Jackson Hospital Facing Another Financial Cliffhanger!

Just months after dodging bankruptcy, Jackson Hospital & Clinic is once again teetering on the edge. This time, the clock is really ticking, with only weeks left to secure a plan to stay afloat.

The Situation

Hospital bigwigs told the Montgomery City Council that without an infusion of cash, the hospital could close its doors by the end of October! Right now, they've got about $2 million on hand, which won't even cover the next month's bills.

A Temporary Lifeline?

Jackson Healthcare and its parent company, Jackson Investment Group, are stepping up again with a loan of $3-4 million to keep things running through October. They're hoping this buys local and state leaders some time to figure out a long-term solution.

Looking for City Help

Hospital officials are now asking the city for a hefty $20 million loan. This would cover payroll and other operating costs while they continue to restructure.

A Tough Decision for the City Council

City council members are in a tight spot. They have to weigh the importance of keeping a vital healthcare provider open against their responsibility to protect taxpayer money.

Compassion vs. Caution

Councilmember Andrew Szymanski said it's a "delicate balance between compassion and caution," given the hospital's role in providing care for those who can't afford it.

A Year of Turbulence

This latest crisis follows a rocky year for Jackson Hospital, which defaulted on a bunch of bonds and declared bankruptcy earlier this year.

Previous Rescue Efforts

Back in February, Jackson Healthcare and Jackson Investment Group stepped in with a loan to keep the hospital running while it tried to get its finances in order.

Still in Jeopardy

Despite those efforts, rising costs and low revenue have put Jackson Hospital in a tough spot once more, forcing them to seek even more help to stay open.

What's Next?

The Montgomery City Council hasn't made a decision yet. In the coming weeks, they'll be looking closely at the hospital's financial proposals to see if backing the loan is the right move for the city.

An Uncertain Future

Until a decision is made, the future of Jackson Hospital hangs in the balance, and local leaders are under pressure to act fast before time (and money!) runs out.

Alabama Loses a Barbecue Legend: Dobbs Closes After a Century!

Road trips to Panama City just got a little less flavorful! For over 100 years, Dobbs Famous Bar-B-Que in Dothan has been THE spot for countless Alabamians making their way to the beach. Sadly, this legendary eatery served its last plate this past Sunday.

End of an Era

Located at the corner of Ross Clarke Circle and Highway 231, Dobbs was more than just a restaurant; it was a piece of Alabama history. Owner Art Mayo made the announcement, bringing an era to a close.

A Storied Past

Barbecue aficionados claim Dobbs was the second-oldest BBQ joint in the state, just behind Irondale's Golden Rule BBQ. Euell Lee Dobbs Sr. first fired up the pits in Tallassee back in 1910 before moving the operation to Dothan in 1948.

More Than Just BBQ

The news of Dobbs' closure has sparked an outpouring of memories from loyal customers.

Dothan local Alva Lambert fondly remembers Dobbs' unbeatable camp stew and owner Lee Dobbs, always clad in his signature blue coveralls, greeting everyone with a smile. He also recalls Dobbs' legendary "Hooie-Sooie Stick," a quirky, handmade gadget that delighted generations of diners.

Fond Memories

Ron Creel, Sr., of the Alabama Sports Festival Foundation, reminisced about the drive-up curb service Dobbs offered back in the day, along with what he considers the best strawberry shortcake ever.

What's Next?

As of now, there's no word on what will become of the Dobbs property, or if the restaurant might find a new home. One thing is for sure: Dobbs Famous Bar-B-Que will be deeply missed.

Alabama Lawmakers Say "No Pay, No Way!" During Shutdown

As the government shutdown drags on (thanks, gridlock!), three Alabama representatives are putting their money where their mouths are. Senator Katie Britt, along with Representatives Barry Moore and Dale Strong, have all announced they'll be refusing their salaries until the Democrats decide to play ball and get the government back up and running.

Holding the Line

These three aren't just talking; they've formally requested their paychecks be stopped until Congress manages to hash out an agreement and restore government operations. Britt even sent a letter to the Senate Financial Clerk, Ted Ruckner, specifically asking for her pay to be suspended during the funding fiasco.

"Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is," They Say

"Since Democrats have decided to shut down the government… I have requested the Financial Clerk of the Senate to do the same with my pay," stated Senator Britt, throwing down the gauntlet. "I encourage my Democratic colleagues to do the same."

Moore and Strong are echoing that sentiment. They both made their official requests to go without pay public, blasting the Democrats for hurting Americans with the ongoing shutdown.

Symbolic Stand

While members of Congress technically can't legally refuse their pay outright (thanks to some constitutional and statutory loopholes), they can request their checks be withheld. It's a symbolic gesture, sure, but it's a way for these Alabama lawmakers to show solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of federal employees facing delayed paychecks and furloughs.

Local Legend Lands Hall of Fame Honor!

Big news from Anniston! Nathan Hill, a retired executive assistant from Anniston Army Depot (ANAD), just got inducted into the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) Hall of Fame. Talk about a hometown hero!

A Career of Service

Hill's journey started way back in '68 at ANAD, during the thick of the Vietnam War. The Depot was crucial back then, keeping our troops equipped and ready. Turns out, Hill played a vital role in all that!

Making a Difference

Over 32 years, Hill helped modernize ANAD and keep it running strong. He even pointed to the M48A5 Patton tank conversion program as a real point of pride, keeping that work in-house right here in Anniston. Plus, he helped kickstart a partnership with General Dynamics Land Systems that's still going strong!

Protecting Our Depot

Even after retiring, Hill stayed in the fight, working with the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce to keep ANAD off the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) list. He knew how important the Depot is, not just for our military, but for our local economy too!

A Hall of Fame Legacy

Hill’s super honored by the recognition, saying he hopes his legacy lives on at the depot. He credits teamwork and a laser focus on the mission for ANAD’s success. Sounds like Anniston's got another reason to be proud!

Crypto "Loopholes" or Keys to Opportunity in Alabama?

State Rep. Ed Oliver's recent warning about crypto "loopholes" draining Alabama community banks just doesn't hold water. President Trump's GENIUS Act is poised to boost our economy, and its impact on local banks will be minimal.

Big Banks vs. Financial Freedom

Rep. Oliver echoes big bank talking points, who are trying to block Americans from earning stablecoin rewards (like credit card rewards!) because they don't want any competition.

A Dire Mistake

Re-litigating the GENIUS Act would be a huge step backward and a blow to President Trump's pro-crypto vision.

Bridging the Financial Gap in Rural Alabama

Many rural Alabama communities struggle with financial access. Bank branch closures force people to drive long distances. Alabama has a high percentage of unbanked households, yet mobile use is growing. Blockchain-based services offer real solutions: faster payments, cheaper money transfers, and new ways to save and invest.

Forward-Thinking Alabama Banks

Kudos to Alabama banks embracing technology and investing in customer-facing products. They should explore integrating crypto products, as new digital asset offerings can expand their depositor base.

Rewards, Not Loopholes

Engaging in these strategic discussions is more useful than spreading fear. Rewards programs offered by companies are features of the GENIUS Act, not bugs. Big banks call them "loopholes" because they foster competition.

Deposits and Macroeconomics

Research shows no link between stablecoin growth and community bank deposit declines. Deposits fluctuate with interest rates and economic conditions, not crypto.

Regulatory Certainty is Key

Reopening settled law creates uncertainty, scaring away investment. Digital asset infrastructure is capital-intensive, so developers will build overseas if America keeps changing the rules.

Real Benefits for Rural Alabamians

A Crenshaw County cattle farmer getting paid instantly avoids cash-flow problems. A Pickens County business owner accessing tokenized microloans gains credit that banks might not offer. Digital finance can expand opportunity where it's needed most.

American Leadership in Digital Assets

Re-litigating the GENIUS Act also undermines America's push to lead in digital assets. President Trump sees crypto as vital to our technological and economic strength. Adding restrictions would discourage entrepreneurs.

Sen. Katie Britt: Align with the Vision

Alabama's leaders, especially Sen. Katie Britt on the Senate Banking Committee, should align with this vision.

Comprehensive Legislation Needed

The right path is to enforce clear rules, competition, and consumer protection by passing market structure legislation.

A Win-Win-Win

This is a win for innovation, financial freedom, and rural Alabama under President Trump's crypto agenda.

Will Middleton is the managing member of Blockchain Tek in Florence, Alabama.

Marques Gains Momentum in CD1 Race!

Rhett Marques' campaign for Alabama's 1st Congressional District just got a serious boost! State Sen. Donnie Chesteen (R-Geneva) is officially backing Marques, adding his name to a growing list of heavy-hitters.

A Stamp of Approval from Chesteen

"Rhett Marques is the real deal," Chesteen declared. "He's a conservative Republican who knows how to get things done. I'm excited to have him fighting for us in D.C.!" Chesteen, representing parts of Dale, Geneva, and Houston counties (all within the 1st Congressional District), emphasized Marques' integrity and effectiveness.

Marques Expresses Gratitude

"It's an honor to have Senator Chesteen's support," Marques responded. "Serving alongside him has been a privilege."

The Race is On!

Marques is vying for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, who's aiming for the U.S. Senate. Fun fact: Marques also stepped into Moore's shoes in the Alabama Legislature back in the day. He's been serving for 7 years.

The Competition

He's up against Jerry Carl, who's looking to reclaim his old Congressional job. Remember, Moore edged out Carl in 2024.

Mark Your Calendars!

The Republican primary is set for May 19, 2026. Get ready to rumble!
