama families ensuring safe communities, strong schools, a thriving economy, and policies that are free from woke ideology."

Current Committees

He's currently serving on the House Health Committee, the Commerce and Small Business Committee, and the Mobile County Legislation Committee.

Primary Date

Shirey owns and runs Southern Vision Care in West Mobile. The Republican primary is slated for May 19, 2026.

Local Officer Involved in Fatal Chase - Son of "Dog the Bounty Hunter"

Hold onto your hats, ChumCity citizens! A Priceville police officer, Garry Chapman – yep, son of the legendary "Dog the Bounty Hunter" – has been placed on leave following a harrowing weekend chase that turned tragic.

High-Speed Chase Ends in Devastation

The Saturday evening pursuit, starting in Priceville, culminated in a multi-vehicle pileup in Hartselle. A young life, that of a 17-year-old, was tragically lost, and five others were hospitalized. Our hearts go out to everyone affected.

What Sparked the Chase?

It seems Officer Chapman initiated the stop due to moving violations and suspected DUI. The suspect, 40-year-old Archie Brandon Hale, allegedly bolted, leading to the chase. Hale has since been apprehended.

Investigation Underway

Priceville Police Chief Jerry Holmes assures us that placing Chapman on leave is standard procedure during such incidents. An internal investigation is currently in full swing to determine the facts.

Remembering Tristan Hollis

The devastating crash claimed the life of 17-year-old Tristan Hollis. A graveside service will be held Thursday at Hartselle City Cemetery to honor his memory. The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 36 and U.S. 31 in Hartselle.

Questions Arise

The community is understandably concerned, with some questioning whether the pursuit should have been called off once it entered the busier Hartselle area.

Important Reminder

Let's remember that under Alabama law, Hale is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
