Big news out of Jacksonville State University! Dr. Kenneth G. Bodiford, the iconic Director of Bands who transformed the Marching Southerners into a global sensation, is retiring at the end of the current season, effective January 1, 2026. Get ready for a season of celebration!

From 120 to 500+ Members!

When Bodiford took the reins in 1994, he inherited a program of roughly 120 members. Over three incredible decades, he's fostered remarkable growth, innovation, and provided unforgettable experiences for countless Gamecocks. Today, the Marching Southerners boast over 500 members, making them one of the largest collegiate marching bands in the country!

A Family Bond

"This has been the honor of my life," Dr. Bodiford shared with students and alumni. "We’ve shared some incredible shows, but the real magic has always been the family bond we build year after year… Creating a place where every single person feels like they belong—that is what makes the Southerners truly special.”

From Odenville to Global Stages

A Jax State alum himself (class of '88!), Bodiford's journey began in Odenville, Alabama. After teaching in Virginia and earning advanced degrees, he returned to his alma mater to create something truly special.

World-Class Performances

Under Bodiford’s guidance, the Marching Southerners have performed on some of the world's most prestigious stages: London's New Year’s Day Parade, the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, Rome & the Vatican, and Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The "Heisman" of Marching Bands

In 2022, the Southerners achieved the ultimate honor, receiving the Sudler Trophy – the "Heisman" of college marching bands! Jax State is the smallest university ever to receive this prestigious award.

Rose Parade Bound!

The program's star continues to rise! The Marching Southerners have been invited to perform in the 138th Rose Parade® in 2027, bringing their signature sound and precision to millions of viewers.

Calling All Young Hunters! Deer and Duck Hunts Coming to Hale County!

Get ready for some awesome outdoor action! The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) is stoked to announce the youth deer and duck hunt schedules for the M. Barnett Lawley Forever Wild Field Trial Area (FWFTA) in Hale County. Mark your calendars for late November 2025 through February 2026!

"We're thrilled to share the thrill of deer and duck hunting on this Forever Wild gem with a new generation," says ADCNR Commissioner Chris Blankenship. "These hunts are all about family bonding and teaching young hunters to be responsible stewards of our amazing natural resources."

How to Sign Up

Registration opens October 1 and runs until October 13, 2025. Don't miss out! After registration closes, a random, computerized drawing will pick the lucky hunters on October 14. If you're selected, you've got to accept your hunt invitation by October 17.

Youth Deer Hunt Dates:

Important Details

Registration for these FWFTA youth hunts is for parents or adults (21+) with a Conservation ID number. A hunting license isn't needed at registration, but it is required to accept the hunt permit if you're selected. If chosen, you'll get an email to validate/accept your permit. Once accepted, an email with all the hunt deets will follow!

Youth hunters must be 15 or younger and must be with an adult (21+ or a parent). Adults need a valid state hunting license and duck stamp (if duck hunting, of course!). Grab your licenses before the hunt – they won't be available on-site.

Game Check is a Must!

All deer harvested must be reported through Alabama's Game Check system within 48 hours via the Outdoor AL mobile app or online.

Conservation ID: Your Key to the Outdoors

A Conservation ID number makes reporting harvests super easy. Plus, you can use it to buy licenses, snag HIP permits, register for Special Opportunity Area hunts, and more!

The FWFTA boasts 4,300 acres and is a hub for nature and recreation. Beyond youth hunts, it's got sporting dog training grounds and programs for hunters with physical disabilities. Carnage in the Capital: Downtown Montgomery Erupts in Gunfire

A night of revelry in downtown Montgomery turned tragic Saturday night when a mass shooting left two dead and a dozen wounded. The shocking incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. near Bibb & Commerce, a stone's throw from popular tourist spots and the heart of the city's nightlife.

Details of the Devastating Event

Police described the scene as a "mass shooting event," reporting that multiple individuals opened fire after an initial target was identified. The deceased have been identified as 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalanda Williams. As of Sunday, five of the twelve wounded were in critical condition. The youngest victim is only 16. Law enforcement confirmed that at least two of the victims were armed. As of now, no arrests have been made.

Swift Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys stated that at least five officers were nearby when the gunfire erupted and immediately responded to the chaos.

City Seeks Public's Help

The city is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to arrests. Authorities are urging anyone with video footage to share it with investigators. A dedicated email, StarCenter@MontgomeryAL.gov, has been established for tips. Investigators are working alongside state and federal partners, including ALEA, the U.S. Marshals, FBI, and ATF, to analyze surveillance footage.

Weekend Festivities Overshadowed by Violence

The shooting occurred during a weekend heavily promoted by Mayor Steven Reed's administration to attract visitors, including events surrounding the HBCU Classic, the Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic, Alabama State University homecoming, and the Alabama National Fair. The city had invested heavily in attractions like a Ferris wheel and "Thrills Zone," aiming to boost the downtown area.

Crime Concerns Persist

Despite Mayor Reed's claims of mid-year crime declines, Saturday's bloodshed underscores the city's ongoing struggle with violent crime. While homicide numbers may be slightly down compared to last year, the overall situation remains a serious concern.

State officials are increasingly vocal about Montgomery's perceived reluctance to aggressively address crime. U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt, Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth, and Attorney General Steve Marshall are among those urging swift and decisive action.

MACS: A Step Backwards?

Marshall is already part of the Montgomery Area Crime Suppression (MACS) Unit, a collaboration between state, federal, and local officials formed in 2024. While early reports suggested the unit was making progress in curbing violent crime, this latest incident feels like a significant setback.

Attorney General Speaks Out

Calling the situation a "crisis," Marshall expressed his sympathies and concerns, stating, "Though the blame lies with those who carelessly pulled the triggers, I continue to be troubled by the city leadership’s stubborn refusal to acknowledge that they have a serious problem... I remain committed to...revisiting the conversation about the state’s authority over its capital."

What is MACS?

The Montgomery Area Crime Suppression Unit is a multi-agency task force led by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), with support from the Attorney General's Office, Montgomery Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, and the ATF.

Early Successes, Limited Impact?

Since its inception, MACS has reported successes, including seizing illegal weapons and stolen vehicles, as well as a decrease in serious crime-related emergency calls. These successes prompted discussions about expanding the MACS model to other Alabama cities. Governor Ivey even requested funding for a permanent task force that could be deployed statewide.

The Question Remains: State Authority?

What options are available to the State of Alabama to expand its authority over Montgomery and address its escalating crime problem? This is the conversation Attorney General Marshall intends to reignite.

"If we have a problem, we're going to correct that problem," Tuberville affirmed. "And if it takes more people — which the next step would be the National Guard — absolutely, we would do the correct thing for the taxpayers of the city that needs help."
