Heads up, ChumCity travelers! Spirit Airlines is pulling out of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport starting October 3rd. That means the end of those budget-friendly flights to Fort Lauderdale, Newark, and Detroit. Spirit’s cutting service here (and at ten other airports nationwide) as part of a company restructuring. Remember when Spirit arrived in Birmingham back in October 2024, offering nonstop flights to sunny Fort Lauderdale? Routes to Newark and Detroit were added later, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. Spirit says this was a "difficult" choice but necessary to "transform our business." Translation: They're working hard to stay airborne for the long haul. Got a flight booked after October 3rd? Spirit will be in touch about refunds. Don't fret! Airport officials remind us that Delta Airlines is still offering plenty of flights. You can still fly nonstop to New York City (LaGuardia) and Detroit three times a day.Spirit Airlines Says "So Long, Birmingham!"
