Fishy Situation in Muscle Shoals

Looks like there's some serious drama brewing in Muscle Shoals' Beacon Point neighborhood! According to reports, residents addressed the City Council on July 14th, sharing concerns about a not-so-pleasant backyard invasion.

"Lake Lockhart?"

We're talking thousands of dead fish and stagnant water transforming backyards into what some are calling a "lake" – yikes! Neighborhood rep Billy Underwood didn't mince words, placing the blame squarely on the city and even dubbing the area "Lake Lockhart" (named after Mayor Mike Lockhart!).

Swampy Conditions

Underwood painted a vivid picture of swamp-like conditions, highlighting potential health hazards like mosquitoes, rodents, and other critters attracted to the standing water. He described the smell as so strong he thought a person had died. Not good!

City's Response

Apparently, the city has been pumping excess water into the area since 2019 to alleviate flooding elsewhere. Mayor Lockhart explained that the area serves as a temporary diversion point for water from neighborhood ponds. He also stated he was unaware of the dead fish issue prior to the meeting, but assured residents that flooding concerns are taken seriously and encouraged them to reach out with any issues.
