Former Alabama Senator Doug Jones stirred up conversation Monday night during a livestream, drawing a comparison between the 1972 shooting of then-Governor George Wallace and the recent tragic assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Jones highlighted Wallace's divisive rhetoric leading up to 1963 and beyond, suggesting it created a climate of violence. He pointed out that Wallace was ultimately shot in 1972, emphasizing that "rhetoric like this has consequences that you can't control." Jones framed his remarks around the horrific 1963 Birmingham church bombing, connecting it to Kirk's recent on-campus killing at Utah Valley University. He delivered a strong rebuke of what he termed "reckless...hateful rhetoric." He argued that this kind of language "didn’t make violence possible, it made violence inevitable.†Jones explicitly tied his warning to Kirk's murder, stating, "Hateful rhetoric leads to violent acts." He invoked names like George Wallace and Bull Connor, suggesting their rhetoric created a dangerous environment. He further argued that the “us versus them†language normalizes violence. Jones ultimately places the blame on Kirk, by saying "Repetition radicalizes… when dangerous, mostly false narratives are repeated over and over, they become a reality for some people".Doug Jones Draws Parallel Between Wallace Shooting and Charlie Kirk Assassination

ChumCity is saddened to report the passing of Ed Packard, a dedicated figure in Alabama elections, at the age of 57. After dedicating nearly 25 years to the Alabama Secretary of State’s office, Packard retired in December 2021, closing a significant chapter in his career. Packard was a true innovator, recognized as the first individual in the nation to earn a Master of Public Administration degree specializing in election administration from Auburn University in 1996. His journey began at Auburn (1992-1996), where he coordinated election programs for the Secretary of State. He then honed his expertise as an education and training specialist for the North Carolina State Board of Elections (1996-1997). Returning to Alabama in 1997, Packard served as Administrator of Elections for the Secretary of State. In 2007, he became Supervisor of Voter Registration, overseeing statewide programs. He later served as State Election Director beginning in 2013. Former Secretary of State Beth Chapman shared: "Ed Packard was a hard-working state employee for two and a half decades... He gave the kind of customer service in that office that is so rare today, returning every call and getting to the bottom of every issue.†Packard's knowledge was unparalleled. As many would say, "If Ed Packard doesn’t know the answer, you’re not asking the right question." Arrangements will be announced soon. ChumCity sends its condolences to his family and friends.A Sad Farewell to Ed Packard: Alabama Election Expert Passes Away at 57

The race to replace Coach Tuberville in the U.S. Senate is already getting spicy! A new poll puts Attorney General Steve Marshall in the lead with 37%, followed by Congressman Barry Moore at 16%. But hold on – a whopping 40% of voters are still undecided! Could be anyone's game as we head towards 2026. President Trump has ordered National Guard troops to Memphis to help tackle the city's crime issues. Soldiers will be assisting local law enforcement. Word is, other cities are also vying for federal assistance. Stay tuned! In a bizarre twist, former Senator Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) has seemingly blamed Charlie Kirk for his own assassination! Jones compared Kirk to George Wallace, suggesting Kirk's rhetoric could incite violence. Wild stuff! Following the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, young Alabama lawmakers are calling for a return to civility. State Representatives James Lomax (R-Huntsville) and Jeremy Gray (D-Opelika) are urging folks to tone down the fiery rhetoric to prevent further violence. Can't we all just get along? The American media is suddenly denouncing "cancel culture," after years of, critics say, enabling it. They're calling it "consequence culture," but many see it as blatant hypocrisy, especially when applied to reactions surrounding Kirk's death. Several teachers across Alabama are facing criticism and investigations for their responses to Charlie Kirk's death. A philosophy chair at UAH caught heat for branding Kirk as racist and transphobic. An Enterprise college professor was fired for alleged indoctrination attempts. And a Montgomery teacher got flak for mocking the assassination. Yikes! A recent survey suggests liberals are more inclined to find it acceptable to be happy about a public figure's death. 16% overall agree, including a significant 24% of "very liberal" respondents. Comparatively, only 4% of conservatives and 7% of moderates feel the same way. Food for thought! Fresh polling data just dropped, and it's giving us a sneak peek at what Alabama's 2026 election cycle might look like. Hold onto your hats, folks, because some familiar faces are making moves! Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall seems to be off to a strong start in the Senate race. According to the recent Alabama Poll (newly revived by Michael Lowry!), Marshall's snagging 37% of the vote in a hypothetical Republican primary. Representative Barry Moore is trailing in second with 16%, while former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson lags behind at 7%. Marshall's name recognition, built over years in statewide office, is a clear advantage. Moore, despite serving in Congress since 2021, still has some ground to cover with voters outside of south Alabama. Hudson, a newcomer to statewide politics, has an even bigger hill to climb. With a whopping 40% of voters still undecided, this race is far from over. Moore's counting on boosting his visibility and snagging that coveted Donald Trump endorsement, something Marshall will also be vying for. An endorsement from the former Prez could be a game-changer, considering his sky-high approval rating (88%) among Alabama Republicans. Moore proudly boasts of being Trump's early supporter, but Marshall's a heavyweight in conservative legal circles, constantly battling Biden's policies. The race for Lieutenant Governor sees Secretary of State Wes Allen ahead of Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate, but a massive 61% are still on the fence. Same story for Attorney General, where Jay Mitchell leads Pamela Casey and Katherine Robertson, but many are still undecided. Robertson is endorsed by Marshall and received a MASSIVE $1 million donation! For Secretary of State, Andrew Sorrell is narrowly ahead of Caroleene Dobson. The Agriculture Commissioner's race might as well be a blank slate, with a staggering 77% undecided! One thing's for sure: Alabama's 2026 races are gonna be wild. Plenty of time for things to shift, alliances to form, and maybe even a few surprises along the way. John and Barry kicked off today's show diving headfirst into Monday Night Football. While they weren't thrilled with the Raiders-Chargers showdown, they were ALL IN on doubleheaders! They think the NFL should make it a weekly thing, pointing to all the nail-biting finishes lately, like Tampa Bay's last-minute victory and Dallas's epic win over the Giants. That kind of drama, they argued, is often missing from college ball, with only a few games like Texas A&M–Notre Dame and Arkansas–Ole Miss offering that same level of excitement in a weekend full of lopsided scores. Next up, they tackled Auburn's big game at Oklahoma, the SEC's headliner this week. They gave Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold props for a solid, turnover-free performance against South Alabama. Then, the conversation turned to Lane Kiffin's... controversial late score in a previous Ole Miss-Tulane game, painting it as fuel for the Green Wave heading to Oxford. The discussion broadened with talk about Commissioner Greg Sankey’s spicy words aimed at the Big Ten, thanks to Joseph Goodman’s reporting. This stirred up chatter about potential SEC scheduling changes. But John and Barry? They're not buying it! They reckon the big shots in college football are more about protecting the "helmet schools" rather than giving the underdogs a real shot.Longshore & McKnight: Gridiron Gab!
