Fishy Situation in Muscle Shoals

Looks like there's some serious drama brewing in Muscle Shoals' Beacon Point neighborhood! According to reports, residents addressed the City Council on July 14th, sharing concerns about a not-so-pleasant backyard invasion.

"Lake Lockhart?"

We're talking thousands of dead fish and stagnant water transforming backyards into what some are calling a "lake" – yikes! Neighborhood rep Billy Underwood didn't mince words, placing the blame squarely on the city and even dubbing the area "Lake Lockhart" (named after Mayor Mike Lockhart!).

Swampy Conditions

Underwood painted a vivid picture of swamp-like conditions, highlighting potential health hazards like mosquitoes, rodents, and other critters attracted to the standing water. He described the smell as so strong he thought a person had died. Not good!

City's Response

Apparently, the city has been pumping excess water into the area since 2019 to alleviate flooding elsewhere. Mayor Lockhart explained that the area serves as a temporary diversion point for water from neighborhood ponds. He also stated he was unaware of the dead fish issue prior to the meeting, but assured residents that flooding concerns are taken seriously and encouraged them to reach out with any issues.

Alabama Libraries: No "Woke Indoctrination" Zone!

Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) Board Chairman John Wahl is drawing a line in the sand: Alabama libraries won't be used to push any "woke" agendas.

Wahl's Message to Libraries

Wahl, who also heads the Alabama Republican Party, has sent a formal letter to library directors statewide. He's making it clear that the APLS Board fully supports President Trump's executive order. This order aims to prevent federal funds from being used to promote what they term "gender ideology."

What's the Fuss About?

According to Wahl, libraries should be places of learning, not platforms for social engineering. He believes taxpayer dollars shouldn't be used to promote controversial ideologies, especially when kids are involved.

Compliance is Key

The letter essentially tells libraries that to keep getting federal grants managed by APLS, they gotta follow the executive order. This means reviewing collections, events, and policies to make sure no federal money is used to advance "gender ideology" in any way, shape, or form.

No Funny Business!

Failure to comply could mean losing grant eligibility, which could really hurt library funding. Wahl is urging everyone to take a good, hard look at their operations to stay in line with the new guidelines.

Not Censorship, Just Common Sense?

Wahl insists this isn't about censorship. He sees it as protecting parental rights, upholding "biological truth," and safeguarding the innocence of childhood. He wants libraries to be safe and welcoming places for families, free from divisive political agendas in the kids' section.

Standing with Alabama Families

The APLS chairman says the organization is standing tall with Alabama families to protect kids from sexually explicit and inappropriate content.

Nail-Biter in Cullman!

The race to fill the vacant Alabama House District 12 seat in Cullman County is turning into a real cliffhanger! Republican Cindy Myrex almost clinched the win outright on Tuesday, but ended up just shy of the 50% mark needed to avoid a run-off.

The Numbers Game

With a grand total of 4,235 votes cast, Myrex, a local real estate agent, snagged 49.81%. Businessman Clint Hollingsworth followed with a respectable 43.24%. Heather Doyle and Dan McWhorter were also in the running, but didn't quite break the 150-vote barrier.

Provisional Ballots: The Wild Card

Official sources are saying a run-off is likely, but don't count Myrex out just yet! Around 20 provisional ballots are still waiting to be counted next Tuesday, and if nearly all of those fall in her favor, she could still snatch the victory. Hollingsworth even noted some voter confusion at the polls, encouraging the completion of those crucial provisional ballots.

The Alabama Republican Party is keeping a close eye on things. Jeannie Burniston, ALGOP's Director of Legislative Affairs & Communications, praised all the candidates and reaffirmed the party's commitment to keeping this "solidly Republican seat" in conservative hands.
