From Pratt City to President: Joe Hampton's Inspiring Journey

Growing up in Pratt City, just northwest of Birmingham, Joe Hampton learned some powerful lessons early on. He watched his parents, a coal miner and a beauty salon worker, generously give to their neighbors, even when times were tough.

"I come from humble beginnings," says Hampton, now President of Spire Alabama, Gulf Coast and Mississippi. "But my parents always supported others in need."

Those early experiences shaped Hampton's leadership style. He hasn't forgotten where he comes from, and it drives his commitment to serving Alabama.

Leading with Connection

"It's an honor to lead an organization in my home state," Hampton shares. He sees himself as a role model, proving what young Alabamians can achieve. His leadership is all about connection, from mentoring rising talent to ensuring families have reliable energy.

"My goal is to show up with enthusiasm and serve," he explains. This includes guiding those eager to learn about the energy industry, caring for Spire's customers, and supporting the team delivering top-notch service daily.

A Career Built on Relationships

Hampton's journey with Spire (formerly Alabama Gas Corporation) began in 1992 as an intern. He steadily climbed the ranks, learning valuable lessons from everyone he met.

"From the janitor to the CEO, every interaction left an impression," he recalls. Even assisting an elderly woman with her bill taught him something important.

Investing in Alabama's Future

Hampton credits his mentors for believing in him and encouraging his voice. Now, he's paying it forward by prioritizing workforce development in Spire's Southeast region.

Spire recently launched the "Get into Energy" program in partnership with Lawson State Community College. This hands-on training equips students with the skills needed for entry-level jobs in the natural gas industry.

The first class graduated in January 2025, with many students receiving job offers on the spot and valuable certifications.

"Everyone deserves an opportunity to succeed," Hampton believes. "Those with resources should step up and offer support. A skilled workforce is crucial for Spire and Alabama."

A Neighbor, Not Just a Utility

For Hampton, community investment isn't just a business strategy; it's personal.

He remembers his mother's generosity: "She'd pick up strangers, learn about their families, and later bring them a warm meal. Her kindness inspires my passion for supporting our communities."

This spirit is evident in how Spire supports students, nonprofits, and underserved areas across Alabama and Mississippi. From school supplies to energy assistance, every act matters.

"Community investment is using resources to create positive impact," Hampton explains. "It's at the heart of who we are."

In 2024, Spire invested $6.5 million in its communities. The company's external affairs team keeps them connected, working with organizations, local leaders, and the Alabama delegation in D.C.

"Our goal is to educate residents on programs for bill payments, rebates, and financing," Hampton shares. "We also create opportunities for our employees to volunteer and share this information."

Looking Ahead: A Legacy of Caring

After 30+ years, Hampton is motivated by the difference Spire's people make daily.

"It's exciting to work for a company providing reliable, affordable energy and improving the communities where we live and work," he says.

Spire has been part of Alabama for over 160 years. Hampton believes the company's future will be shaped by its leaders, relationships, and the lives it impacts.

"I want my team to understand that caring for others is the best part of becoming the leader everyone deserves," he concludes.

Get Ready to "Score Big with Safety" This Labor Day!

Hey ChumCity! Labor Day weekend is almost here, and that means college football's back! But before you hit the road or the water, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) wants to remind everyone to "Score Big with Safety."

ALEA's Highway Patrol and Marine Patrol are beefing up their presence across the state. Expect checkpoints, LIDAR, and waterway patrols to keep things safe and sound this holiday.

Heads Up from ALEA Boss Hal Taylor

"Labor Day is a huge travel weekend, and with football kicking off, the excitement is through the roof!" says ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. "We want everyone to start the season with a win by making smart choices. Buckle up, drive sober, and stay alert so you can enjoy the holiday responsibly!"

Road Rules Roundup

  • Party Smart: Have a plan for a safe ride before you start celebrating.
  • Buckle Up, Buttercup: Seat belts save lives, even on short trips.
  • Phone Down! Texting and driving? That's like driving blindfolded!
  • Tailgating is for the Lot: Leave the close following to the stadium.

Water Ways to Stay Safe

  • Know the Flow: Obey all regulations and No-Wake zones.
  • Life Jacket's Your Best Bet: Protect yourself from unexpected dangers.
  • Boating + Booze = Big No-No: Keep alcohol off the water.
  • Eyes Peeled! Watch out for swimmers, paddleboarders, and sudden storms.

Coastal Watch: ALEA's Rescue Swimmer Detail

ALEA's even deploying a helicopter with rescue swimmers to monitor the Gulf Coast! Partnering with Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Fire Departments, they'll be on the lookout for swimmers in distress and covering areas beyond lifeguard patrols.

Colonel Archer's Safety Plea

"Our goal is to keep everyone safe, whether you're heading to a tailgate, cruising on a boat, or chilling on the beach," says Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA's Department of Public Safety. "Make smart choices and follow the rules, so the holiday ends with awesome memories, not tragedy."

Stay safe out there, ChumCity, and have an awesome Labor Day weekend!

Alabama's $98 Million Booze Boondoggle?

The Alabama ABC Board is gearing up for a swanky new $98 million warehouse in Montgomery. They're hoping to move into the 250,000-square-foot space off Congressman Dickinson Drive next year.

The Price Tag: Twenty Years of Expenses

The ABC plans to foot the bill for this massive facility over the next 20 years using operating expenses. ABC Chief Operating Officer Neil Graff says it'll eventually be a big win for the General Fund.

A Better Buzz: Scrap the System!

Here's a thought: ditch the ABC Board altogether. Sell the new building and embrace a free market. That $98 million would pack a bigger punch in the private sector.

Socialist Spirits in a Conservative State?

Alabama's clinging to a government monopoly on alcohol sales, something only 17 states still do. It's baffling that a supposedly conservative state is running a socialist system for liquor.

The Illusion of Profit

Thinking the government's making bank on these liquor stores? Think again. They generate revenue, sure, but they also stifle growth for private retailers. Even just privatizing the retail stores could save the state $25-$45 million!

Senator Says: Cut the Costs!

State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) nailed it when he first championed getting Alabama out of the liquor business. Cutting labor, leases, insurance, and transportation – that's where the real savings are.

Time for a Change

It's time Alabama ditched its socialist liquor enterprise and joined the majority of states in the union.

Back to School = Scam Season? Let's Stay Smart!

The bell's ringing! Whether you're heading to kindergarten or conquering college, back-to-school season is officially HERE. But while you're juggling schedules and syllabi, remember that scammers are also gearing up, ready to target unsuspecting students and parents.

Parents, We Got You!

We know you're dealing with a LOT right now. Drop-offs, lunch accounts, tuition… it's a whirlwind. That's why we're sharing some vital tips to protect your wallet and sanity!

Guard Against Fake Websites & Sellers

New year, new gear? Be extra cautious when shopping online for supplies, books, or tech. Scammers love setting up fake websites with tempting prices, but you might end up paying for something you never receive. Stick to trusted sources!

Social Media Savvy

Social media's great for connecting, but not everyone's your friend. Watch out for suspicious back-to-school offers or groups. Don't share personal info!

Bank Account Vigilance

Monitor your bank and credit card statements like a hawk! Set up alerts on your banking app for real-time notifications of expenses. Report anything fishy ASAP to the FTC or your local consumer protection office.

Students, Protect Yo'self!

College life is exciting, but it also makes you a target. Scammers are drooling over the chance to offer fake financial aid or bogus housing deals.

Financial Aid Red Flags

Beware of scholarships, grants, or loans that require upfront fees or personal info. Verify everything through your school's official financial aid office or trusted scholarship websites FIRST.

Digital Fortress

Your online accounts are GOLD to scammers. Use strong, unique passwords (and don't reuse them!), enable two-factor authentication. Watch out for phishing emails pretending to be from your school or bank. When in doubt, go directly to the official website, not the link in the email.

Account Awareness

Keep a close eye on your bank account! Set up transaction alerts. Report anything suspicious to your school's fraud office, your bank, or the FTC immediately.

The Golden Rule: Stop. Call. Confirm.

Before reacting to unexpected requests for money or personal information (especially via email, text, or phone), PAUSE. Call the organization directly using a KNOWN and TRUSTED number to verify the request. Trust your gut! If something feels off, double-check before you fall victim.

Stay safe, ChumCity! Let's make this a scam-free school year!

Thursday Night Recap: Chaos, Touchdowns, and Taylor Swift!

John and Barry are still buzzing from Thursday night’s wild ride! Boise State's epic fail against South Florida? Check! UAB's insane shootout victory over Alabama State? Double check!

UAB's Strange Home-Field Advantage

Protective Stadium had a seriously weird vibe. Alabama State fans dominated the stands, even though UAB pulled off a 52-42 win! What's up with that?

Nebraska-Cincinnati: Football and... Swifties?

Nebraska barely squeaked by Cincinnati at Arrowhead, but the real story was the "Baby Mahomes" hype around Dylan Raiola and the Kelce-Swift sighting. Honestly, all the off-field drama is getting a little old.

Schwarber's Homerun Derby

Kyle Schwarber went absolutely bonkers, smashing FOUR home runs against the Braves! Philly dropped a ridiculous 19 runs, leaving Atlanta fans feeling like they were watching a football game... and not in a good way.

Corso's Farewell and Manning Wisdom

The guys also tackled Lee Corso’s last College GameDay. Everyone appreciates his legacy, but are we really still doing farewell tours? Then, the conversation shifted to Jerry Jones potentially trading Micah Parsons to Green Bay (say what?!), and finally, some Archie Manning wisdom for young Arch: "Get down or get out of bounds!" Classic Manning.

Special Guest: Greg Reed

The show wrapped up with a special interview with Alabama Secretary of Workforce Greg Reed. He talked about the positive changes happening in Alabama now that the Department of Labor has transformed into the Alabama Department of Workforce.
