According to Reed, the mission is clear: "We want Alabama's workers to be the best trained in America!" The goal? To increase the number of skilled workers ready to power the state's economic engine.

Apprenticeships are Key

One of the main strategies? Expanding access to apprenticeship programs! These programs allow Alabamians to "learn and earn," gaining valuable skills without having to put their lives on hold. Right now, the state's Office of Apprenticeship has connections with over 500 Alabama companies, helping folks get paid while they learn. Youth apprenticeships are also a growing focus.

Tackling Workforce Obstacles

But it's not just about skills; it's about removing roadblocks! Reed highlighted key barriers preventing people from joining the workforce: health care, housing, childcare, and transportation. The department is actively exploring solutions, including potential partnerships with the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Recognizing the impact of childcare on workforce participation, especially for women, the department is looking into incentives to make childcare more accessible. Providing childcare options is seen as crucial to helping skilled workers return to the workforce.

After a tense recount, officials announced the incredibly rare tie on Friday. Mayor Leigh Dollar initially held a razor-thin one-vote lead (1,062-1,061) over Jeff McLaughlin, but the count of provisional ballots changed everything.

Candidates React

McLaughlin, urging unity, said, "Let's pull everybody back together. Let's work together in the city... I don't want this to lead to any kind of division."

Dollar echoed the importance of civic engagement: "I never expected it to be that close by one vote... Every vote counts. It's so important to go exercise your right to vote, because so many times people say, 'My vote doesn't matter.' Yes, it does!"

Culverhouse Cash Sparks Controversy

Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell kicked things off by blasting opponent Katherine Robertson for accepting a hefty $150,000 campaign donation from Hugh F. Culverhouse, Jr. Mitchell didn't mince words, calling Culverhouse out for funding an abortion clinic and attempting to strong-arm Alabama's pro-life stance.

"Trying to buy influence in the AG's office? Major red flag!" Mitchell warned.

Robertson Fires Back

Not one to back down, Robertson, the current Attorney General's chief counsel and endorsed candidate, swiftly retaliated. She accused Mitchell of hypocrisy, pointing fingers at his donor relationships. The tension quickly escalated into a full-blown social media showdown.

The race is shaping up to be a big-money battle. Mitchell has criticized "out-of-state dark money," while Robertson recently disclosed a $1 million contribution from a Nashville-based nonprofit, First Principles Action.

Mitchell's attack on the Culverhouse donation stems from a 2019 controversy when the University of Alabama returned his $26.5 million pledge after he slammed the state's abortion laws and demanded influence over university operations. He later invested in a Birmingham abortion clinic.

Robertson's Response: "Hypocrisy!"

Robertson's campaign hit back hard, accusing Mitchell of misleading voters and accepting contributions from "woke anti-Trump Chicago trial lawyers." They also highlighted Culverhouse as a Trump mega-donor, having given $500,000 to Trump's campaign in June 2024.

Further, they criticized Mitchell's role in LePage v. Center for Reproductive Medicine, which temporarily paused IVF services in Alabama.

The conflict went nuclear on X. Robertson questioned Mitchell's "interesting take" on donors, while Mitchell's campaign resurfaced news reports of Culverhouse's Planned Parenthood donation.

"We know from experience that this guy does not give without strings attached," Mitchell fired back. "He’s tried before, and he’s trying again to buy the culture of our state and make it as woke as he is."
